Mushroom poisoning and subsequently the number of patients visiting emergency rooms are increasing, as well as the proportion of fatal mushroom poisonings. Myocytic mushroom poisoning is one of the new clinical classifications. This report documents the course of a family with Russula subnigricans poisoning complicated by severe rhabdomyolysis, including a case that was misdiagnosed as myocardial infarction. A 64-y-old man visited our hospital with symptoms including substernal chest discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and myalgia, lasting for 12 h. His laboratory tests showed elevated serum high-se

UNLABELLED: A case of acute cholecystitis following giant puffball mushroom ingestion is described. A 64-year-old male ingested what was presumed to be a puffball mushroom, developed epigastric pain several hours later, and went to the emergency department. Patient blood work yielded elevated liver enzymes and bilirubin levels, with no change in coagulation studies. A mycologist associated with our regional poison center confirmed the mushroom to be a giant puffball mushroom which is recognized as a non-poisonous mushroom. After identification of the mushroom and recognition that it was unlike

Mushrooms are ubiquitous in nature. They are an important source of nutrition, however, certain varieties contain chemicals that can be highly toxic to humans. Industrially cultivated mushrooms are historically very safe, whereas foraging for mushrooms or accidental ingestion of mushrooms in the environment can result in serious illness and death. The emergency department is the most common site of presentation for patients suffering from acute mushroom poisoning. Although recognition can be facilitated by identification of a characteristic toxidrome, the presenting manifestations can be varia

Amanita mushroom poisoning is a serious occurrence. Physicians need to recognize the syndrome promptly and institute effective treatment as soon as possible in order to avoid the often fatal complications. We report a case of a young man with mushroom poisoning of the genus Amanita with a clinical spectrum that ranged from hepatic failure and coagulation disorders to an outcome with a partial recovery. The aim of this report was to emphasize the clinical outcomes and treatment regimens in this type of mushroom poisoning seen with increasing frequency in our region.

RATIONALE: Acute liver failure (ALF) induced by amatoxin-containing mushrooms accounts for more than 90% of deaths in patients suffering from mushroom poisoning. However, due to the fact that most hospitals cannot identify the species of mushrooms involved, or detect amatoxins, the early diagnosis of amatoxin intoxication remains a significant challenge in clinical practice.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Two patients were had ingested wild mushrooms 15 hours before admission. Six hours prior to admission they experienced nausea, vomiting, weakness, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The species of mushrooms th

Wild mushroom poisoning is an emerging global food safety issue, especially in subtropical regions like southwestern China, where incidents are geographically clustered. Current detection methods are often time-consuming and overlook region-specific toxins. We developed a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method for the simultaneous detection of ten characteristic mushroom toxins prevalent in Guizhou, China. The method combines graphite multi-walled carbon nanotubes (G-MWCNTs) for sample preparation with Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Wild mushroom samples were extracted via u

Wild mushroom grow abundantly in the tropical belts of India, and they form part of the diet among the ethnic tribes. However, wild mushrooms are toxic, and some cause organ failure, namely fulminant hepatitis and kidney injury. Mushroom poisoning is frequently diagnosed based on clinical suspicion, and death has been reported commonly because of the consumption of amatoxin-containing mushrooms. In this article, we discuss three cases of amatoxin-induced mushroom poisoning that resulted in acute kidney and liver failure, requiring intensive medical management and renal replacement therapy. Amanita phalloides is responsible for the majority of the fatalities caused by mushroom poisoning. It causes damage in liver, kidneys and rarely pancreas, causing encephalopathic coma, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hemorrhage and hypovolemic shock. However, its effect on cardiac functions has not been established yet. In this case report, we aimed to present a female patient poisoned by A. phalloides mushroom complicated with multi-organ failure and cardiogenic shock due to advanced left ventricular systolic dysfunction. This case report was the first to show a successful treatment o

Wild mushroom poisoning from the genus Amanita is a medical emergency, with Amanita phalloides being the most common offender. Patients may complain of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or abdominal pain. If not aggressively treated, fulminant hepatic failure may develop within several days of ingestion. In this case report, a patient poisoned with Amanita bisporigera is described, along with the typical clinical presentation, patient outcomes, and treatment options for dealing with an Amanita mushroom poisoning.

Flagellate dermatitis (FD) exhibits a striking clinical appearance similar to whiplash marks. General dermatologists are likely to encounter this clinical appearance as a more localized presentation of phytophotodermatosis. Jellyfish stings may also cause localized linear or FD. Chemotherapeutic agents such as bleomycin, doxorubicin, docetaxel, and trastuzumab are well-recognized causes of a widespread FD and it may more rarely be seen in connective tissue disease such as dermatomyositis or Still disease. In our case, this was a presentation of shiitake mushroom dermatitis.

Amanita proxima is one species of white mushroom which can induce poisonings called in France "proximien" syndrome. The clinical feature of "proximien" syndrome is mainly characterized by early digestive troubles, mild hepatic cytolysis and late renal impairment. A cardiac insult has never been reported in such a circumstance. The authors describe herein two cases of white mushroom poisoning occurred in the Mediterranean French coast with a typical clinical feature of "proximien" syndrome plus secondary development of severe cardiac alterations. The outcome was good for the two patients thanks

Amanita phalloides is the most dangerous, poisonous mushroom species in our climatic conditions. It is the cause of 90-95% of all deaths due to mushroom poisoning, a-Amanitin, a polymerase RNA II inhibitor, is mainly responsible for the Amanita phalloides toxic property. Inhibition of polymerase RNA II functioning in a transcription process is connected with inhibition biosynthesis of structural and enzymatic proteins in cells. A lethal dose of a-amanitin is 0.1 mg/kg b.w. for humans. One of the medical problems in Amanita phalloides poisonings is a relatively prolonged latency period (8-24 h)

The mushroom poisoning of phalloid type is caused by amatoxins, mainly by alpha-amanitine. It is a cytotoxin which acts through an indirect mechanism. It binds irreversibly the nucleolar enzyme, RNA-polymerase II in cells with intensive proteosynthesis (enterocytes in the digestive tract, hepatocytes in the liver and epithelial cells of proximal renal tubules). A tight binding of the toxin with the enzyme blocks the transcription from DNA to m-RNA and thus makes the proteosynthesis impossible. This results in the cell necrosis. Pathophysiology of the phalloid type poisoning is rather complicat

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of certain Cortinarius species may lead to renal failure. In the Netherlands, this type of poisoning has not been previously described.
CASUS: A 58-year-old female presented with headache, vomiting and oliguria, preceded by a few days of burning, painful thirst and malaise. She had acute and irreversible renal failure of unknown cause. History revealed that two days before the onset of her symptoms, she had eaten a ragout prepared with mushrooms that were picked in a forest. A renal biopsy demonstrated interstitial nephritis with proximal tubular necrosis. In the leftove
