The striated muscles of breathing play a critical role in respiratory homeostasis governing blood oxygenation and pH regulation. Upper airway dilator and thoracic pump muscles retain a remarkable capacity for plasticity throughout life, both in health and disease states. Hypoxia, whatever the cause, is a potent driver of respiratory muscle remodeling with evidence of adaptive and maladaptive outcomes for system performance. The pattern, duration, and intensity of hypoxia are key determinants of respiratory muscle structural-, metabolic-, and functional responses and adaptation. Age and sex als

Muscle strength imbalance can be an important factor in hamstrings muscle strain. A hamstrings/quadriceps (H/Q) strength ratio based on concentric peak torque values (Hcon:Qcon) has traditionally been used to describe the potential for knee-joint destabilization. Because certain standard actions in soccer are explosive, the analysis of the H/Q strength ratio based on the rate of torque development (Hrtd:Qrtd) might also be useful in the evaluation of joint stability. The objective of this study was to compare the Hrtd:Qrtd between professional soccer players with heterogeneous values of Hcon:Q

We investigated the effects of the subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) on shoulder sensory-motor control and maximal shoulder muscle strength. It was hypothesized that both would be impaired due to chronic shoulder pain associated with the syndrome. Nine subjects with unilateral SIS who remained physically active in spite of shoulder pain and nine healthy matched controls were examined to determine isometric and isokinetic submaximal shoulder-abduction force steadiness at target forces corresponding to 20%, 27.5%, and 35% of the maximal shoulder abductor torque, and maximal shoulder muscle

Alterations to the body composition, i.e. the makeup of skeletal muscle, fat and bone density, are frequent in heart insufficiency. Their prevalence and clinical consequences are often underestimated. Cachexia is recognized as a complex multifactorial syndrome in chronic diseases that leads to weight loss. This point constitutes the essential differential criterion from sarcopenia. Cachexia is defined as a non-edematous weight loss of more than 5% within 12 months or less. Cachexia means weight loss, while sarcopenia means loss of muscle mass without weight loss because the functional muscle c

BACKGROUND: A decline in muscle mass and function can impact the health, disease vulnerability, and mortality of older adults. Prolonged use of high doses of glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone (DEX), can cause muscle wasting and reduced strength. Ginsenoside Rc (gRc) has been shown to protect muscles by activating the PGC-1α pathway and improving mitochondrial function. The effects of gRc on muscle atrophy and function in mice are not fully understood.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The study discovered that gRc prevented the DEX-induced decrease in viability of C2C12 myoblasts and myotubes. Furthe

Muscle weakness is considered a risk factor for ankle injury. Balance training and barefoot running have been used in an attempt to strengthen the muscles crossing the ankle. It is expected that training tasks that successfully strengthen the ankle would elicit increased muscular activity. However, it is unknown how an individual's ankle strength will influence the muscle activity used during a given task. Twenty-six participants performed dynamic (shod, barefoot running) and static tasks (squat on ground, squat on ®Bosu Ball) believed to strengthen the muscles surrounding the ankle. Electromy

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training stimulates muscle size and strength by increasing muscle activation, accumulation of metabolites and muscle swelling. This method has been used in different populations, but no studies have evaluated the effects of training on muscle power and submaximal strength (SS) in accounted for the menstrual cycle. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of strength training (ST) with BFR on the muscle power and SS of upper and lower limbs in eumenorrheic women. Forty untrained women (18-40 years) were divided randomly and proportionally into four groups: (i

INTRODUCTION: Grip strength plays a critical role in sports involving the upper extremities, prompting extensive research in this area. This study investigated the forearm muscles, which are considered to be closely associated with grip strength, with the aim of quantitatively evaluating how individual muscles are influenced by variations in grip strength by using shear wave speed measurements.
METHODS: Grip strength was measured using a grip strength dynamometer, and muscle stiffness was evaluated using shear wave elastography to determine shear wave speed. Forearm muscle shear wave speed me

Context: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vital compound found in nearly all cells, and in mitochondria, it facilitates ATP production, and its reduced form acts as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and preventing oxidative damage. Notably, during intense or endurance exercise, the body's increased energy demands and ROS production can lead to oxidative stress, muscle fatigue, inflammation, and exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Objectives: This review will explore the mechanisms of CoQ10, its impact on exercise performance to be addressed. Results: CoQ10 has been

Adolescent childbirth is associated with worse physical function over the long-term. Differential loss of muscle strength during pregnancy and postpartum for adolescents compared to adults may be one explanation for this, but research examining these differences is lacking. The objective of this study as to assess hand grip strength and hip adduction muscle strength in adolescents and adults during pregnancy and postpartum. A prospective cohort study was carried out with adolescent (13 to 18 years) and adult (23 to 28 years) primigravid women. Assessments were performed at three timepoints: be

The muscle fiber ultrastructure in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIM) has been scarcely explored, especially in Inclusion Body Myositis. The aim of this study was to implement the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in a small cohort of IIM patients, together with the characterization of immunological profile for a better understanding of the pathophysiology. For immunological profile characterization, we identified the presence of autoantibodies (Ro-52, OJ, EJ, PL7, PL12, SRP, Jo-1, PMScl75, PMScl100, Ku, SAE1, NXP2, MDA5, TIF1γ, Mi-2α, Mi-2β) and quantified cytokines (IL-1β, IFN-α2, IFN

BACKGROUND: Although extensor hallucis longus (EHL) strength has been identified as a primary predictor of L5 nerve root radiculopathy and deep peroneal nerve palsy, assessment of EHL strength is commonly overlooked. This is mainly due to the lack of an objective and accurate method for evaluation, since manual muscle testing (MMT) has not been well utilized. A study of the reliability of evaluating MMT in various toe positions was performed.
METHODS: To determine the reliability and validity of MMT for great toe extension, 40 normal volunteers (80 toes) with good muscle strength were recruit

The purpose of this study was to compare maximal torque exerted about the craniocervical (CC) and cervicothoracic (CT) axes in the sagittal plane using a novel dynamometry device. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) recordings in newton-meters (N·m) were measured in 20 males and 20 females for each of 4 tests: CT extension, CT flexion, CC extension, CC flexion. Twenty of the volunteers repeated the testing procedure on a second occasion to determine the test-retest repeatability of the measures. MVC recordings at the CT axis (extension, 30.24 ± 12.15 N·m; flexion, 18.90 ± 8.21 N·m) were 1.4-2

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to attempt to gain a clear picture of the magnitude of strength improvements expected after acute and chronic vibration training and to identify specific factors that influence the treatment effects. Studies employing a strength training intervention and containing data necessary to calculate effect size (ES) were included in the analysis. A total of 31 studies met the inclusion criterion. Analysis of ES demonstrated that the type of vibration platform employed is a moderator of the treatment effect of vibration on strength development. Differences were no

A nine-month infant, weighing 9.8 kg, presented with hypotonia secondary to acute hypokalaemia (1.0 mmol/l). Muscle strength improved as the serum potassium was increased. Muscle strength was assessed by the pressure generated inside a saline-filled endotracheal tube cuff during a grasp reflex. Potassium concentration and hand grip strength were related using a sigmoidal Emax model. Zero effect was assumed when the potassium concentration was zero. The Emax, EC50 and Hill coefficient values were determined by non-linear regression using the MKMODEL program. Parameter estimates (SE) were EC50 1
