Journal of veterinary diagnostic investigation : official publication of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, Inc2022eng
In human and veterinary medicine, mixed Müllerian tumors (MMTs) are rarely diagnosed neoplasms of the tubular female genital tract. Although there are case reports of malignant MMTs in various species, benign MMTs have only been described once in a macaque. Here we present a case of benign MMT in a 12-y-old goat, and review the literature on uterine, cervical, and vaginal neoplasia in goats. The doe was presented with vaginal discharge and was euthanized because of the high suspicion of intraabdominal neoplasia. On gross examination, an ulcerated vaginal mass was identified. Histologically, 2

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms which can arise from almost any location in the body. Diagnosing them pre-operatively is difficult as they mimic features of other hepatic neoplasms including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), fibrolamellar HCC, and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) among others. The unique feature of these tumors is the coexpression of muscle and melanocytic markers. These are identified immunohistochemically by the expression of Human Melanin Black-45 (HMB-45), Melan-A and Smooth Muscle Antigen (SMA) which are seen in the majority of t

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the liver can be diagnostically challenging, particularly on core needle biopsies. Here, I discuss recent updates in neoplasms that are specific to the liver (mesenchymal hamartoma, undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma, calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumor), vascular tumors of the liver (anastomosing hemangioma, hepatic small vessel neoplasm, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, angiosarcoma), and other tumor types that can occur primarily in the liver (PEComa/angiomyolipoma, inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma, EBV-associated smooth muscle

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that usually maintains a harmonious relationship with its host. Rarely, this host-virus balance is perturbed, causing a diverse group of malignancies in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. In addition to its role in hematologic malignancies (Burkitt lymphoma, subsets of Hodgkin and T-cell lymphomas, posttransplant lymphomas), EBV has been implicated in both epithelial (undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a subset of gastric adenocarcinomas) and mesenchymal (EBV-associated smooth muscle tumor, inflammatory pseudotumo

The computed tomographic scans (CT) of 84 patients with untreated soft-tissue neoplasms were studied, 75 with primary and nine with secondary lesions. Each scan was evaluated using several criteria: homogeneity and density, presence and type of calcification, presence of bony destruction, involvement of multiple muscle groups, definition of adjacent fat, border definition, and vessel or nerve involvement. CT demonstrated the lesion in all 84 patients and showed excellent anatomic detail in 64 of the 75 patients with primary neoplasms. CT did not differentiate vessel or nerve entrapment from ne

Aberrant lacrimal gland tissue within the muscle cone formed a pleomorphic adenoma (benign mixed tumor). Histopathologically, the lesion was identical to similar neoplasms originating from lacrimal and other salivary glands as well as from other serous glands of the body.

CONTEXT: Perivascular epithelial cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms which share cellular, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics but are found in different visceral and soft tissue sites. PEComas of the pancreas are extremely rare neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 49-year-old male who was incidentally diagnosed with a pancreatic mass. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy suggested a PEComa. An uneventful pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was thus performed. The tumor was a solid well-circumscribed mass in the pancreatic head with dila

Epithelioid angioleiomyoma (EALM) is rare in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. To the best of our knowledge, only two previous cases of this tumor have been reported. We document here the case of an 83-year-old woman who underwent complete removal of a squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone and lymph node dissection of the neck. An incidental EALM was observed in the adipose tissue. The tumor formed a unilocular, poorly demarcated neoplasm measuring 0.3 cm, and showed cavernous angiomatous spaces with villiform growth of large epithelioid cells arranged in clusters. Besides the epi

A benign neoplasm of smooth muscle origin was found in the tunica vaginalis testis of a 13-year-old male Miniature Poodle. The leiomyoma had caused hydrocele and atrophy of the corresponding testis. It consisted of bundles of interwoven smooth muscle cells with elongated nuclei and areas of hyalinization.

Leiomyoma is a benign myogenic tumor that may develop wherever smooth muscle is present. It occurs commonly in the uterus, skin, and gastrointestinal tract and is rare within the nasal cavity. Only three of twenty-four reported cases of sinonasal leiomyoma have been found to originate from the nasal septum. Treatment of choice for these neoplasms is surgical excision. We present two cases of nasal septal leiomyoma. Unique features discussed include recurrence of one neoplasm and the technique used to endoscopically repair a cerebrospinal fluid leak resulting from resection of the neoplasm.

Teratocarcinosarcoma is rare malignant sinonasal neoplasm with immature and malignant endodermal, mesodermal, and neuroepithelial elements resembling immature teratoma, commonly with SMARCA4 loss or activating CTNNB1 mutation. The carcinoma component may be either squamous or adenocarcinoma and the mesenchymal component may be composed of spindle cells, cartilage, bone, smooth muscle, or skeletal muscle. Due to the uncommon nature of this malignancy, there are frequently diagnostic difficulties that result in management problems. Herein we report a teratocarcinosarcoma arising in the nasal cav

We report the clinicopathologic features of 24 uterine primary and metastatic endometrial stromal sarcomas with fibromyxoid features (ESS-F) and smooth muscle differentiation (ESS-SM) (endometrial stromal sarcoma variants). Two groups of tumors were retrieved from the surgical pathology files at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: 1) gynecologic mesenchymal neoplasms with striking smooth muscle or fibroblastic differentiation that did not meet the clinical or histologic criteria for leiomyosarcoma or other established neoplasms containing smooth muscle; and 2) metastatic lesions showing ov

This study from India has envisaged a characterization of primary carcinomas of the ureter using a review of all available Indian literature over a period of 32 years. The character of the tumor in the Indian patients was clinically; pain, abdominal lump and haematuria with most neoplasms being single, situated in the ureteric pelvis and such neoplasms being squamous cell in type. The others were transitional cell carcinomas. Similar ureteric neoplasms reported from Western literature showed that the reporting authors gave the predominant complaint as haematuria alone, the neoplasm being usual

BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) are benign smooth muscle neoplasms with limited genetic characterization. Molecular investigations may improve diagnostic classification and enhance understanding of their biological behavior.
METHODS: RNA sequencing using multiple fusion-detection algorithms was performed on an ileal leiomyoma. Key findings were validated by RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS: A MYH11::GLI3 fusion was identified. Additional chimeric transcripts were detected but interpreted as secondary events based on limited read support. The biological relevanc

(1) Introduction: Leiomyosarcomas are highly aggressive mesenchymal neoplasm derived from smooth muscle cells which, in the mediastinum, are present in various primary organs; To our knowledge, less than 10 cases of primary mediastinal leiomyosarcoma have been described. Here, we report a compelling case of primary mediastinal leiomyosarcoma. (2) Case presentation: A 79-year-old woman was admitted to the Thoracic Surgery Unit of S. Andrea University Hospital for persisting cough, exertional dyspnea, and sternal pain. After multidisciplinary consultation, a CT-guided core needle biopsy of the m

The diagnostic spectrum of spindle cell neoplasms arising in the retroperitoneum is wide and, in the presence of commonly shared morphologic features, it may be challenging to establish a correct diagnosis in certain cases. Beyond seemingly undifferentiated spindle cell morphology, most neoplasms may reveal distinctive adipocytic, smooth muscle or myofibroblastic or nerve sheath differentiation and show additional diagnostic clues or characteristic molecular abnormalities. Obtaining sufficient and representative biopsy material, a thorough work-up, and extensive sampling of gross specimens fol

Ultrasound may be the preferred initial diagnostic modality for the painful swollen extremity, the palpable extremity mass, and the injured extremity. The role of ultrasound in extremity soft tissue abnormalities, including muscle hemorrhage and injury, inflammatory processes, and soft tissue neoplasms, is the subject of this review.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle cell origin, is relatively rare in birds. This study presents the occurrence of this tumour in a 2-year-old male budgerigar. The bird was brought to the Ashian Veterinary Hospital with complaints of swelling in the medial area of the left leg. Clinical examination and radiological imaging confirmed the presence of soft tissue swelling in the medial region of the left leg. Empirical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy were used to distinguish infectious inflammation from the tumour mass. After 12 days, a clinical diagnosis of susp

Three cases of atypical lipomatous tumor with areas of smooth muscle are presented. The patients were a 49-year-old man, a 45-year-old woman, and a 63-year-old man; their neoplasms were located in the spermatic cord, the mediastinum, and the retroperitoneum, respectively. The smooth muscle foci were well differentiated in all cases. Smooth muscle was present in the primary tumor in the first and second cases (spermatic cord and mediastinum) and in a recurrence in the second case (there has been no recurrence in the first case). In the third case (retroperitoneum), smooth muscle was found only

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) encompass a wide and unusual group of neoplasms with features of neural differentiation. They most commonly present as spindle cell neoplasms and it can be difficult to differentiate them from other spindle cell neoplasms such as leiomyosarcomas, fibrosarcomas and synovial sarcomas. Strict criteria need to be applied in order to make the diagnosis of MPNSTs. Helpful features include contiguity with a nerve or an association with von Recklinghausen disease. The use of immunohistochemical stains may also help to confirm the diagnosis. Markers suc
