Study protocol of an international patient-led registry in patients with pulmonary fibrosis using online home monitoring: I-FILE.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is caused by a heterogeneous group of diseases, with a high inter-individual variability in disease trajectory. Identifying disease progression in patients with PF has impact on clinical management decisions. However, strategies to early identify and predict disease progression for these patients are currently lacking. In this study, we aim to assess long-term FVC change in patients with PF measured with home spirometry, and evaluate the feasibility of a multinational patient-led registry in PF. In addition, we will assess validity of patient-reported outcom

Pre-neuromusculoskeletal injury Risk factor Evaluation and Post-neuromusculoskeletal injury Assessment for Return-to-duty/activity Enhancement (PREPARE) in military service members: a prospective, observational study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Non-battle related musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are one of the primary medical issues diminishing Service member medical readiness. The MSKI problem is challenging because it is difficult to assess all of the factors that increase MSKI risk and influence post-MSKI outcomes. Currently, there are no high-throughput, clinically-feasible, and comprehensive assessments to generate patient-centric data for informing pre- and post-MSKI risk assessment and mitigation strategies. The objective of the "Pre-neuromusculoskeletal injury Risk factor Evaluation and Post-neuromusculoskeletal in

Effect of hypercholesterolemia alone or combined with hypertension on the degree of coronary artery stenosis in patients with coronary heart disease angina pectoris: A medical records based retrospective study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death globally. Angina pectoris is closely associated with coronary artery insufficiency, which seriously affects the quality of life and work of patients. Hypercholesterolemia and hypertension (HTN) are risk factors for CHD angina pectoris. The correlation between hypercholesterolemia with or without HTN and the severity of coronary arteries has not been clarified. OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between hypercholesterolemia and the degree of coronary artery stenosis (CAS) of CHD angina pectoris, and to further research t

Sigmoid volvulus: Evaluating identification strategies and contemporary multicenter outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is limited epidemiologic data on sigmoid volvulus (SV) from non-endemic regions. Therefore, we performed a multicenter study to report contemporary outcomes and appraise literature-based methods that pair diagnostic and procedural codes to identify SV. METHOD: Using an automated search for patients with 'volvulus' in our system from 2011 to 2021, we reviewed electronic charts to clarify the diagnosis, automatically replicate three strategies to identify SV, and retrieved 6-month outcomes. RESULTS: Of 895 patients, 109 had SV. Literature-based strategies poorly identified SV

A seat at the table: an invitation to the SRS podium via the study group.

PURPOSE: The SRS annual meeting (SRS-AM) represents the pinnacle of research in the field of spinal deformity. Spine surgery research was historically based on single-surgeon experience, but an increasing number of abstracts presented at SRS-AM are conducted by multicenter study groups, which may have improved the quality of literature available to surgeons. We sought to determine the proportion of SRS-AM podium presentations (PP) resulting from study groups over a 15-year period. METHODS: 1874 PP from the 2005-2019 SRS-AM were reviewed to determine if they resulted from a study group or mult

Cognitive assessment strategies in Huntington's disease research.

The number of studies examining cognition in Huntington's disease (HD) has increased dramatically in recent decades, and cognitive research methods in HD have become much more sophisticated. In this review, we provide a summary of the advances in cognitive research in HD to date, and outline the key considerations for researchers planning to include cognitive assessment in their studies of HD. In particular, we discuss consideration of structure-function relationships, selection of tests appropriate to the population, choice of materials and issues of intellectual property, consideration of va

Challenges and opportunities for HSCT outcome registries: perspective from international HSCT registries experts.

Patient registries, frequently referred to as outcome registries, are 'organized systems' that use observational study methods to collect uniform data. Registries are used to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition or exposure that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical or policy purposes. Outcome registries were established very early in the development of hematopoietic SCT (HSCT). Currently, myriads of national and international HSCT registries collect information about HSCT activities and outcomes. These registries have contribu

Biliary atresia: unity in diversity.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare disease of unknown origin and unsatisfying outcome. Single, multicenter and national evaluations of epidemiological and outcome data on BA have been periodically published over the course of decades. However, the diversity of the registered parameters and outcome measures impede comparability and cumulative analysis of these very worthwhile studies. Taking into account the fact that BA is a good example of translational research and transition of patients from pediatric surgery and hepatology to transplant surgery and hepatology in general, the interdisciplinary

nSeP: immune and metabolic biomarkers for early detection of neonatal sepsis-protocol for a prospective multicohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing neonatal sepsis is heavily dependent on clinical phenotyping as culture-positive body fluid has poor sensitivity, and existing blood biomarkers have poor specificity.A combination of machine learning, statistical and deep pathway biology analyses led to the identification of a tripartite panel of biologically connected immune and metabolic markers that showed greater than 99% accuracy for detecting bacterial infection with 100% sensitivity. The cohort study described here is designed as a large-scale clinical validation of this previous work. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Thi

The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort study (SPHYNCS): Study protocol for a prospective, multicentre cohort observational study.

Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a disorder with well-established markers and a suspected autoimmune aetiology. Conversely, the narcoleptic borderland (NBL) disorders, including narcolepsy type 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, insufficient sleep syndrome and hypersomnia associated with a psychiatric disorder, lack well-defined markers and remain controversial in terms of aetiology, diagnosis and management. The Swiss Primary Hypersomnolence and Narcolepsy Cohort Study (SPHYNCS) is a comprehensive multicentre cohort study, which will investigate the clinical picture, pathophysiology and long-term course of

[Administration of levothyroxine in the treatment of Basedow disease].

Current therapy of Graves' disease is symptomatically effective in eliminating hyperthyroidism but is not directed towards the immunological cause of the disease. As a result, the majority of patients experience relapse of hyperthyroidism after antithyroid drugs have been discontinued and need to undergo radioiodine treatment or surgery. Improvement of efficacy of antithyroid drug therapy in inducing longlasting remission of Graves' disease has therefore been an elusive goal. A number of recent experimental and clinical trials have addressed the issue of improving and optimizing modalities of
