Detection of anal dysplasia is enhanced by narrow band imaging and acetic acid.

AIM: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia precedes the development of anal squamous cell carcinoma. Detection of the lesion is essential to management. This paper describes a prospective study to detect and ablate anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) using white light narrow band imaging (NBI) and NBI with acetic acid (NBIA). METHOD: Sixty patients with abnormal anal cytology and risk factors for anal dysplasia underwent examination of the anoderm with a high definition gastroscope and NBIA. Targeted biopsies were taken and the lesions were ablated and characterized histopathologically. Vis

Laparoscopic narrow-band imaging for the diagnosis of peritoneal metastasis in gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Staging laparoscopy (SL) is often used to diagnose peritoneal metastasis in patients with advanced gastric cancer, but accurate detection of metastasis can be difficult. We evaluated the usefulness of laparoscopic narrow-band imaging (NBI) versus conventional laparoscopic white-light imaging (WLI) for the diagnosis of peritoneal metastasis. METHODS: We excised 37 white nodules from the parietal peritoneum of 26 patients with gastric cancer and suspected peritoneal metastasis. The WLI and NBI findings were compared with the pathological findings. All the peritoneal lesions examined

Narrow-Band Imaging Improves Detection of Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases: A Clinical Study Comparing Advanced Imaging Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal peritoneal metastases (PM) are often diagnosed in an advanced disease stage. Cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) improve survival of patients with colorectal PM, although most benefit is seen in patients with limited peritoneal disease. Advanced imaging techniques might improve the detection of PM, potentially leading to earlier diagnosis and improved cytoreduction. This prospective clinical trial compared three advanced techniques with conventional white-light imaging for the detection of colorectal PM: narrow-band imaging (NBI), near-inf

Utility of narrow band imaging in a patient with a spinal cord cavernous malformation.

BACKGROUND: Complete removal of the lesion from the spinal cord cavernous malformation is crucial in patients with spinal cord cavernous malformation. Herein, we report that narrow-band imaging (NBI) is useful to confirm the complete removal of spinal cord cavernous malformations. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman was followed up for the past seven years due to multiple intracranial cavernous malformations. She reported abnormal pressure sensation in the right hip. Thoracic MRI revealed an intramedullary lesion at the 6th thoracic vertebra, suggesting hemorrhage from a spinal cord ca

Definition of Mucosal Breaks in the Era of Magnifying Endoscopy with Narrow-Band Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is diagnosed endoscopically based on the presence of mucosal breaks. However, mucosal breaks can be judged differently depending on the endoscopist, even in the same image. We investigated how narrow-band imaging (NBI) and magnified endoscopy affect the judgment of mucosal breaks. METHODS: A total of 43 consecutive patients were enrolled who had suspected mucosal breaks on white-light images (WLI) and underwent nonmagnified NBI (N-NBI) and magnified NBI (M-NBI) by a single endoscopist. From WLI, N-NBI, and M-NBI, 129 image files were created. Eight
