Dynamic networks have become a pivotal area of study in deep learning due to their ability to selectively activate computing units (such as layers or channels) or dynamically allocate computation to information-rich regions. This capability significantly curtails unnecessary computations, adapting to varying inputs. Despite these advantages, the practical efficiency of dynamic models often falls short of theoretical computation. This discrepancy arises from three primary challenges: 1) a lack of a unified framework across different dynamic inference paradigms due to the fragmented research lan

Deep learning (DL) models developed for established medical imaging modalities have shown increasing performance and reliability as a result of scaling efforts. In contrast, model development for emerging modalities such as photoacoustic imaging (PAI) remains challenged by data sparsity, which limits model generalizability and raises the susceptibility to bias. While recent studies in PAI have started to investigate subject-related confounders, the impact of hardware-related confounders remains unexplored, posing a critical risk for failure in multicentric deployment scenarios. We are the firs

The Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 8 (TRPM8) ion channel is an emerging therapeutic target implicated in pain, inflammation and other disorders. While structure-based virtual screening (VS) is widely used in drug discovery, the effectiveness of generic and target-specific machine-learning (ML) scoring functions (SFs) for ion channels such as TRPM8 remains to be investigated. We established the first comprehensive structure-based VS benchmark for TRPM8. This evaluates classical docking SFs, generic ML SFs and target-specific ML models retrospectively across multiple TRPM8 protein confo

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing drug discovery with unprecedented speed and efficiency. In computer-aided drug design, structure-based and ligand-based methodologies are the main driving forces for innovation. In cases where no experimental structure or high-confidence homology/AlphaFold-predicted model of the target is available in 3D, ligand-based strategies are generally preferable. Here, we aim to develop and evaluate new predictive AI models for ligand-based drug discovery. To illustrate our workflow, we propose, as an example, an ensemble classification model for Cdr1 inh

Large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) is a heterogeneous lymphoid malignancy in which MYC gene rearrangement (MYC-R) is associated with a poor prognosis, prompting the recommendation for more intensive treatment. MYC-R detection relies on fluorescence in situ hybridization method which is time consuming, expensive, and not available in all laboratories. Automating MYC-R detection on hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained whole slide images of LBCL would decrease the need for costly molecular testing and improve pathologists' productivity. We developed an interpretable deep learning algorithm to detect MYC-R con

Modern visual recognition models often display overconfidence due to their reliance on complex deep neural networks and one-hot target supervision, resulting in unreliable confidence scores that necessitate calibration. While current confidence calibration techniques primarily address single-label scenarios, there is a lack of focus on more practical and generalizable multi-label contexts. This paper introduces the Multi-Label Confidence Calibration (MLCC) task, aiming to provide well-calibrated confidence scores in multi-label scenarios. Unlike single-label images, multi-label images contain

This paper describes a computer-aided detection and diagnosis system for breast cancer, the most common form of cancer among women, using mammography. The system relies on the Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) paradigm, which has proven useful for medical decision support in previous works from our team. In the proposed framework, breasts are first partitioned adaptively into regions. Then, features derived from the detection of lesions (masses and microcalcifications) as well as textural features, are extracted from each region and combined in order to classify mammography examinations as "nor

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] findings in Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder [NMOSD] and Multiple Sclerosis [MS] patients could lead us to discriminate toward them. For instance, U-fiber and Dawson's finger-type lesions are suggestive of MS, however linear ependymal lesions raise the possibility of NMOSD. Recently, artificial intelligence [AI] models have been used to discriminate between NMOSD and MS based on MRI features. In this study, we aim to systematically review the capability of AI algorithms in NMOSD and MS discrimination based on MRI features.

Wheat emergence rate and emergence uniformity are key indicators for evaluating seed vigor and sowing quality, and they play an important role in wheat growth and yield formation. Traditional methods for measuring emergence rate and evaluating emergence uniformity rely on manual assessment, which is inefficient, highly subjective, and unable to meet the demand for large scale, high efficiency, and precise acquisition of wheat emergence data. In this study, RGB images and a two-stage deep learning algorithm were used to extract and analyze seedling traits of 420 wheat varieties under two nitrog

Accurate assessment of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) status in colorectal cancer (CRC) is pivotal for precision therapy, yet the gigapixel resolution of Whole Slide Images (WSIs) presents a significant computational bottleneck for traditional deep learning workflows that rely on exhaustive sliding-window tiling. Addressing this challenge, we propose a novel coarse-to-fine framework that mimics the pathologist's cognitive screening process by integrating swarm intelligence with deep learning. Specifically, we treat the low-magnification WSI as a two-dimensional search space an

Population-based screening in Australia for breast cancer using mammography has delivered key outcomes in reducing deaths, but such programs are usually not present in Vietnam. Breast cancer is common in both countries, with Vietnamese women having high breast density and Vietnam having low radiology expertise. This paper investigated the performance of two state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) models for cancer detection on Datasets 1 and 2 (Vietnam and Australian mammographic cases) and determined whether the breast density in the two datasets with different vendors affected the AI p

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the malignancy of focal liver lesions (FLLs) is an important yet challenging aspect of routine patient care. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has proved to be a highly reliable tool but is very dependent on the examiner's expertise. The emergence of artificial intelligence has opened doors to algorithms that could potentially aid in the diagnostic process. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a weakly supervised deep learning model in classifying FLLs as malignant or benign.
METHODS: Our retrospective feasibility study was based on a cohort of patients from

Locating diseases in chest X-ray images with few careful annotations saves large human effort. Recent works approached this task with innovative weakly-supervised algorithms such as multi-instance learning (MIL) and class activation maps (CAM), however, these methods often yield inaccurate or incomplete regions. One of the reasons is the neglection of the pathological implications hidden in the relationship across anatomical regions within each image and the relationship across images. In this paper, we argue that the cross-region and cross-image relationship, as contextual and compensating in

Accurate subtyping of lymphomas is critical for guiding treatment decisions and predicting patient outcomes, yet it remains challenging due to overlapping morphological features. This study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning-based diagnostic system, designated BH-LymphDS, to accurately differentiate the three most prevalent lymphoma subtypes: Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), Follicular Lymphoma (FL), and Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL). The system integrates a Swin Transformer backbone with a clustering-constrained attention multiple instance learning (CLAM) algorithm and a k-nearest ne

BACKGROUND: Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to evaluate active inflammatory sacroiliitis related to axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). The qualitative and semiquantitative diagnosis performed by expert radiologists and rheumatologists remains subject to significant intrapersonal and interpersonal variation. This encouraged us to use machine-learning methods for this task.
METHODS: In this retrospective study including 56 sacroiliac joint MRI exams, 24 patients had positive and 32 had negative findings for inflammatory sacroiliitis according to the ASAS group criteria. The da

Peptides, as biologically active molecules, have gained significant attention due to their therapeutic potential in treating various diseases, including metabolic disorders, cancers, and infectious diseases. However, the identification and functional annotation of multifunctional therapeutic peptides (MTPs) still remain challenging due to the limitations of traditional experimental costs and the scarcity of high-quality labeled data. To address these issues, we propose a novel semi-supervised self-training method called MV-MLCF (Multi-View and Multi-Label Co-Forest). MV-MLCF leverages multi-vi

Background and Objectives: Thyroid nodules are lumps of solid or liquid-filled tumors that form inside the thyroid gland, which can be malignant or benign. Our aim was to test whether the described features of the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) could improve radiologists' decision making when integrated into a computer system. In this study, we developed a computer-aided diagnosis system integrated into multiple-instance learning (MIL) that would focus on benign-malignant classification. Data were available from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Materials and Methods:

From a molecular perspective, colorectal cancer is a heterogeneous disease in which microsatellite instability (MSI) phenotypes, mismatch repair (MMR) status, chromosomal instability, or mutations in BRAF, KRAS, NRAS, and TP53 can influence prognosis, hereditary cancer risk assessment, and therapeutic approaches. Conventional biomarker testing via immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction, and next-generation sequencing remains the diagnostic standard, but it can be limited by cost, turnaround time, tissue consumption, and uneven access. This narrative review synthesizes 30 peer-reviewed
