[Malignant fly-grub infection (myiasis) of the ear (author's transl)].

On the basis of an own observation of a malignant fly-grub infection of the ear and by means of a detailed checking of the literature a benignant and a malignant shape of this disease are distinguished. The peculiarities of the mode of infection in relation to the fly-species are described, some apparent typical characteristics of the Muscidae-Larva infection are put out and directions for treatment are given. The disease nearly wrotten in Europe to-day was not a seldom event especially in the eastern parts of Germany.

First record of myiasis in Aplastodiscus arildae (Anura: Hylidae) by Notochaeta bufonivora (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) in the Neotropical area.

Myiasis in anurans is usually caused by diptera from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Chloropidae, and Muscidae families. In this study, one case of cloacal myiasis and one of oral myiasis were registered in Aplastodiscus arildae, caused by Notochaeta bufonivora in Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil. With this report, a new host is listed for N. bufonivora, the first case of tree-frog myiasis caused by sarcophagid flies and the first occurrence of hylid myiasis in the Neotropical area.

Studies on myiasis producing flies collected by bait traps at Al Marg (Qalyobia Governorate), Egypt.

Myiasis is a real welfare problem. As a disease, it affects man and animals. In a study of myiasis producing flies in Al Marg District, sixteen species of dipterous flies were trapped. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lueilia sericata and the least abundance was Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The overall abundance was in Summer followed by Spring and the least was in Winter. The most attractive bait was liver for members of family Calliphoridae and meat for members of family Muscidae and Family Sarcophagidae.

The role of volatile semiochemicals in mediating host location and selection by nuisance and disease-transmitting cattle flies.

The role of volatile semiochemicals in mediating the location and selection within herds of Holstein-Friesian heifers by nuisance and disease-transmitting cattle flies was investigated using coupled gas chromatography-electrophysiology (GC-EAG), coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), electrophysiology (EAG), laboratory behaviour and field studies. Using volatile extracts collected by air entrainment from heifers in the Netherlands, a number of active peaks were located by coupled GC-EAG for Musca autumnalis (de Geer) (Diptera: Muscidae) and Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Mus

Recovery of forensically important insect larvae from human cadavers in Malaysia (1993-1996).

Forensically important entomological specimens recovered from 95 forensic cases of human cadavers from April 1993 to May 1996 in Malaysia were identified and analysed. The results indicated that 73.7% of these specimens were Chrysomya species, occurring either as single or mixed infestations. Of these, the most prominent species were Ch megacephala (F.) and Ch rufifacies (Macquart). Other fly maggots recovered included Sarcophaga spp., Lucilia spp. and Hermetia spp., mostly occurring together with other calliphorine flies. A member of Muscidae fly, Ophyra spp. was also recovered for the first

Environmental variables determining the distribution of an avian parasite: the case of the Philornis torquans complex in South America.

Philornis flies are the major cause of myiasis in nestlings of Neotropical birds, being of major concern in geographically-restricted and endangered bird species. Despite its relevance for the conservation of birds, there is little information about the environmental dimensions determining Philornis spp. geographical range. By using maximum entropy, we identified for the first time the macro-environmental variables constraining the abiotic niche of the P. torquans complex in South America, and provided a model map of its potential distribution based on environmental suitability. We identified

Unusual presence of Ornidia robusta (Diptera: Syrphidae) causing pig myiasis in Argentina.

Myiasis is caused by dipterous larvae from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Cuterebridae, and Syrphidae families. In this work, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Chrysomya megacephala, and Ornidia robusta were identified causing vulva, ear, and leg myiasis in pigs in Tucuman province, northwestern Argentina. The report of the presence of C. hominivorax and C. megacephala is very important due to their role as myiasis-causing and disease vectors. The occurrence of Ornidia robusta is remarkable, since it constitutes the first record of myiasis in general and of myiasis in pigs in particular. L

A systematic review of experimental evidence on microbial pathogen transmission by Stomoxys spp.

Vector-borne microbial pathogens previously isolated from Stomoxys spp. are currently considered to be emerging or re-emerging threats to public health and the veterinary sector. Transmission of pathogens by flies in the Stomoxys genus is largely mechanical, indicating that they can transmit a wide range of pathogens to a variety of hosts. This study evaluated the diversity of pathogens demonstrably transmitted by a variety of Stomoxys flies, concerning species diversity, host diversity, and geographic distribution. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) gu

Skin lesions and cattle hide damage from Haematobia irritans infestations.

The horn fly Haematobia irritans L. (Diptera: Muscidae) has recently spread to Argentina and Uruguay and is believed to cause damage to cattle hides. Four groups of ten Holstein steers each were maintained for 58 weeks under different infestation levels with H. irritans to determine if it was the cause of this problem. Hides (chrome tanned) from steers maintained under minimum infestation level had 4.7 +/- 3.8% of the area damaged. Maintaining the steers under low H. irritans level for the last 44 days of the trial using insecticidal ear-tags, resulted in 29.5 +/- 15.8% of hide area being dama

Is the grass always greener on the other side? Weak relationships between vegetation cover and parasitic fly infestations.

Understanding parasite-host ecology is increasingly important for conservation efforts in a changing world. Parasitic nest flies in the genus Philornis (Diptera: Muscidae) have been implicated in the decline of endemic island species and are also known to negatively impact breeding success of the critically endangered Ridgway's hawk (B. ridgwayi) on the island of Hispaniola. Despite the importance of these effects on hosts, and extensive research of Philornis downsi in the Galápagos, the ecology of most species of philornid nest flies is poorly understood. We examined biotic factors related to

Wound myiasis by housefly in a patient with pemphigus vulgaris in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates by dipterous larvae. Cutaneous myiasis is the most common form, although many organs can be infected by these larvae. Cutaneous myiasis is divided into 3 forms: localized furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis, which have a worldwide distribution, but tropical and subtropical countries have a heavier burden of the disease. Herein, we report a case of scalp wound myiasis in a patient with pemphigus vulgaris caused by Muscidae domestica (M. domestica) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Cases of M. domestica myiasis are limited in the literature. We would li

Incidence of myiasis in Panama during the eradication of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel 1858, Diptera: Calliphoridae) (2002-2005).

We present the results of a study on myiasis in Panama during the first years of a Cochliomyia hominivorax eradication program (1998-2005), with the aim of investigating the behavior of the flies that produce myiasis in animals and human beings. The hosts that registered positive for myiasis were cattle (46.4%), dogs (15.3%), humans (14.7%), birds (12%), pigs (6%), horses (4%), and sheep (1%). Six fly species caused myiasis: Dermatobia hominis (58%), Phaenicia spp. (20%), Cochliomyia macellaria (19%), Chrysomya rufifacies (0.4%), and maggots of unidentified species belonging to the Sarcophagid

Field evaluation of Nzi and modified Nzi traps for sampling of Stomoxys calcitrans at dairy farms in Uruguay.

Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758), the stable fly, is a hematophagous pest that affects animal livestock worldwide by lowering productivity and mechanically transmitting pathogens. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Nzi trap and a modified version (with and without bait) for capturing stable flies on two dairy farms in southwestern Uruguay, under conditions of natural infestation by these flies. The study used a 4 × 4 Latin square design with five replicates conducted independently at each dairy farm. Traps at each dairy were emptied daily to identify and count stable flies befor

Thelazia lacrymalis in horses from Romania: epidemiology, morphology and phylogenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Equine thelaziosis is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease in modern veterinary medicine, lacking recent reports. It is transmitted by Musca autumnalis, and potentially other Muscidae species, by ingesting the lachrymal secretions of its equine host. The distribution of both Thelazia lacrymalis and its intermediate hosts remains largely unknown throughout Europe, with most studies dating back 20 years. The aim of this study was to assess the presence, prevalence and distribution of T. lacrymalis in horses from Romania. METHODS: The eyes of 273 horses, slaughtered at two abat
