Amyloidosis in the nasopharynx and larynx: a case report.

Amyloidosis is a disease caused by amyloid deposition in tissues or organs. According to the extent of the lesion, it can be divided into systemic amyloidosis and localized amyloidosis. Amyloidosis originating in the larynx accounts for approximately 0.5% to 1.0% of benign lesions of the larynx; such lesions are relatively rare and mostly localized. Nasopharyngeal amyloidosis combined with laryngeal amyloidosis is even rarer. We herein present a case involving a patient with amyloidosis in the nasopharynx and larynx who presented with a foreign body sensation and hoarseness in the pharynx. Ele

Oncocytic Cysts of the Nasopharynx: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal oncocytic lesions are a spectrum of benign lesions that represent a reactive or hyperplastic response to chronic inflammation. Though oncocytic lesions are typically asymptomatic, unilateral, and benign, this article discusses a rare case of large, bilateral oncocytic cysts and downstream otologic sequelae with a focus on identifying and discussing similar disease processes. METHODS: Case report and literature review.Case Presentation: A 67-year-old patient with 57 pack year smoking history presented for one year of left sided hearing loss and aural fullness. Clinic

Development of the nasopharynx: A radiological study of children.

The relation between pharyngeal tonsil and the bony nasopharynx determines the nasopharyngeal airway patency. Despite its importance, an anatomical study utilizing advanced imaging has not been conducted. The aim of the study was to evaluate the pharyngeal tonsil and bony nasopharynx depth and their ratio (adenoid-nasopharyngeal ratio [ANR]) with relation to sex and age in the general pediatric population. After excluding reported history of adenoidectomy, acute upper airway illness, allergy, and poor quality, 200 randomly selected head computed tomographies (CTs) of children were evaluated. C

[Observation of the intra-adenoid cysts in the nasopharynx].

The objective of the present study was to demonstrate the clinical significance and possibilities of diagnostics and treatment of the intra-adenoid cysts in the nasopharynx as exemplified by an original observation of an individual case. The cystic structures in the nasopharynx rarely manifest themselves clinically and are known to produce the non-specific symptoms. The patients admitted to the L.I. Sverzhevskiy Research Institute of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology for the surgical treatment of nasopharyngeal cysts account for 0.05% of the total number of the hospitalized subjects. This article r

Primary clear cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx.

A 22-year-old female with epistaxis and nose block had a pink, smooth, mucosa covered lesion occupying the nasopharynx. The histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of clear cell carcinoma (CCC). Detailed evaluation ruled out a primary tumor elsewhere in the body. After complete excision of the tumor patient received radiotherapy (60 Gray in 30 fractions over 6 weeks). Patient is recurrence free on her 3-year follow-up. Primary CCC of the head and neck is rare. In the past 30 years, less than 100 cases have been reported in English literature. Out of these,

FOREIGN BODY IN THE NASOPHARYNX; MASQUERADING AS PHARYNGOTONSILLITIS.

Foreign body (FB) in the aerodigestive tracts has been commonly reported but findings of impacted foreign bodies in the nasopharynx following inhalation/ingestion are very rare. Most of the FB gets lodged as a result of forceful vomiting, coughing, and digital manoeuvres for removal of FB in the oropharynx. Several objects have been identified lodged in the nasopharynx. No age group is spared although most victims are children under 10 years of age. Foreign bodies in the nasopharynx can be uneventful or potentially dangerous depending on type, size and location as it may cause sudden airway obs

Endoscopic surgery for Warthin's tumor of the nasopharynx.

Warthin's tumor almost exclusively occurs in the parotid gland. It is the second most common tumor after the pleomorphic adenoma. The extraparotid or ectopic Warthin's tumor is rare and is normally situated in the submandibular gland, cervical lymph node, lip, cheek, tongue, hard palate, lacrimal gland and larynx. In this paper we present a case of the Warthin's tumor with ectopic localization in the nasopharynx with asymptomatic outcome. A 56-year-old man has been diagnosed for 10-year history of headache. He had no past history of any otolaryngologic disease. The axial and coronal NMR scans

Mesenchymal hamartoma in nasopharynx: a case report.

Hamartoma in the nasopharynx of the children is especially rare. Most documented cases occurred in infants, with characteristic histologic features of a mixture of various mesenchymal tissues. We report a case arising in a 15-year-old male patient, who presented with a 1-month history of right-sided nasal obstruction. The mass was resected endoscopically and confirmed histologically as a lymphoid hamartoma. We report and discuss the pathological features of this rare nasopharyngeal hamartoma.

[Otalgia as presentation of primary nasopharynx tuberculosis].

We report a case of a 63-year-old woman who presented with left otalgia during more than six months. On examination, otoscopy was normal, whereas flexible nasopharyngoscopy revealed an asymmetry in the nasopharynx. CT scans confirmed the presence of a left nasopharyngeal mass. A transnasal endoscopic removal of the nasopharyngeal lesion was performed. Necrotizing granulomatosis was found. Tuberculosis of the nasopharynx was considered the final diagnosis, but oral treatment was not started. After 36 months of follow-up, nasal endoscopy and CT images show no sign of recurrence. Discussion is fo

Arteriovenous malformation of the nasopharynx: a case report.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the head and neck is a rare vascular anomaly but when present is persistent and progressive in nature and can represent itself truly as a lethal benign disease. We present here an unusual case of an AVM with the size of 1.5 cm x 0.8 cm at the adenoid tissue found in an 8-year-old boy, which is not previously reported in the literature where we treated the patient with surgery alone. Although bleeding is a common presentation with vascular malformations, we have not seen any bleeding in our case. After the surgery, paranasal sinus and neck CT were undertaken.

[Minor salivary gland tumors of the nasopharynx].

Minor salivary gland tumors of the nasopharynx are rare. Among them, adenoid cystic carcinoma was most frequently seen. In this paper, 16 cases of minor salivary gland tumor of the nasopharynx admitted to our hospital during the past 27 years are reported. Patients' age ranged from 23 to 74 years with an average of 38.2 years in the women and 45.6 years in the men. Patients with malignant tumor often complained of headache, epistaxis, hearing and sight loss etc. Nasopharyngeal masses were found in all In some cases, paralysis of one or more cranial nerves was demonstrated by neurological exami

Dermoids ('hairy polyps') of the oro-nasopharynx.

Dermoids, or hairy polyps, are rare lesions affecting the head and neck region. To date approximately 120 cases have been recorded. They arise during early embryogenesis and are invariably benign. Unlike the more differentiated types of teratoma, hairy polyps are derived from only two germinal layers, ectoderm and mesoderm. Most originate in the oro-nasopharyngeal region, either as pedunculated or sessile masses. They usually present at, or soon after, birth with signs of upper aerodigestive tract obstruction. Treatment consists of surgical removal. In young children with airway compromise, th
