Indications for myringoplasty are chronic otorrhoea and hearing impairment. Some authors have described poor postoperative hearing results and sensorineural hearing loss associated with the surgery, and question the indication for myringoplasty on an ear with normal hearing (< 25 dB). This study of 211 consecutive myringoplasties performed over 1 year details the 'take rate,' hearing gains and losses, and factors found to influence the above. The take rate of 78% is comparable with figures in the literature. The most significant factors influencing this are the grade of the surgeon and the siz

It has been made a review of 238 myringoplasties done in the last three years (1988-90) at the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital. In this work are only contemplated the plain myringoplasties. Tympanoplasties because cholesteatoma and ossiculoplasties are excluded. Some characteristics are studied: age, sex, ear state, kind of perforation, ossicular chain state and others. Anatomical and functional results are analyzed as also the relationship between the type of perforation with the audiometric loose and anatomic success.

Fifty-nine type 1 tympanoplasties in children under 14 years of age were assessed by recall to a special follow-up clinic up to 15 years post-operatively. Overall 78 per cent of tympanic membranes were found to be intact with a late failure of grafts noted in 6 per cent of cases. An improvement in the audiological threshold was found in 51 per cent, 24 per cent were unchanged, the remaining 25 per cent suffered a deterioration which was seen both immediately post-operatively and thereafter until reviewed in the special clinic. The age at operation, size of the perforation, grade of surgeon car

Perforation of the tympanic membrane is a common war injury, especially after explosions. Such perforations will normally heal spontaneously under favourable conditions. A small number in whom the defect persists will benefit from closure by myringoplasty. Thirty-four such cases underwent operative repair and were compared with an equal number due to other causes.

In 387 ears the late results, 3--15 years after myringoplasty with fascia, were analyzed on the basis of the character and localization of the perforation. 8.3% had recurrent perforations 0.5--2 years after operation, of which 2.8% were closed at reoperation. However, perforation recurred in 3.4% of other ears so that, at the last reexamination, the total recurrence of perforation amounted to 8.8%. Most of these were small, localized anteriorly or inferiorly. There were no differences in the frequency of the recurrent perforations related to the character of the preoperative perforation. The h

PURPOSE: Nowadays, the use of otoendoscopy is becoming increasingly popular in ear surgery. Data on endoscopic tympanoplasty are quite current but not yet sufficient. This study aims to present the anatomical and functional results of endoscopic butterfly inlay myringoplasty in large perforations.
METHODS: The graft success rates and audiological outcomes of 26 ears of 23 patients who underwent endoscopic cartilage inlay myringoplasty due to large perforation (more than two-thirds of the area of tympanic membrane) from March 2016 to August 2018 were evaluated.
RESULTS: The mean follow-up per

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether closure of a tympanic membrane perforation with an intact ossicular chain results in a closure of the air-bone gap.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospectively collected data from 154 patients undergoing temporalis fascia myringoplasty for chronic otitis media simplex were identified.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Between 2001 and 2009, overall, 106 patients with a central tympanic membrane perforation and, an intact ossicular chain were further analyzed.

A retrospective study was performed on patients who underwent myringoplasty using an autologous subcutaneous soft tissue graft over a 5-year period. Details including age, site and size of perforation, grade of surgeon, surgical approach, postoperative dressings, overnight stay, complications and outcome were recorded and analysed. Fifty-two patients underwent myringoplasty using a subcutaneous soft tissue graft. Their ages ranged from 4 to 78 years (median = 36 years). The mean follow-up period was 19 months. Successful closure to give an intact tympanic membrane was obtained in 82.7% of pati

OBJECTIVE: Otological surgery requires exceptional precision and advanced surgical skills, particularly for procedures involving the tympanic membrane and middle ear structures. Microsurgical robotic systems have shown promise in enhancing surgical accuracy by minimizing tissue trauma and enabling remote operations. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a microsurgical telerobotic system for performing myringoplasty using an animal model.
METHODS: This feasibility study was conducted with five rabbits (10 ears). Two surgeons performed myringoplasty using a microsurgical ro

PURPOSE: Retrospective evaluation of bilateral same-day myringoplasty outcomes.
METHODS: Patients who underwent bilateral same-day myringoplasty from 2005 to 2019.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients underwent bilateral myringoplasty. Mean age was 44.5 years and 55.3% patients were male. Tragal perichondrium-cartilage composite graft was the most frequently used graft material (82.9%). Perforation closure was achieved in 78.9%. Postoperative Pure Tone Average and Air-Bone Gap decreased significantly (p < 0.05), except for the Air-Bone Gap of the right ear (p = 0.058). The complications were chole

OBJECTIVE: Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is a common cause of visits to the otolaryngology clinic. For decades, various surgical methods and various grafts have been used to treat TMP. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of butterfly dermal allograft (BDA) and fat myringoplasty for the treatment of TMP.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case-control study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 40 patients who underwent BDA (n = 20) and fat myringoplasty (n = 20) for TMP performed by a single surgeon between January 2019 and December 2021. The hearing

BACKGROUND: Myringoplasty can be technically difficult in the pediatric patients due to the narrowness of the external auditory canal and the generally small size of the ear. Moreover, temporalis fascia grafts and myringoplasties for anterior perforations are more likely to fail in children. Surgical management of anterior perforations requires total exposure of the anterior angle however a microscope may fail to provide a view of the anterior edge in most of perforations. Recently, different endoscopes are used in the performance of ear surgery in general and myringoplasty in particular. Curr

The objectives of this study were to ascertain the feasibility of transcanal endoscopic underlay myringoplasty using temporalis fascia and compare the results with microscopic myringoplasty. This prospective randomized trial included 60 patients with mucosal chronic otitis media with tympanic membrane perforations of all sizes and locations apart from posteriorly based small or moderate sized perforations. In the endoscopy group, 30 patients underwent exclusive transcanal myringoplasty using tympanomeatal flap elevation with underlay graft placement. In the microscopy group, 30 patients underw

Age, size, and site of perforation, condition of the ear, status of the contralateral ear, grafting materials, and more are considered factors influencing the success rates in myringoplasties in children. The ambivalence in results is mainly due to nonhomogeneous patient groups. In an effort to compose groups as homogeneous as possible for analysis of influencing factors, a retrospective study of 51 pediatric myringoplasty cases (51 ears) was undertaken. All patients had perforations caused by simple chronic otitis media. The overall surgical success rate was 82.3% at 18 months, and for young
