Pre-Season Screening Assessments: Normative Data for Pre-Professional Ballet Dancers.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-professional dance is high-risk, with injury incidence up to 4.7 injuries/1000 dance hours. Pre-season screening measures have been utilized to assess risk factors for dance-related injury, however normative values haven't been established for a pre-professional ballet population. The purpose of this study was to establish normative values of ankle and hip joint range of motion (ROM), lumbopelvic control, and dynamic balance pre-season screening measures for pre-professional ballet dancers. METHODS: 498 adolescent pre-professional ballet dancers [n = 219 junior division (194 f

The current state of traumatology and orthopedics.

The efficacy of treatment for orthopedic trauma patients has improved slowly compared to advances in other areas of orthopedics, e.g., poliomyelitis, bone infection, microvascular surgery, and endoprosthetic devices. Further progress will only be possible by reappraising a number of traditional methods and opinions. In this regard, four proposals are noteworthy: (1) a transfer of attention from predominantly clinical to theoretical research; (2) clarification of terminology to enable effective computerization and development of automated search systems; (3) improvement of the quality of clinic

In sickness and in health: The functional role of extracellular vesicles in physiology and pathology in vivo: Part I: Health and Normal Physiology: Part I: Health and Normal Physiology.

Previously thought to be nothing more than cellular debris, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are now known to mediate physiological and pathological functions throughout the body. We now understand more about their capacity to transfer nucleic acids and proteins between distant organs, the interaction of their surface proteins with target cells, and the role of vesicle-bound lipids in health and disease. To date, most observations have been made in reductionist cell culture systems, or as snapshots from patient cohorts. The heterogenous population of vesicles produced in vivo likely act in concert

Enthesopathies as occupational stress markers: evidence from the upper limb.

Enthesopathies--that is, "musculo-skeletal stress markers"--are frequently used to reconstruct past lifestyles and activity patterns. Relatively little attention has been paid in physical anthropology to methodological gaps implicit in this approach: almost all methods previously employed neglect current medical insights into enthesopathies and the distinction between healthy and pathological aspects has been arbitrary. This study presents a new visual method of studying fibrocartilaginous enthesopathies of the upper limb (modified from Villotte: Bull Mém Soc Anthropol Paris n.s. 18 (2006) 65-

Stem cells from umbilical cord and placenta for musculoskeletal tissue engineering.

Mesenchymal stem cells isolated from amnion/amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, placental tissue, umbilical cord vein and the Wharton's Jelly are promising candidates for musculoskeletal tissue engineering of bone and cartilage tissues. The extracorporeal nature of this source avoids the ethical concerns that plague the isolation of embryonic stem cells. Moreover, the harvesting does not require the invasive and discomfort extraction procedures as well as patient risks that attend adult stem cell isolation. Current preclinical studies support the application of these cell-based therapies for

Spinal mechanisms may provide a combination of intermittent and continuous control of human posture: predictions from a biologically based neuromusculoskeletal model.

Several models have been employed to study human postural control during upright quiet stance. Most have adopted an inverted pendulum approximation to the standing human and theoretical models to account for the neural feedback necessary to keep balance. The present study adds to the previous efforts in focusing more closely on modelling the physiological mechanisms of important elements associated with the control of human posture. This paper studies neuromuscular mechanisms behind upright stance control by means of a biologically based large-scale neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) model. It encompa

Effect of push handle height on net moments and forces on the musculoskeletal system during standardized wheelchair pushing tasks.

The aim of this investigation was to analyze the external forces and biomechanical loading on the musculoskeletal system during wheelchair pushing, in relation to different push handle heights. In addition, recommendations for wheelchair pushing in accordance with push handle height are made. Eight young, female subjects carried out three different wheelchair transport tasks at five different push handle heights in a standardized laboratory setting. Five pushing heights were selected as a percentage of the subjects shoulder height (61, 69.5, 78, 86.5 and 95%). All three wheelchair transport ta

Contemporary stable isotope tracer approaches: Insights into skeletal muscle metabolism in health and disease.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? This review discusses the application of new stable isotope tracer techniques in understanding the control of skeletal muscle mass. What advances does it highlight? This review highlights current advances in stable isotope tracer techniques through their combination with high-throughput proteomics technologies. ABSTRACT: Beyond its primary locomotory and key structural functions, skeletal muscle provides additional vital roles for maintenance of metabolic health, acting as a storage point for glucose and intramuscular lipids for energy productio

Skeletal deformities associated with nutritional congenital rickets in newborn lambs.

CASE HISTORY: A group of 545 pregnant rising 2-year-old Coopdale ewes on a Southland sheep farm were grazed over winter on a fodder beet (Beta vulgaris) crop. Subsequently, 45 out of approximately 750 lambs were born with a variety of skeletal deformities, including shortened limbs, varus and valgus angular limb deformities, palmar grade stance and cranial bowing of the carpus. Analysis of the crop showed the fodder beet contained a low percentage of phosphorus. In addition, 60 out of 460 rising 2-year-old ewes that had been grazed on the fodder beet crop as 1-year-olds had incisor abnormaliti

Handstands: a treatment for supraventricular tachycardia?

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is the most common symptomatic tachyarrhythmia in childhood. Treatment involves vagal manoeuvres, pharmacological agents or electrical cardioversion. We report a child with recurrent SVT secondary to Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome who is consistently able to revert her SVT by doing a handstand. This case highlights a simple non-invasive technique for the treatment of SVT.

Musculoskeletal function in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis using the pediatric outcomes data collection instrument.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal function is often the limiting factor in quality of life in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). The Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) is a validated tool to be used in children aged 2 to 18 years with chronic musculoskeletal disorders and is freely available to any investigator. The goal of this study is to establish normative data for patients with MPS. METHODS: Of our 25 patients with MPS, 16 had PODCI's performed at initial evaluation. This included 4 patients with MPS IH (Hurler), 7 patients with MPS II (Hunter), 4 patients with MPS I

Historical review: suspension therapy for the treatment of tabes dorsalis.

BACKGROUND: Suspension therapy was developed by a Russian doctor, A. Motschutkovsky and at the end of the 19th century it was a popular treatment for tabes dorsalis. It was endorsed by Jean-Martin Charcot in France and Weir Mitchell in the United States; but after 10 years, it was abandoned because it proved to be useless and some patients developed paralysis. SUMMARY: The effect of suspension upon a spinal cord affected by tabes dorsalis and a healthy spinal cord has been analyzed in the light of current knowledge. The benefits of suspension were thought to be due to an improvement in the bl

Muscle, bone, and the Utah paradigm: a 1999 overview.

The still-evolving Utah paradigm of skeletal physiology supplements former ideas about the control of postnatal bone strength and "mass" in health and disease, on earth and in orbit, and as functions of physical activities including sports. In its view, peak muscle forces on bone dominate control of the biologic mechanisms that control changes in our postnatal whole-bone strength and mass. This contrasts with former ideas that chiefly nonmechanical factors dominate that control and mechanical factors have little influence on it. The newer view begs the question of how such a bone-muscle relati

Large1 gene transfer in older myd mice with severe muscular dystrophy restores muscle function and greatly improves survival.

Muscular dystrophy is a progressive and ultimately lethal neuromuscular disease. Although gene editing and gene transfer hold great promise as therapies when administered before the onset of severe clinical symptoms, it is unclear whether these strategies can restore muscle function and improve survival in the late stages of muscular dystrophy. Largemyd/Largemyd (myd) mice lack expression of like-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-1 (Large1) and exhibit severe muscle pathophysiology, impaired mobility, and a markedly reduced life span. Here, we show that systemic delivery of AAV2/9 CMV Large1 (AAVL

Comparison of short- and long-acting benzodiazepine-receptor agonists with different receptor selectivity on motor coordination and muscle relaxation following thiopental-induced anesthesia in mice.

In this study, we compared the effects of Type I benzodiazepine receptor-selective agonists (zolpidem, quazepam) and Type I/II non-selective agonists (zopiclone, triazolam, nitrazepam) with either an ultra-short action (zolpidem, zopiclone, triazolam) or long action (quazepam, nitrazepam) on motor coordination (rota-rod test) and muscle relaxation (traction test) following the recovery from thiopental-induced anesthesia (20 mg/kg) in ddY mice. Zolpidem (3 mg/kg), zopiclone (6 mg/kg), and triazolam (0.3 mg/kg) similarly caused an approximately 2-fold prolongation of the thiopental-induced anest

Nutrition and dietary supplements.

Quality and number of subjects in blinded controlled clinical trials about the nutrition and dietary supplements discussed here is variable. Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate have sufficient controlled trials to warrant their use in osteoarthritis, having less side effects than currently used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and are the only treatment shown to prevent progression of the disease. Dietary supplements of ephedrine plus caffeine for weight loss (weight loss being the current first line recommendation of physicians for osteoporosis) show some promise, but are not suf
