BACKGROUND: Infantile myofibromatosis is the most common fibrous tumor of infancy. It can involve the skin, muscle, bone, and viscera. This uncommon entity is subdivided into solitary and multicentric forms, with or without visceral involvement.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the imaging characteristics of extracranial myofibromatosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six infants, aged 1 day-1 week, were evaluated by imaging. All six patients had evaluation of one of the masses by US; four patients had CT evaluation of at least one of the masses; and five patients had evaluation by MRI.
RESULTS: The US appea

Perivascular soft tissue tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasms of unclear lineage of differentiation, although most are presumed to originate from or differentiate to pericytes or a modified perivascular cell. Among these, glomus tumor, myopericytoma, and angioleiomyoma share a spectrum of histologic findings and a perivascular growth pattern. In contrast, solitary fibrous tumor was once hypothesized to have pericytic differentiation--although little bona fide evidence of pericytic differentiation exists. Likewise the perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family shares a perivascular

OBJECTIVES: To describe 2 cases of mesenchymal pediatric penile tumors in a 13-year-old boy and an 11-month-old infant. Mesenchymal tumors are rare in the male external genitalia.
METHODS: Two patients, one aged 13 years and one 11 months, presented with painless penile masses at the penoscrotal junction. The evaluation included serial clinical examinations and ultrasonography. Both lesions were surgically excised after increasing in size. Because of malignancy, the first patient underwent wide reexcision of the tumor site.
RESULTS: The pathologic findings of the first case were combined der

Congenital fibrous soft tissue tumors in the eyelids are exceptionally rare, with only seven cases of neonatal myofibromas reported. Myopericytoma, a variant with pericytic differentiation, has not previously been described in neonatal eyelid tumors. This report details a case of a massive congenital myopericytoma in a newborn's lower eyelid. The lesion had a broad area of adhesion to the anterior lamella of the lid. After resection, when the child was 11 days old, the resulting defect was successfully reconstructed with a V-Y type perforator-based flap.

Dermatomyofibroma is a benign and rare proliferation of myofibroblasts and fibroblasts of the skin. Dermatomyofibroma commonly locates at the shoulder and neck of young adults and adolescents. Other frequently affected anatomic sites are upper arms, thigh, chest wall, back, axillary region and abdomen. Herein, we reported a case of dermatomyofibroma occurred in the nasion. The asymptomatic firm nodule and histopathological features were consistent with dermatomyofibroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells expressed vimentin, HHF35 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). The patient was followed

Myopericytomas are rare benign tumors that show a distinctive, concentric perivascular proliferation of oval to spindle-shaped myoid-appearing cells that are predominantly arranged concentrically around thin-walled vascular channels. These lesions are similar in histologic appearance to hemangiopericytomas, myofibromas, and glomus tumors. The myopericytoma is usually found in the distal extremities, but a handful of reports have shown the lesion to be present in the oral cavity. A review of the literature to date shows only 4 other reported cases of myopericytomas occurring in the lips. We des

Definitive diagnosis of infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS) and related kinase-altered spindle cell neoplasms (SCN) requires immunohistochemistry (IHC) or molecular assays that are variable in performance or not widely available. Recent transcriptomic studies identified differential gene expression in IFS with ETV6::NTRK3 fusions, prompting investigation of SOX11 expression pattern by IHC in IFS/IFS-like SCN and morphologic mimics. SOX11 staining (MRQ-58) was performed on 201 spindle cell tumors, including 28 IFS and congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) with ETV6::NTRK3 fusion, 44 IFS/IFS-like SCN w

We report the presentation, workup, and pre/perinatal management of a fetus with a large congenital hemangioma of the face. Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms frequently encountered in neonates and infants. The less common congenital variant develops in utero and can present on prenatal ultrasound with diagnostic uncertainty as well as clinical implications for delivery. The differential diagnosis for these solid vascular masses when located in the head and neck includes myofibroma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, teratoma, and encephalocele. Potential clinical issues relate to size an

We herein describe a case of myopericytoma that proliferated in an unusual fashion. Myopericytoma is described as a group of rare, benign, dermal or subcutaneous tumors that are characterized histologically by a striking, concentric, perivascular proliferation of spindle cells and showing apparent differentiation towards perivascular myoid cells. Myopericytoma forms a morphological continuum with myofibroma/myofibromatosis, glomus tumor and angioleiomyoma. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who demonstrated a recurrent ulcer on an atrophic plaque on her left shin. A histopathological examinat

Vascular tumors are benign neoplasms, which result from proliferating endothelial cells. These lesions present during infancy or childhood, may affect any location, and exhibit postnatal growth. Local complications include bleeding, tissue destruction, and pain whereas systemic sequelae include thrombocytopenia, congestive heart failure, and death. Vascular tumors should be differentiated from vascular malformations, which present at birth, have a quiescent endothelium, and grow in proportion to the child. Together, vascular tumors and malformations comprise the field of vascular anomalies.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor seldom involves the larynx, as only about 50 to 60 cases have been described in the literature. Even though these tumors are often not aggressive, they have the potential for invasion and local recurrence. We describe the case of a 27-year-old man who was admitted to an emergency department with signs of upper airway obstruction secondary to an obstructive mass. Histology identified the mass as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the subglottis. The patient underwent an emergency tracheotomy followed by a partial laryngectomy. During 14 months of follow-

This overview of mesenchymal tumors presenting in the skin and/or subcutis in children brings together the range of neoplasms and hamartomas which are seen in this age-group. It is not surprising from the perspective of the pediatric or general surgical pathologist that vascular anomalies, including true neoplasms and vascular malformations, are the common phenotypic category. Since there is considerable morphologic overlap among these lesions, clinicopathologic correlation may be more important than for many of the other mesenchymal tumors. The skin and subcutis are the most common sites of c

We present a case report of a patient who developed a sinonasal myopericytoma treated by surgical excision through a lateral rhinotomy. Some aggressive features on pre-operative computed tomography scanning and the complexity of recent changes in the histological nomenclature for these tumours led to consideration of adjuvant therapy. The close histological relationship between myopericytoma, myofibromatosis, solitary myofibroma and infantile haemangiopericytoma is discussed. This group of lesions constitute a single morphological spectrum with differentiation towards perivascular myoid cells

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a common but easily misdiagnosed tumor in children.
AIMS: To differentiate pilomatricoma from other common subcutaneous nodules in children.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Misdiagnosed subcutaneous nodules in four children were recorded.
RESULTS: A red mass on a 7-year-old boy's head which had been misdiagnosed pyogenic granuloma was proved to be pilomatricoma. A red mass on an 8-month-old boy's face which had been misdiagnosed infantile hemangioma also turned to be pilomotricoma. A red mass on a 21-month-old girl's breast, which had been misdiagnosed pilomatricoma, was prov

Most injuries to the neonatal brachial plexus occur acutely at birth, and are iatrogenic in origin. However, when weakness is accompanied by atrophy, nontraumatic etiologies should be considered. The differential diagnosis of chronic congenital brachial plexopathy includes cervical bone malformations, humeral osteomyelitis, varicella, and compression from various types of infantile tumors. An illustrative male infant delivered at 37 weeks of gestation with wasted musculature of the left upper arm, ipsilateral Horner's syndrome, and a hemidiaphragm is presented. On further examination, this pat

Plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumor (PAMT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor of the stomach. To date, about 40 cases of PAMT have been reported in the literature. This tumor is not specific in clinical manifestations and microscopically characterized by a plexiform growth pattern. Here, we report the case of an 11-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with PAMT. He had a complaint of right epigastric discomfort with episodic pain, gastroscopy displayed a submucosal bulge at the pylorus, and CT showed a mass in the right abdomen with uneven, delayed enhancement, and a partial gastrectomy re

Within the spectrum of extratesticular mesenchymal tumors in the scrotum and perineum lies cellular angiofibroma, also known as angiomyofibroblastoma-like tumor, a rare lesion originally described to almost exclusively occur in the vulva, perineum, and pelvis of women. We report a case of this tumor, with an adjacent scrotal lipoma, occurring in a 60-year-old male who presented to our department with a firm palpable scrotal mass. To our knowledge, the MRI findings of this entity have yet to be described in the radiological literature. We present the MRI features of cellular angiofibroma that a

Myopericytoma (MPC) is a vascular neoplasm exhibiting differentiation towards perivascular cells. Variable cytoarchitechtural features are visible within MPC, and there is much overlap between MPC, myofibroma and glomus tumours. MPC have a local recurrence rate of 10-20% and malignancy has been described in a few published cases. Previously, superficial parotidectomy has been recommended for MPC but, in this case, the surgical approach was via extracapsular dissection (ECD). A 66-year-old Caucasian man presented with a palpable mass arising from the superficial lobe of the right parotid gland.

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor of soft tissue (PHAT) is a rare, low-grade neoplasm of uncertain lineage that predominantly affects the lower limbs of middle-aged adults. We report the case of a male in his early 20s who presented with a progressively enlarging, mildly tender mass above the right knee, present for 6 years. Imaging studies revealed a well-circumscribed lesion with obvious contrast enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging and marked internal vascularity on color Doppler ultrasound, located anterior to the distal quadriceps femoris. Extended excision was performed, and
