The effects of natural disasters on leishmaniases frequency: A global systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Natural disasters (NDs) may increase the outbreaks and transmissions of vector-borne diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). However, the relationship between leishmaniases and NDs has not yet been clearly established. Here, we systematically reviewed all reported articles in this field to answer whether NDs increase the frequency of leishmaniases. METHODS: All the related articles published during January 2000 till January 2020 were reviewed. Moreover, all NDs and the associated leishmaniases frequencies reports in 17 leishmaniases endemic c

Violence against children and natural disasters: A systematic review and meta-analysis of quantitative evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Reviews of violence against children in disaster settings focus on armed conflict. Little is understood about natural disasters which has implications in planning humanitarian response. We examined the magnitude and direction of the association between exposure to natural disasters and physical, emotional, and sexual violence against children, and assessed the quality of the evidence. METHODS: We searched 15 health and social science databases from first record until May 16, 2018. Publications describing all types of quantitative study design were eligible for inclusion. We presen

Natural and man-made disasters: the vulnerability of women-headed households and children without families.

Since 1980, over 2 million people have died as an immediate result of natural and man-made disasters and by 1992, the refugee population registered nearly 16 million people. This article reviews the human impact of disasters as a composite of two elements: the catastrophic event itself and the vulnerability of people. It also examines the specific case of women and children in the current world emergency context. It identifies four broad policy areas that affect women and children in disaster situations and discusses them with examples and field evidence. The first policy area addresses humani

Exposure to Multiple Natural Disasters and Externalising and Internalising Behavior: A Longitudinal Study of Adolescents.

PURPOSE: As natural disasters become more frequent and more severe, there is a corresponding need to understand their relationship with child and adolescent mental health, and in particular, to understand exposure to multiple natural disasters. This study assesses the relationship between exposure to both single and multiple disasters and adolescent internalising and externalising behavior. METHODS: The study used five waves of a nationally representative longitudinal Australian dataset. Exposure to sudden-onset (fires, floods, storms) and slow-onset (drought) disasters was collected across f

Reviewing the Impacts of Natural and Technological Disasters on the End-Stage Kidney Disease Community.

The impact and severity of natural disasters and hazards have been increasing in the United States and throughout the world. With our mounting reliance and dependence on technology in our industrialized society, technological disasters also have become more commonplace. Although disasters may occur with little to no warning, these risks are felt to be acceptable despite their ability to impact large populations. Natural and technological disasters disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The impact of natural and technological disa

Natural disasters resulting from climate change: The impact of hurricanes and flooding on perinatal outcomes.

Although the earth's climate has been continuously changing over billions of years, human influence has accelerated that rate of change. While high latitudes suffer the greatest increase in incremental temperature, moderate latitudes are highly vulnerable due to their temperate/tropical rain storms and hurricanes that bring about extreme flooding events. We and others have shown that there is a link between the occurrence and severity of these climate events and risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. In this review, we will discuss the data and consider interacting near and intermediate sequelae

Mental health implications for older adults after natural disasters--a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters affect the health and well-being of adults throughout the world. There is some debate in the literature as to whether older persons have increased risk of mental health outcomes after exposure to natural disasters when compared with younger adults. To date, no systematic review has evaluated this. We aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the impact of natural disasters on the mental health and psychological distress experienced by older adults. DESIGN: A meta-analysis was conducted on papers identified through a systematic review. The primary outcomes mea

How should we screen for depression following a natural disaster? An ROC approach to post-disaster screening in adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: The present study's aim was to provide the foundation for an efficient, empirically based protocol for depression screening following a natural disaster. Utilizing a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analytic approach, the study tested a) what specific disaster-related stressors (i.e., property damage, loss of basic services) and individual-related constructs (i.e., PTSD symptoms, trauma history, social support) conveyed the greatest risk for post-natural disaster depression, b) specific cutoff scores across these measures, and c) whether the significance or cutoff scores for

Reproductive health crisis amidst a natural disaster in Pakistan: A call to action.

In 2022, Pakistan and the South Asian region experienced unprecedented natural disasters. The country was devastated by severe floods caused by unusually high monsoon rains and river overflows. The Pakistani government reported that at least 80 districts nationwide were impacted, leading to the loss of one million homes, over 1000 fatalities, and 1600 injuries. The floods left no one unaffected, but vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and adolescent girls, suffered the most. The United Nations Population Fund estimates that at least 650,000 pregnant women were trapped following the flood

Trauma or growth after a natural disaster? The mediating role of rumination processes.

The aim of this study was to test a cognitive model of posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to a natural disaster. It was hypothesized that although subjective severity of trauma would be related to the severity of PTS, this relation would be mediated by brooding and cognitive strategies related to the presence of repetitive negative content in thoughts. Furthermore, the relation between severity and PTG would be fully mediated by deliberate rumination (DR), cognitive strategies related to conscious efforts focused on handling the event. To evaluate the co

The role of anger and ongoing stressors in mental health following a natural disaster.

OBJECTIVE: Research has established the mental health sequelae following disaster, with studies now focused on understanding factors that mediate these outcomes. This study focused on anger, alcohol, subsequent life stressors and traumatic events as mediators in the development of mental health disorders following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, Australia's worst natural disaster in over 100 years. METHOD: This study examined data from 1017 (M = 404, F = 613) adult residents across 25 communities differentially affected by the fires and participating in the Beyond Bushfires research study.

Mapping the transition: the interplay of technology and natural disasters on sustainable energy in G20 nations.

This study investigates how technological advancement, and natural disasters shape the energy transition in G20 economies over 2005-2023. The main objective is to measure the effects of environmental innovation and disaster exposure on four SDG 7 indicators: electricity access, clean cooking access, renewable energy share, and energy efficiency. Using a panel dataset from international sources, the study applies a two-way fixed effects model as a baseline and then uses Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) and System GMM to address endogeneity and dynamic effects. Technological advancement is measure

Association between resilience, social support, and institutional trust and post-traumatic stress disorder after natural disasters.

Disasters can cause significant personal and social distress and adversely affect mental health. Compared with research on the risk factors of post-disaster post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), limited studies have reported protective factors against PTSD. We investigated whether resilience, social support, and trust in government were associated with PTSD in disaster survivors, after adjustment for the perceived damage and demographic variables including sex, age, and economic status. We investigated 2311 disaster survivors, using data from the "Long-term survey on the change of life of Dis

Benthic fish dynamics after a natural disaster: Rebuilding from scratch.

Natural disasters often affect the dynamics of marine ecosystems, the most common being the volcanic eruptions. However, despite being common these are understudied. The aim of this study was to describe the natural recovery of the benthic fish community on new lava flows. We performed periodic sampling until 26 months after the eruption ended. By the end of the monitoring, the fish community has practically recovered completely. Only a few of species remained undetected within the lava flows. Two patterns of colonisation were detected, adults and juvenile colonisers from nearby areas, and new
