Daily associations between sleep and pain in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Patients with chronic pain commonly report sleep problems, and the evidence for a relationship between sleep disturbance and pain seems robust. The day-to-day associations between these constructs are less well studied, particularly with objective sleep measures such as actigraphy. Moreover, the concurrent presence of negative affective symptoms, as well as seasonality effects at extreme latitudes may complicate it further. Here, we studied 56 patients with chronic primary musculoskeletal pain conditions, contributing data in two separate 7-day data-collection periods during the summer and win

Relationship of musculoskeletal pain and well-being at work - Does pain matter?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Musculoskeletal pain is a common symptom and many people even with chronic pain continue to work. The aim of our study is to analyze how musculoskeletal pain affects work well-being by comparing work engagement in employees with or without pain, and how pain-related risk of disability is associated with work engagement. In a separate analysis, we also studied, how psychosocial factors are related to work engagement. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of Finnish female employees of the city of Pori, Finland (PORi To Aid Against Threats (PORTAAT) study). Data was coll

The effects of chronic stretch training on musculoskeletal pain.

PURPOSE: One of the primary mechanisms for the increase in range of motion following stretching is an increase in pain/stretch tolerance. However, it remains unclear whether stretching can reduce pain in patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to investigate whether chronic stretch training can decrease pain in patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: In our search, we included three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and after removing duplicates, screened 797 papers. Six papers were found to be eligible for

Causes of Musculoskeletal Pain in Paget's Disease of Bone.

Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is characterised by increased and disorganised bone remodelling leading to various complications, such as bone deformity, deafness, secondary osteoarthritis, and pathological fracture. Pain is the most common presenting symptom of PDB, but it is unclear to what extent this is due to increased metabolic activity of the disease, complications, or unrelated causes. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 168 people with PDB attending secondary care referral centres in the UK. We documented the presence of musculoskeletal pain and sought to determine its underlying ca

The effects of curcuminoids on musculoskeletal pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Western countries are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to assist with relieving ailments. Turmeric, from the ginger family Zingiberaceae, has a history of use for medicinal purposes. The polyphenols found in turmeric (curcuminoids) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. With the use of CAMs increasing, it is important for the effectiveness of curcuminoids to be established. OBJECTIVES: To identify the effectiveness of the use of curcuminoids for the amelioration of musculoskeletal pain. INCLUSION CRITERIA TYPES OF PARTICI

Epidemiology of musculoskeletal pain in a pediatric emergency department.

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the percentage of emergency department (ED) visits due to musculoskeletal pain (MSP) by children 3-14 years of age during a period of 1 year; (2) to determine the most frequent presenting complaints; and (3) to characterize their etiology. A cross-sectional study was performed on children aged 3-14(11/12) years attended at the ED of a tertiary hospital due to MSP. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were reviewed 5 days each month for 12 consecutive months. Study days were selected by computer-generated simple random s

Interrelationships between chronic tension-type headache, musculoskeletal pain, and vitamin D deficiency: Is osteomalacia responsible for both headache and musculoskeletal pain?

BACKGROUND: Headache, musculoskeletal symptoms, and vitamin D deficiency are common in the general population. However, the interrelations between these three have not been delineated in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied a consecutive series of patients who were diagnosed as having chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) and were subjected to the estimation of serum vitamin D levels. The subjects were divided into two groups according to serum 25(OH) D levels as normal (>20 ng/ml) or vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/ml). RESULTS: We identified 71 such patients. Fifty-

The Rationale for Using Neridronate in Musculoskeletal Disorders: From Metabolic Bone Diseases to Musculoskeletal Pain.

Neridronate or ((6-amino-1-hydroxy-1-phosphonohexyl) phosphonic acid) is an amino-bisphosphonate (BP) synthetized in Italy in 1986. Bisphosphonates are molecules with a P-C-P bond in their structure that allows strong and selectively binding to hydroxyapatite (HAP) as well as osteoclasts inhibition through different mechanisms of action. Neridronate was initially used to treat Paget disease of the bone, demonstrating effectiveness in reducing bone turnover markers as well as pain. The interesting molecular properties of neridronate foster its wide use in several other conditions, such as osteo

The Clinician's Guide to Differential Diagnosis of Non-Localized Musculoskeletal Pain A Primer on Musculoskeletal Medicine.

Orthopedic surgeons may encounter patients with musculo- skeletal complaints that are not localized to a specific joint or anatomical area. The list of diagnoses that may cause generalized pain originating from bones, muscles, fasciae, and joints, including surrounding tissues like tendons, ligaments, and bursae, is vast; starting with influenza or fibromyalgia and ending with mycetism and ultra-rare he- reditary disorders. A systematic multidisciplinary approach is required. Many of these patients require referral to rheu- matology, endocrinology, or other specialties but at least a basic und

Pain-related Beliefs, Coping Strategies and Pain Catastrophization in Older People with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

Background Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a major health concern among older people. The experience of chronic musculoskeletal pain is influenced by psychosocial factors such as beliefs, coping strategies, and pain catastrophizing. It is believed that culture can influence pain related factors and psychosocial factors vary across different cultures. Objective To identify the common pain-related beliefs, coping strategies and pain catastrophizing in older people with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Method A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Dhulikhel among 150 older people. Semi

Opioid Exposure and Associated Numeric Pain Scores in Adults with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

The opioid epidemic claims tens of thousands of lives annually in the United States (US) where opioids are prescribed more per capita than in any other country. Primary care providers contribute to nearly half of these prescriptions, often for chronic non-cancer pain conditions such as back, hip, and knee pain. Despite widespread use, evidence suggests that opioids do not improve pain control for chronic non-cancer musculoskeletal pain. This study aimed to assess whether an opioid prescription in the three months preceding internal medicine primary care appointments was associated with lower p

CSI and Musculoskeletal Pain: Clinical Validity and Neurophysiological Implications.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chronic pain affects about 20% of adults worldwide, severely impacting quality of life and functioning. Many chronic pain syndromes share symptoms such as fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, and depression, suggesting a common mechanism. Central sensitization, an abnormal amplification of pain by the nervous system, is considered a key underlying factor. Assessment tools like the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) and laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) may improve diagnosis and guide targeted treatment strategies. This review evaluates the validity of the CSI for assessing central

[Musculoskeletal pain: a case of disease HbSC/alpha-thalassemia].

Sickle cell disease is an inherited chronic haemolytic anaemia whose clinical manifestations arise from the tendency of the haemoglobin to polymerize and deform red blood cells into the characteristic sickle shape (HbS), with vaso-occlusive phenomena, pain and organ damage. Sickle cell anaemia, the prototype disease, is the homozygous state and represents the most severe form of sickle cell disease. A variety of other sickle cell syndromes are a result of an interaction between HbS and certain variant haemoglobins as HbC and thalassemia. We describe the case of a 28-year-old, black man, with r
