Sita's Trousseau: restorative justice, domestic violence, and South Asian culture.

This article focuses on the particular cultural factors that affect South Asian women who are abused and immigrant South Asian women who are abused, in particular, in the restorative justice process. By exploring cultural practices and the icon of Sita, the mythological heroine of the Ramayana, this article demonstrates how the South Asian ideals of womanhood and wifehood help to create a mind-set whereby South Asian women are reluctant to advocate for themselves and are reluctant to leave. Such a condition is contrary to the conditions and abilities assumed by the restorative justice movement

[Sacer ignis, quam pustulam vocant pastores: anthrax--cultural historical traces of a zoonosis].

The knowledge of anthrax as a disease and its importance as a zoonosis in the Greco-Roman world is revealed through a selection of classical texts and mythological sources, taking into account evidence of reworking and reuse of these texts up until the nineteenth century. The numerous names given to the disease throughout history and their linguistic origins will also be examined in this paper. The narrative of the epizoonoses in Noricum in Virgil's Georgics; taken by several to represent a description of an anthrax epidemic, and which had a great influence in written works on veterinary medic

Teething myths in Nigerian rural Yoruba communities.

Systemic and local disturbances have often been attributed to the eruption of human primary dentition. Several orthodox and folk remedies exist in some populations to prevent and treat these symptoms blamed on teething. The inherent danger in the persistence of teething myths is the danger that signs and symptoms of some diseases and conditions may be ignored if they are viewed as being merely a part of the teething process. Such behaviour could sometimes be detrimental to the child's health. This study investigated the knowledge and beliefs of two rural Yoruba communities about teething. 58%

'A tall and broad fellow with a very graceful, military personality': Punjabi Sikh men, military service and belonging in Southall 1947-67.

In the 1950s, Southall became home to a Punjabi Sikh community, largely due to Sikh men arriving for work in local factories. Their migration from Punjab followed the Partition of India and Pakistan. In Southall, these men faced significant hostility, often framed in exclusionary and racialized terms tied to the Second World War, to define who belonged in post-war Britain. A local mythology developed around the first employer to hire Punjabi men in the area: Woolfe's Rubber Factory. This article argues that Sikh male identity in Southall drew on their military service to link their imperial pa

What makes Hephaestus lame?

Hephaestus (or Hephaistos) is an Olympian Greek god, the divine smith, famed for inventions, who taught men glorious crafts. The fixed epithet for Hephaestus, used from the eighth century B.C. by Homer, Hesiod, and other ancient authors until the fifth century A.D., is "Amphiguéeis," i.e., with both feet crooked. He is also called "Kullopodíou," i.e., clubfooted. His body and his gait were described by Homer: "He spake, and from the anvil rose, a huge, panting bulk, halting the while, but beneath him his slender legs moved nimbly ... and with a sponge wiped his face and his two hands withal, a

The molecular genetics of holoprosencephaly.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) has captivated the imagination of Man for millennia because its most extreme manifestation, the single-eyed cyclopic newborn infant, brings to mind the fantastical creature Cyclops from Greek mythology. Attempting to understand this common malformation of the forebrain in modern medical terms requires a systematic synthesis of genetic, cytogenetic, and environmental information typical for studies of a complex disorder. However, even with the advances in our understanding of HPE in recent years, there are significant obstacles remaining to fully understand its heterogen

[The use of opium in Roman society and the dependence of Princeps Marcus Aurelius].

Opium was known and frequently used in Roman society. Medical practice recognized its usefulness as an analgesic, soporific, anti-tussic or anti-diarrheic agent, as well as other currently unsupported uses with quasi-magical properties. It was additionally used as an ingredient in antidotes, panaceas and poisons. The authors present a non-exhaustive compilation of opium use according to medical doctors, writers and encyclopaedists of the time. Mythological and literary representations of the opium poppy reflected its diverse roles, being associated with prosperity and fertility, sleep, death a

Harvey, by Hercules! The hero of the blood's circulation.

This article continues the analyses in Medical History 52 (2008), 73-90, 365-86 of William Harvey's self-understanding as the philosopher and discoverer of the blood's circulation. Harvey brilliantly and subversively assumed the persona of the mythological Hercules to embody his own anatomical labour in De motu cordis et sanguinis (1628). He reprised the role in self-defence against accusations in the College of Physicians, London, of his breach of faith with medical tradition. Harvey sought to usurp the medical epithet 'a second Hercules' by reforming humanist dependence on ancient texts as a

An In-Depth Look at the Reactivity of Non-Redox-Metal Alkylperoxides.

Over the past 150 years, a certain mythology has arisen around the mechanistic pathways of the oxygenation of organometallics with non-redox-active metal centers as well as the character of products formed. Notably, there is a widespread perception that the formation of commonly encountered metal alkoxide species results from the auto-oxidation reaction, in which a parent metal alkyl compound is oxidized by the metal alkylperoxide via oxygen transfer reaction. Now, harnessing a well-defined zinc ethylperoxide incorporating a β-diketiminate ligand, the investigated alkylperoxide compounds do no

Nonspecific side effects of oral contraceptives: nocebo or noise?

Side effects of combined oral contraceptives are the most common reason why women discontinue them. Over the past half century, an elaborate mythology about these ill effects has evolved, fueled by rumor, gossip and poor-quality research. In contrast, placebo-controlled randomized trials document that nonspecific side effects are not significantly more common with combined oral contraceptives than with inert pills. These reported nonspecific side effects may reflect the nocebo phenomenon (the inverse of a placebo): if women are told to expect noxious side effects, these complaints occur becaus

[Oculocutaneous albinism: clinical, historical and anthropological aspects].

Albinism represents a group of inherited abnormalities of the melanin pigment system in which the synthesis of melanin is absent or reduced, generalized (oculocutaneous albinism) or localised (ocular albinism). Recent molecular studies provide insight into the pathophysiological processes of pigmentation regulation and help our understanding of the genetic heterogeneity of human albinism. It rarely affects Europeans, frequently Africans, only a minority of Amerindians, who nevertheless, when an ethnic group is concerned, presents one of the highest incidence in the world. Historically, the Afr

Amphiaraos, the Healer and Protector of Attika.

Amphiaraos was an important and popular healing hero/god in Athens from the end of the fifth century BC, however, not much has been studied. This paper investigates the figure in various ways by examining different sources. In the sixth century BC and in to the fifth, Amphiaraos was an Argive warrior hero that came into war against Thebes. He then seems to have acquired a sanctuary in the Theban territory being a mantic hero. In the end of the fifth century BC, however, he is said to have swallowed up by the earth and sprang up again in a spring at Oropos. Between 420-414 BC, his sanctuary was

[Eponyms in musculoskeletal radiology: stories of bones, persons, and civilizations].

Eponyms reflect the history of medicine, of disease, and of physicians, but eponyms also reflect the history of the societies in which these physicians lived. Both loved and hated, eponyms are at the center of an interminable debate about whether they should continue to be used or whether they should disappear, and this debate has become more intense since some scientific societies have purged their terminologies of eponyms related to Nazism. Eponyms abound in conventional musculoskeletal radiology. In this article, rather than attempt an exhaustive review of all these eponyms, we take a few r

Medical practice in the ancient Asclepeion in Kos island.

Asclepius was called "a great doctor for every disease". Asclepius was born in Trikala, Thessaly, in the middle of Greece, where the first Asclepeion was established. Patients coming to the Asclepeia were first taking cleaning baths and then entered the main Asclepeion, where they were examined by priests-therapists and were accommodated in certain areas-rooms of the Asclepeion. Inscriptions found in marble plaques describe treatment of some diseases and the sum of money paid for every treatment. These were the first medical records and fees in ancient Greece. Patients were considered as a uni

The relationship of radiocontrast, iodine, and seafood allergies: a medical myth exposed.

BACKGROUND: Radiocontrast agents are some of the most commonly used medications in the emergency department. However, both physicians and patients misunderstand the role that allergies play in reactions to radiocontrast media, especially with regards to shellfish and iodine. OBJECTIVES: We sought to review the literature describing rates of contrast reactions and risk of contrast administration to patients with iodine allergy, shellfish or seafood allergies, or prior reactions to intravenous iodinated contrast. METHOD: Both authors independently performed literature reviews, including positi

[Aromatic trees and herbs that connect Heaven and earth].

It has been known for a long time that aromatic substances (essential oils) contained in plants often exert psychological effects ranging from sedative to excitatory actions. Medicinal effects have also been confirmed through numerous experiences. In ancient times, aromatic trees and herbs were offered to deities, mostly as incenses that were believed to carry people's wishes, such as requests to cure sick people, to Heaven. In the medieval periods, their deep and subtle aromas elevated aromatics to so-called "treasures of the world," while their various medicinal activities including the psyc
