Diagnosis of a mixed mycoplasma infection associated with a severe outbreak of bovine pinkeye in young calves.

Mycoplasma bovoculi and Mycoplasma bovis were both isolated from conjunctival swabs taken from young calves showing symptoms consistent with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (pinkeye). No Moraxella spp. or other nonmycoplasma bacteria were isolated in association with this severe clinical outbreak. Based on laboratory tests and clinical observations, the first phase of the disease was likely pneumonic in nature, possibly caused by bovine respiratory syncytial virus and M. bovis. In the subsequent phase of the disease course, infection with both M. bovoculi and M. bovis resulted in ocular

Ophthalmic Manifestations of Mycoplasma-Induced Rash and Mucositis.

PURPOSE: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of pediatric respiratory infections, with a quarter having extrapulmonary complications, most commonly a mucocutaneous eruption involving the ocular surface. A detailed description of the ophthalmic manifestations in Mycoplasma-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) is currently lacking in the scientific literature. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of consecutive cases of MIRM at a tertiary referral children's hospital between October 1 and December 1, 2018, with up to 2 months of follow-up. Main outcomes and measures were demographic i

Rapid evolution of disease resistance is accompanied by functional changes in gene expression in a wild bird.

Wild organisms are under increasing pressure to adapt rapidly to environmental changes. Predicting the impact of these changes on natural populations requires an understanding of the speed with which adaptive phenotypes can arise and spread, as well as of the underlying mechanisms. However, our understanding of these parameters is poor in natural populations. Here we use experimental and molecular approaches to investigate the recent emergence of resistance in eastern populations of North American house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) to Mycoplasma galliseptum (MG), a severe conjunctivitis-caus

Evaluation of cytologic findings in feline conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Cytologic examination of smears prepared from ocular swabs of conjunctiva from cats with conjunctivitis permits identification of the type of inflammation and possibly specific microorganisms. Results of studies of the diagnostic utility of cytology for detection of infectious causes of feline conjunctivitis have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to describe cytologic findings in cats with conjunctivitis and to compare those findings with results of PCR analysis for feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), Chlamydophila felis (C felis), and Mycoplasma felis (M fe

Mycoplasma gallisepticum experimental infection and tissue distribution in chickens, sparrows and pigeons.

The most effective approaches to control the spread of Mycoplasma gallisepticum include strict biosecurity measures, continuous surveillance and eradication of infected flocks. The rapid expansion of the poultry industry worldwide in restricted geographical areas and severe economic losses due to M. gallisepticum outbreaks make it crucial to identify and better control the vectors responsible for the transmission of the disease. In the present study we evaluated the susceptibility of sparrows and pigeons to M. gallisepticum and the tissue distribution of M. gallisepticum in these species as co

Mycoplasma detection and isolation from one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius).

In scientific literature, a small amount of information is found concerning mycoplasmosis in camel species. Mycoplasma (M.) arginini, Acholeplasma (A.) laidlawii, and Acholeplasma oculi have been reported to be isolated from these host species. Serologically positive results have been reported for Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides SC type, Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae, and M. mycoides subsp. capri. The aims of this study were to detect, isolate, and identify mycoplasmas from camels (Camelus dromedarius). Initially, saliva and ear smears plus conjunctival and vaginal secretion

Contrasting epidemic histories reveal pathogen-mediated balancing selection on class II MHC diversity in a wild songbird.

The extent to which pathogens maintain the extraordinary polymorphism at vertebrate Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes via balancing selection has intrigued evolutionary biologists for over half a century, but direct tests remain challenging. Here we examine whether a well-characterized epidemic of Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis resulted in balancing selection on class II MHC in a wild songbird host, the house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus). First, we confirmed the potential for pathogen-mediated balancing selection by experimentally demonstrating that house finches with intermediate to hi

Mycoplasma gallisepticum uses itaconate-associated mitochondrial inhibition to suppress host immunometabolism.

Many pathogens actively suppress early host immune responses to enhance their fitness. Mitochondria function as key regulators of immune activation, yet whether pathogens suppress host immunity by manipulating mitochondrial metabolism in vivo remains largely unknown. During an innate immune response, the metabolite itaconate increases in abundance and acts as an immunomodulator, due to its inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), a key mitochondrial regulator of cellular immunity. We hypothesized that Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), a recently emerged pathogen of wild songbirds, most notabl

Conjunctivitis, rhinitis, and sinusitis in cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) found in association with Mycoplasma sturni infection and cryptosporidiosis.

Fledgling cliff swallows were cared for at a rehabilitation facility when clinical signs of ocular disease, characterized by conjunctivitis, epiphora, and hyperaemia of palpebrae and nictitans, were recognized. Treatment consisted of topical and oral antibiotic therapy and one topical steroid administration. However, one cliff swallow died and three were killed due to poor therapeutic response. Conjunctival swabs were obtained ante-mortem from the three cliff swallows and were submitted for mycoplasma culture and molecular diagnostics. Heads of the three birds were fixed in 10% neutral buffere

Vaccination of cattle with Mycoplasma bovoculi antigens: evidence for field immunity.

Cattle previously exposed to Mycoplasma bovoculi developed a high serum IgG and cellular responses detected by ELISA and lymphocyte blastogenesis respectively, when immunized with three M. bovoculi antigen preparations (two non-ionic detergent extracts and a killed whole organism). Similar responses to the detergent immunogen were observed in colostrum-deprived calves free of M. bovoculi. Following ocular challenge with live M. bovoculi all animals including the control group cleared the organism. However the organism colonized the eyes of the colostrum-deprived calves. These observations indi

[Simultaneous detection by immunofluorescence of several viral infections and Mycoplasma, Chlamydia and Rickettsia burneti infections localized at the level of the conjunctival, nasal and pharyngeal mucosae of patients with recurring chronic keratoconjunctivitis].

A study was conducted of the viral and inframicrobial populations present in the conjunctival, nasal and pharyngeal mucous membranes by immunofluorescence techniques, using a twelve hyperimmune serum kit, in 120 patients with chronic, relapsing keratoconjunctivitis. Qualitative and quantitative differences were noted in the antigen levels in the three investigated mucous membranes. The number of antigens in the conjunctival and nasal epithelial cells was higher than in the pharyngeal ones: 117 and 113 positive IF tests for the first two against 95 for the third. Incidence of each of the indivi

Cytology of normal and inflamed conjunctivas in dogs and cats.

Conjunctival scrapings from normal dogs and cats were compared with conjunctival scrapings from dogs and cats with conjunctivitis. Normal scrapings usually contained sheets of epithelial cells and small numbers of bacteria. Goblet cells were not seen unless the scraping was made from the fornix. In the absence of other signs of ocular disease, an occasional leukocyte was considered normal. The changes in scrapings from inflamed conjunctivas included increased numbers of degenerating epithelial cells, fibrin, inflammatory cells, bacteria, and inclusion bodies.

High virulence is associated with pathogen spreadability in a songbird-bacterial system.

How directly transmitted pathogens benefit from harming hosts is key to understanding virulence evolution. It is recognized that pathogens benefit from high within-host loads, often associated with virulence. However, high virulence may also directly augment spread of a given amount of pathogen, here termed 'spreadability'. We used house finches and the conjunctival pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum to test whether two components of virulence-the severity of conjunctival inflammation and behavioural morbidity produced-predict pathogen spreadability. We applied ultraviolet powder around the con

Infectious causes for feline upper respiratory tract disease--a case-control study.

The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the prevalence of microorganisms in group-living cats with clinical signs of upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), in in-contact cats and in cats in groups without URTD problems. Samples were taken from the ventral conjunctival fornix for analysis of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV), Mycoplasma felis and Chlamydiaceae using a real-time polymerase chain reaction technique. The oropharynx was sampled for bacteriological culture and viral isolation. Specific infectious agents were identified in 11/20 (55%) of the case households, in 7/20 (35%) of
