Conclusion Nasal obstruction can aggravate the psychological status of OSA patients, and nasal surgery should reduce this aggravation. Nasal surgery significantly improved sleep latency and ameliorated several polysomnographic characteristics. Background The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological status of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nasal obstruction and to evaluate the effects of nasal surgery on the psychological symptoms and polysomnographic (PSG) parameters of these patients. Methods The study was designed as a prospective comparative study. This study

Background and aim Nasal obstruction is one of the most common reasons for consultation addressed by otolaryngologists. There are anatomical, physiological, and pathological etiologies. Sometimes the treatment can become a challenge for the specialist, so a detailed evaluation of the etiologies must be carried out. The involvement of the nasal vestibular body (NVB) in obstructive symptoms has been described. Therefore, we must be familiar with its anatomy, presentation, and contribution to this symptomatology. This study aimed to highlight the importance of NVB in the role of nasal obstruction

Dorsal nasal gouty tophus are rare occurrences with limited documentation. Here we report a male patient who has a history of poorly controlled gouty arthritis. He had nasal obstruction with an enlarging mass over his left nasal ridge for the past three years. Image studies revealed a nasal bone defect underneath the nasal lesion. The firm mass was excised and confirmed to be of gouty origin. The nasal bone defect was repaired with a titanium mesh plate to prevent nasal depression. He has fully recovered with no more nasal obstruction or recurrence of nasal tophus. The case report illustrates

Patients often present with a complaint of nasal blockage, either primarily, or in conjunction with aesthetic concerns. The evaluation of the patient with nasal obstruction involves a comprehensive history and a detailed physical examination. The nose is an organ in which form and function are inseparable, and as such, examination of the patient with nasal obstruction must focus not only the internal structures that may cause obstruction of the nasal airway, but also the external structure of the nose as it impacts nasal breathing. Detailed facial analysis and a systematic nasal examination wi

: The study aims to discuss a case of an uncommonly sited rare tumour causing nasal obstruction and a literature review of angioleiomyomas in the nose. A 64-year-old woman presented with blockage of the right nostril, associated with a visible swelling on the undersurface of the alar cartilage, in the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. Anterior rhinoscopy highlighted a 1 cm cystic lesion, with areas of firmness, present at the mucocutaneous junction with a broad base. It was not attached to the underlying cartilage. There was no ulceration or bleeding on palpation. Nasal endoscopy did not sho

Congenital nasal obstruction can result in neonatal respiratory distress because neonates are obligate nasal breathers. Therefore, all physicians who deal with infants should be familiar with the structural abnormalities, masses, and syndromes that cause nasal obstruction, so that appropriate work-up and treatment can be promptly initiated. This paper reviews the embryology of the nasal passage and then continues with the different causes of nasal obstruction. Special attention is paid to the presentation, physical exam findings, and imaging modality of choice.

The neonate is a preferential nasal breather; therefore, nasal obstruction in the neonatal period may cause significant sequelae. Although the uncommon choanal atresia is the main condition to be excluded, many other possible causes exist. A systematic approach to the workings of nasal obstruction in the neonate and infant is outlined so that appropriate management can be instituted.

We report two cases of massive invasive pituitary adenoma with the unusual presentation of nasal obstruction. In both cases the diagnosis was only made when the obstructing tissue was removed. Cases reported previously have usually presented with severe focal neurological signs or a long history of neurological symptoms. These two cases are unusual in having minimal neurological deficits despite the extension of tumour into the nasopharynx and the middle and posterior cranial fossae. These extensions were well illustrated by computerised tomography. This unusual presentation is discussed with

The relationship between nasal obstruction and facial growth is controversial. Much of the controversy relates to the lack of sophistication in quantifying nasal versus oral respiration and the lack of longitudinal data. Nevertheless, a number of studies in laboratory animals, nonhuman primates, and humans have shown a relationship between nasal airway obstruction and aberrant facial growth. In monkeys, occlusion of the nares with silicon plugs triggered deviant muscle function and altered morphogenesis. In general, the nasally obstructed animals had longer faces and unusual dental malocclusio

Patients with the sleep apnea syndrome are being increasingly referred to the otolaryngologist as it becomes clear that obstructive lesions in the nose, nasopharynx, and oropharynx can play a part in the pathogenesis of the syndrome. Correction of the obstructive lesion obviates the need to do a tracheotomy, which has been the conventional treatment for severe cases. In this paper we discuss two cases of obstructive sleep apnea, in whom surgical correction of nasal valve area obstruction was successful in abolishing the symptoms.

The case histroy and cinematoradiographic findings of a baby with partial nasal obstruction are presented. This infant's restriction to air entry at the nose led to severe airway obstruction during inspiration by a forward movement of the posterior pharyngeal wall and backward movement of the tongue and lower jaw. At the height of inspiration, there was total airway occlusion in the pharynx. These events can be explained by the pressure drop that takes place behind a restriction if air is sucked through it forcibly from an area of atmospheric pressure. Studies of postpalatal pressures in adult

OBJECTIVE: An often neglected cause of nasal obstruction is maxillary constriction. Maxillary expansion (ME) has been proven to decrease nasal resistance and increase nasal volume and airflow thus improving nasal obstruction symptoms both in adults and children. However, up to the present, studies have reported on patients with an orthodontic indication for ME, but not being treated for nasal obstruction. In this study we report a case series of pediatric patients who have been diagnosed with nasal obstruction attributed to maxillary constriction and who have been treated with ME.
METHODS: Pa

Nasal obstruction is a common symptom and can have a large impact on patient quality of life. There are numerous causes, including anatomic, congenital, inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, toxic, and systemic. An algorithmic approach can aid in ensuring all pertinent patient information is incorporated into the final diagnosis and treatment plan. Key components include a thorough history, physical examination including modified Cottle and Cottle maneuver, patient-reported outcome measures and/or quality of life questionnaires, examination with and without decongestion, and nasal endoscopy. The nasal location of sarcoidosis is rare. In this regard, we report three observations of sarcoidosis observed in three women with an average age of 53.6 years, revealed by annoying nasal manifestations. The presence of extra-nasal sites allowed us to suspect the diagnosis of sarcoidosis in all the patients.

Surgical treatments for nasal airway obstruction (NAO) are commonly offered as part of otolaryngology practice. Anatomic causes include septal deviation, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, and nasal valve collapse (NVC). This study was performed to determine the prevalence of anatomic contributors to NAO. A total of 1,906 patients with sinonasal complaints were surveyed by 50 otolaryngologists in varying U.S. geographic regions. Patients were first evaluated using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) instrument to assess the NAO symptoms and their severity. Physicians then examined pat

In our modern medical practice, rhinoliths are a rare occurrence, but they ought to be considered in the differential diagnosis of a long-standing nasal obstruction. They are known to cause unilateral nasal discharge, facial pain, headache, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. We present two cases that we encountered in our practice, and discuss them with a review of the existing literature.
