Lower extremity isokinetic muscle strength in patients with Parkinson's disease.

We evaluated lower extremity isokinetic muscle strength to determine affected muscle groups and their dependence on movement velocity, and to establish the relationship between muscle strength and clinical severity, as well as muscle strength and falls, in Parkinson's disease (PD). Twenty-five patients diagnosed with PD and 24 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Lower extremity muscle strength was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. Each participant's clinical status was examined in accordance with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale; fall history was also recorded.

Relationship between Muscle Strength and Gait Parameters in Healthy Older Women and Men.

Maintaining sufficient muscle strength is fundamental to prevent a decline in basic physical functions such as gait, and is therefore a prerequisite for a healthy independent life in older people. However, the relationship between gait parameters and the strength of single muscle groups is reported with inconclusive results. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship of strength of nine single muscle groups of lower and upper leg muscles as well as handgrip strength for gait parameters in older adults. Sixty-nine independently living older adults participated in the study. Max

Validity, reliability, and diagnostic accuracy of the InGrip digital dynamometer compared with the Jamar hydraulic model in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Handgrip strength is essential for diagnosing sarcopenia and assessing muscle function in older adults. The Jamar hydraulic dynamometer, backed by strong clinical and epidemiological data, is widely used; however, weight and calibration requirements may limit use. Digital models such as InGrip offer stable calibration and ergonomic design. This study aimed to validate accuracy, reliability, and diagnostic performance of InGrip versus the Jamar. METHODS: A cross-sectional, randomized, single-center study of 415 community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 75.3 ± 6.5 years). Handgri

Motor function-muscle strength relationship in spinal muscular atrophy.

The relationship between motor function and muscle strength in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is still controversial. In 120 genetically proven SMA patients, aged 5 years or older, we measured muscle strength in the arms and legs by a hand-held dynamometer, forced vital capacity by a spirometer, and the time needed to walk 10 m, arise from the floor, and climb steps. SMA patients had markedly reduced muscle strength, approximating 20% of that predicted from age- and gender-matched normative data. Knee extensors were the weakest muscles in SMA patients. The young ambulant SMA patie

Effects of a shoulder injury prevention strength training program on eccentric external rotator muscle strength and glenohumeral joint imbalance in female overhead activity athletes.

Imbalance of the eccentrically-activated external rotator cuff muscles versus the concentrically-activated internal rotator cuff muscles is a primary risk factor for glenohumeral joint injuries in overhead activity athletes. Nonisokinetic dynamometer based strength training studies, however, have focused exclusively on resulting concentric instead of applicable eccentric strength gains of the external rotator cuff muscles. Furthermore, previous strength training studies did not result in a reduction in glenoumeral joint muscle imbalance, thereby suggesting that currently used shoulder strength

Body Fat Percentage Is More Strongly Associated With Handgrip Strength Than Body Mass Index Among North Indian Adults.

Background Muscle strength is a key factor determining metabolic health, physical performance, and morbidity. Although body mass index (BMI) is used widely to assess obesity, it does not assess body composition adequately. Percentage body fat (PBF) could provide a better estimate of adiposity and its association with muscle strength, particularly in Asian populations with higher body fat at lower BMI levels. We aimed to evaluate the associations of BMI and PBF with HGS and lower limb muscle strength among North Indian adults and to compare the independent associations of BMI and PBF with HGS.

Analysis of elbow muscle strength parameters in Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners.

Upper-body dynamic and isometric maximum strength are essential components for success in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). This study was aimed at analysing strength parameters in the elbow flexor and extensor muscles of BJJ practitioners. Participants (n = 28) performed maximum isometric contractions of elbow flexors and extensors to determine peak torque (PT), rate of force development (RFD), and the torque-angle (T-A) relationship at elbow angles of 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°, 105°, and 120°. Additionally, concentric and eccentric PTs were measured at 1.04 rad·s-1. Student t-test and ANOVA were performed
