Light and electron microscopic studies on Myxobolus cotti el-Matbouli and Hoffmann, 1987 infecting the central nervous system of the bullhead (Cottus gobio).

Myxobolus cotti (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) is described as found in the central nervous system of the bullhead (Cottus gobio) caught in the Alpine lake Königssee and in a brook in the Bavarian Forest, Federal Republic of Germany (El-Matbouli and Hoffmann 1987). Aggregations of spores and polysporoblastic trophozoites compressed and replaced large areas of the white and grey matter of the brain and spinal cord. These aggregations may be surrounded by a thin, connective tissue capsule; in a few cases they were associated with loose infiltrates of glial cells. Neither conspicuous tissue reactions nor

Histopathological and ultrastructural assessment of two mugilid species infected with myxozoans and helminths.

The histopathology and ultrastructure of the intestine of mullets, Liza ramada and Liza saliens, from Comacchio lagoons (northern Italy) naturally infected with myxozoans and helminths were investigated and described. Sixty-two (80.5%) of 77 mullets harboured one or more of the following parasites species: Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa), Neoechinorhynchus agilis (Acanthocephala), Haplosplanchnus pachysomus and Dicrogaster contractus (Digenea). Co-occurrence of helminths with myxozoans was common. The main damage caused by digeneans was destruction of the mucosal epithelium of the villi, necrosis

Characterization of Henneguya kadeyensis sp. nov. (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) infecting Distichodus mossambicus from Kadey River, Cameroon.

African freshwaters are inhabited by many endemic fishes. However, little is known about the associated myxozoan diversity. The present paper describes a new parasite species of Henneguya Thélohan, 1892 infecting Distichodus mossambicus Peters, 1852, an endemic freshwater fish species commonly found in the Congo Basin. Fish were collected from the Kadey River at Mindourou, a village in the East Region of Cameroon. To study the new Henneguya species, morphological analysis using light microscopy was combined with a phylogenetic analysis of small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) using maximum li

Long-term exposure to low 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) concentrations disrupts both the reproductive and the immune system of juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss.

Estrogenic endocrine disrupting compounds (EEDCs), such as ethinylestradiol (EE2), are well studied for their impact on the reproductive system of fish. EEDCs may also impact the immune system and, as a consequence, the disease susceptibility of fish. It is currently not yet known whether the low concentrations of EEDCs that are able to disrupt the reproductive system of trout are effective in disrupting the immune system and the fish host resistance towards pathogens, too, or whether such immunodisruptive effects would occur only at higher EEDC concentrations. Therefore, in the present study

The impact of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae and Myxobolus cerebralis co-infections on pathology in rainbow trout.

BACKGROUND: Myxozoan parasites pose emerging health issues for wild and farmed salmonid fish. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a particularly susceptible species to Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Malacosporea), the etiological agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD), and to Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxosporea), the etiological agent of Whirling Disease (WD). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of myxozoan co-infections on the pathogenesis of PKD and WD in the rainbow trout. METHODS: Two groups of rainbow trout (96 fish each) were primarily infected with T. bryosal

A NEW MYXIDIUM SPECIES FROM THE LEAST KILLIFISH HETERANDRIA FORMOSA IN LOUISIANA.

In a parasitological survey of the least killifish, Heterandria formosa (Girard), from Ward Creek in Louisiana, we encountered a myxozoan parasite in the gallbladders of this host bearing myxospores consistent with a Myxidium species. Prevalence was 72.2% in 18 hosts examined, with infection characterized by the presence of sheetlike to discoid plasmodia, approximately 1-2 mm across, floating freely in the gallbladder. Myxospores were observed in the plasmodia and found floating freely in the bile and were elliptoid and fusiform in valvular and sutural views respectively. The myxospore poles w

Histopathological evaluation of the infection elicited by three species of Myxobolus (Cnidaria: Myxosporea), with identification of Myxobolusxiaoganensis n. sp. isolated from the silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix.

Several parasites infecting the Asian carp species have been broadly spread along with the global fish trade. However, the diversity of specific parasite groups and their pattern of parasitism remain insufficiently elucidated even in their native regions. Here, we conducted a holistic identification and histological analysis of three Myxobolus species. The oblate myxospores of the first isolates were found infecting the spleen of silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, measuring 6.4 ± 0.4 (5.4-7.1) μm in length, 8.2 ± 0.4 (7.5-9.0) in width, and 5.9 ± 0.3 (5.2-6.2) in thickness. Description of Myxidium pseudocuneiforme n. sp. (Myxosporea: Myxidiidae) from Cyprinus carpio in China, with the resolution on a taxonomic dilemma of Myxidium cuneiforme.

Investigations on myxozoan parasites of fish from Chongqing in China, revealed two Myxidium cuneiforme-like myxosporeans infecting the gallbladder of Cyprinus carpio carpio and Carassius auratus. We researched their myxospore morphology, and analyzed their genetic similarity and phylogenic relationships to other myxozoans based on small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) sequences. Although both parasites recovered were morphologically similar, the myxosporean isolated from C. auratus was consistent in morphology to Myxidium cuneiforme, which was described from this host species. The parasite is
