Exercise therapy has been indicated for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), but few reports are available about the effect of orofacial myofunctional therapy, which includes working with stomatognathic functions, in patients with TMD. A 49-year-old man with a diagnosis of TMD-hypermobility and orofacial myofunctional disorders received combined treatment with orofacial myofunctional therapy and an occlusal splint. Clinical evaluation and the scale of symptom severity after 9 treatment sessions and during follow-up compared to the phase before treatment suggested that treatment

Maxillary LeFort impaction surgery can lead to improvements in facial proportions, smile esthetics, and improved function for patients with long lower facial height and anterior open bite. Sometimes, because of patient wishes, corrective jaw surgery might not be the most appropriate choice for treatment. This report describes the orthodontic retreatment of a 25-year-old woman with a history of 2 orthodontic treatments and 1 corrective jaw surgery, each with anterior open bite relapse. This third orthodontic treatment plan addressed her chief concern and focused on maximizing esthetics, functio

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is characterized by repetitive narrowing and collapse of pharyngeal airway during sleep, leading to apnoea or hypopnoea. In this context, myofunctional therapy and myofascial release might be effective, despite the literature on the combination of these approaches is still scarce.
OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the efficacy of oro-facial myofunctional therapy combined with myofascial release in terms of functioning in patients with mild OSA.
METHODS: Patients aged from 40 to 80 years with diagnosis of mild OSA were rand

BACKGROUND: Oral myofunctional therapy (MFT) is an effective treatment for mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in middle-aged patients. However, few reports have described its use in elderly patients with moderate and severe OSA. Moreover, no studies have examined the relationship between changes in tongue pressure with MFT and the severity of OSA.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted an interventional study using MFT to evaluate the effect of MFT on middle-to-senior-aged patients with moderate or severe OSA and compared changes in apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) and tongue pressure.
METHODS: Thi

BACKGROUND: Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), a subtype of oral motor therapy, applies neuromuscular re-education techniques to address orofacial myofunctional disorders impacting breathing, sleeping, speaking, eating and swallowing due to atypical orofacial muscle function and structural anomalies. OMT is delivered by licensed professionals within their scope of practice. While some forms of oral motor therapy are passive and can be applied at any age, OMT is volitional and appropriate generally for children four and above.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate th

BACKGROUND: Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) are a valid alternative for patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who do not tolerate continuous positive airway pressure. Despite their efficacy, both adherence and long-term results remain a challenge. Myofunctional therapy (MT) has shown potential to improve upper airway muscle tone and reduce OSA severity, but its role as an adjunct to MAD treatment is still unclear. This protocol evaluates whether app-based MT (Airway Gym) can improve adherence and clinical outcomes in patients with moderate OSA treated with MADs. We describ

Two-piece mandibular advancement devices (MAD) are considered more comfortable than monoblock devices, and they are commonly used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, they are not without limitations, especially in patients with nasal obstruction/malocclusion. Here, we discuss the case of a 37-year-old woman with mandibular regression and severe OSA, for whom a standard twopiece MAD was not adequetely effective. However, her sleep apnea improved with concurrent treatment with lip-muscle training (orofacial myofunctional therapy, OMFT) and a two-piece oral appliance (OA)
