Chitosan performance during Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST) depuration of Mytilus chilensis exposed to Alexandrium catenella.

Blooms of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST), generate serious socio-economic consequences for mariculture in Chile, especially for the production of Mytilus chilensis and other bivalves. Palliative strategies, such as the depuration of mussels in enriched water with chitosan offer encouraging prospects against the advance of contaminated areas and toxin persistence. Adult mussels were fed with A. catenella for 20 days and then were allowed to depurate using chitosan as facilitator, for the same period. Intoxicated mussels showed a reducti

First Report of Zoonotic Genotype of Giardia duodenalis in Mussels (Mytilus edulis) from Patagonia Argentina.

Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are among the most consumed fishery products globally. Foodborne outbreaks of mussel-associated infections by viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens have been reported in the last years. In this study, we investigated the occurrence, genetic diversity, and zoonotic potential of the diarrhea-causing enteric protozoan Giardia duodenalis in blue mussels from Caleta Córdova in Chubut Province, southeast Patagonia, Argentina. A total of 344 free-living blue mussels were collected and distributed in 53 aliquots of pooled mussel tissue (each containing 5‒7 specimens)

Influence of Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) metacercariae on heart rate in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Whether metacercariae of the digenean Himasthla elongata (Himasthlidae) are harmful to their secondary intermediate hosts, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a disputable question. To shed light on this issue, we performed field monitoring of the heart rate (HR) in mussels infected with H. elongata over a period of 1.5 years. We observed a significant rise in HR in infected mussels, but only 1 year after infection and at temperatures of 15-17 °C. HR variance also grew sharply in infected mussels within the same temperature range. We also detected a decreased ability of infected mussels to com

Uptake of mercury species by transplanted mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis under estuarine conditions (Krka river estuary).

Biometric features and physico-chemical conditions are responsible for many of the variables for metal concentrations in indigenous populations of mussels. In order to reduce variations and promote the utility of mussels as bioindicator organisms for environmental mercury concentration levels, individuals of approximately uniform biometric characteristics, selected from a culture of 1-year-old mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lmk., were transplanted to four locations in the Krka river estuary and nearby coastal area (Eastern Adriatic coast). Biometric parameters of mussels and their total a

Tissue-specific histopathological and oxidative stress responses of Mytilus galloprovincialis to ammonia-based caramel colourants.

The extensive use of caramel colourants in processed foods has led to increasing production volumes, yet information regarding their biological effects in aquatic organisms remains limited. While safety assessments have largely focused on dietary exposure, comparative data on ammonia-based caramel classes under waterborne conditions are scarce. The present study investigated the acute effects of Ammonia Caramel (Caramel III) and Sulfite-Ammonia Caramel (Caramel IV) in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, a widely used marine sentinel species. Mussels were exposed for 96 h to 0.0

Differential sensitivity of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to aged polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastic particles.

Bivalve hemocytes, particularly granulocytes and hyalinocytes, play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity. However, their interactions with aged plastic particles, exhibiting altered properties that more closely resemble those in natural environments, remain largely underexplored. This study assesses the differential responses of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to chemically aged polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic (MPs) and nanoplastic (NPs) particles across multiple cellular effect endpoints. Particle characteristics were analyzed using Single Particle Extinction and Sc

Toxic effect of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to Ag-TiO2 and ZnTi2O4-TiO2 bicomponent nanoparticles.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in various fields, including antifouling paints for ships and industrial structures submerged in water. The potential impact of NPs on aquatic organisms, particularly their potential toxicity, is a significant concern, as their negative impact has been relatively poorly studied. In this study, we evaluated the effect of different concentrations of bimetallic Ag-TiO₂ and ZnTi₂O₄-TiO₂ NPs, which could potentially be used in antifouling coatings, on the hemocytes of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Hemocytes were exposed to NPs at concentrati

Dual transcriptomics reveals co-evolutionary mechanisms of intestinal parasite infections in blue mussels Mytilus edulis.

On theoretical grounds, antagonistic co-evolution between hosts and their parasites should be a widespread phenomenon but only received little empirical support so far. Consequently, the underlying molecular mechanisms and evolutionary steps remain elusive, especially in nonmodel systems. Here, we utilized the natural history of invasive parasites to document the molecular underpinnings of co-evolutionary trajectories. We applied a dual-species transcriptomics approach to experimental cross-infections of blue mussel Mytilus edulis hosts and their invasive parasitic copepods Mytilicola intestin

Mercury(II) Binding to Metallothionein in Mytilus edulis revealed by High Energy-Resolution XANES Spectroscopy.

Of all divalent metals, mercury (HgII ) has the highest affinity for metallothioneins. HgII is considered to be enclosed in the α and β domains as tetrahedral α-type Hg4 Cys11-12 and β-type Hg3 Cys9 clusters similar to CdII and ZnII . However, neither the four-fold coordination of Hg nor the existence of Hg-Hg atomic pairs have ever been demonstrated, and the HgII partitioning among the two protein domains is unknown. Using high energy-resolution XANES spectroscopy, MP2 geometry optimization, and biochemical analysis, evidence for the coexistence of two-coordinate Hg-thiolate complex and four-

A procedure for large-scale purification of domoic acid from toxic blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Pure domoic acid is required for use in research to investigate the biological effects of this new shellfish toxin. It may also prove to be a useful tool in studies exploring the basis of Alzheimer's disease. In this paper we describe a procedure which is effective in obtaining adequate quantities of pure domoic acid from blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The procedure involves tissue homogenization, treatment of homogenate with chloroform and methanol, and separation of different phases with the addition of water. The aqueous-methanolic phase (upper layer) contains water soluble components includ

Polylactic Acid Bioplastics (PLA BPs): A Threat to the Reproductive Health of the Mediterranean Mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

In the context of the global transition towards a more sustainable economy, the use of bioplastics (BPs) is rapidly increasing across several sectors, including industry, medicine and cosmetics. Among BPs, polylactic acid (PLA) is the "polymer of the 21st century". Because of its wide use and slow degradation capacity, it can be found in various aquatic matrices, causing potential health concerns for biota. This work evaluated the influence of environmental concentrations (0.5 µg/mL) of PLA BPs on the reproductive health of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, following a short-

Massive expansion of Hsp70 family genes in the mussel Mytilus coruscus reveals their adaptability to dynamic environments.

Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is a highly conserved molecular chaperone that plays crucial roles in combating both biotic and abiotic stressors. Herein, a total of 97 Hsp70 genes distributed across nine sub-families were identified in Mytilus coruscus. Noticeable gene expansion was detected in three subfamilies, including 77 genes in Hspa12, 4 in Hspa5, and 10 in Hsp70B2. In total, 94 Mco-Hsp70 genes were unequally mapped across 12 chromosomes, with the largest gene number present on chromosome 03 (37 genes, 38.14%). Subcellular localization analysis indicated that 74 (76.3%) Hsp70s were local

A Comparative Analysis of Physiological and Morphological Alteration in Mytilus galloprovincialis After Exposure to Polyethylene Glycol (PEG).

This study investigates the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on Mytilus galloprovincialis, a key sentinel species in marine environments. As PEGs are widely used in personal care products and pharmaceuticals, their increasing presence in marine ecosystems poses a potential threat to non-target organisms. A total of 150 mussels were exposed to different concentrations of PEG (0.1 mg/L and 10 mg/L) over 14 days. The impact of PEG exposure was assessed through cell viability assays, regulatory volume decrease (RVD) tests, and histological analysis, respectively, on hemolymph and digestive gla

Effects of exposure to nanoplastics on the gill of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis: An integrated perspective from multiple biomarkers.

The pervasive presence of nanoplastics (NPs) in marine environments poses a threat to marine organisms. Gills, as the organ in direct contact with the environment in marine invertebrates, maybe the first to accumulate NPs. To date, the toxic effects of NPs on the gills of marine invertebrates are still largely unknown. In this study, the response of multiple biomarkers (i.e., total antioxidant capacity, the activity of acetylcholine, ion content and transport enzyme, metabolic enzymes, and lipids content) in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) for 7 d

Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)-A bioindicator of marine water contamination by protozoa: Laboratory and in situ approaches.

AIMS: The protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Toxoplasma gondii are identified as public health priorities and are present in a wide variety of environments including the marine ecosystem. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that the marine bivalve blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) can be used as a tool to monitor the contamination of marine waters by the three protozoa over time. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to achieve a proof of concept, mussels were exposed to three concentrations of G. duodenalis cysts and Cryptosporidium parvum/T. gondii oocysts for 21

Buried Alive: The Behavioural Response of the Mussels, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis to Sudden Burial by Sediment.

Sedimentation in the sea occurs through natural processes, such as wave and tidal action, which can be exacerbated during storms and floods. Changes in terrestrial land use, marine aggregate extraction, dredging, drilling and mining are known to result in substantial sediment deposition. Research suggests that deposition will also occur due to the modern development of marine renewable energy. The response to individual burial under three depths of sediment, three sediment fractions and five burial durations was investigated in two mussel species, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis in specia

Molecular characterization of an estrogen receptor and estrogen-related receptor and their autoregulatory capabilities in two Mytilus species.

Vertebrate-like sex steroid hormones have been widely detected in mollusks, and numerous experiments have shown the importance of steroids in gonad development. Nevertheless, their signaling pathways in invertebrates have not been uncovered yet. Steroid receptors are an ancient class of transcription factors with multiple roles in not only vertebrates but also invertebrates. Estrogen signaling is thought to have major roles in mollusk physiology, but the full repertoire of estrogen receptors is unknown. We presented the successful cloning of two novel forms of estrogen receptor-like genes. The

Adaptive evolution of M3 lysin--a candidate gamete recognition protein in the Mytilus edulis species complex.

Marine invertebrate gamete recognition proteins (GRPs) are classic examples of rapid adaptive evolution of reproductive proteins, and hybridizing Mytilus blue mussels allow us to study the evolution of GRPs during speciation following secondary contact. Even with frequent hybridization, positive selection drives divergence of M7 lysin, one of the three Mytilus egg vitelline envelope (VE) lysins. Mytilus trossulus and M. edulis form a broad hybrid zone in the Canadian Maritimes and eastern Maine, isolated by strong (but partial) gamete incompatibility. M7 lysin, however, is an unlikely GRP cont

Chemical defence in mussels: antifouling effect of crude extracts of the periostracum of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis.

Shells of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis remain free of fouling organisms as long as they possess an intact periostracum, and a multiple antifouling defence that comprises a ripple-like microtopography and the production of chemical antifouling compounds has been suggested previously. This study investigates the chemical defence strategy of blue mussels for the first time. Six crude extracts of the periostracum of intact shells were made using solvents of increasing polarity. These extracts were tested against common fouling organisms in laboratory based bioassays. Non-polar and moderately pol
