Cross-sectional surveillance of bluetongue virus, epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, and chronic wasting disease in wild cervids in Nebraska.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) are Culicoides-transmitted orbiviruses, while chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an enzootic prion disease affecting North American cervids, primarily transmitted through contact with prions shed in bodily secretions and excretions. Recent work has shown the potential of retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RPLNs) for virus surveillance in addition to CWD and concurrent surveillance of these distinct diseases is limited. During the 2025 Nebraska hunting season, 780 RPLN samples were tested for CWD, BTV, and EHDV. Overall, 25.0% (195/7

Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi infected Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) associated with local Lyme disease transmission in Nebraska, USA, 2021.

In August 2021, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was notified by a local public health department of a cluster of two Lyme disease cases in patients with local exposure to wooded areas in a county located in their jurisdiction. Epidemiological investigations revealed that the two patients had similar symptom onset dates and had likely exposure to ticks at wooded sites located directly adjacent to one another. Two environmental investigations were completed in October 2021 and consisted of tick surveys at the patients' reported sites of tick exposure. 12 ticks were collected

Helmet Use, Clinical Outcomes, and Short-Term Direct Cost After Repeal of Nebraska's Universal Motorcycle Helmet Law.

BACKGROUND: On January 1, 2024, Nebraska repealed its universal motorcycle helmet law for riders aged ≥21 years with a valid Class M license. We evaluated changes in helmet use, clinical outcomes, and short-term direct institutional costs following repeal. STUDY DESIGN: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, motorcycle crash patients treated at five ACS-verified Level I-III trauma centers in eastern Nebraska before and after repeal were compared by law era and helmet status. Helmet-use trends were assessed using segmented binomial logistic regression. Cost analyses were restricted to

Assessing community-level COVID-19 infection risk through three-generational household concentration in Nebraska, U.S.: An approach for COVID-19 prevention.

The three-generational household was a focal point of concern for school and community the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. The current study, using small area data and household variables, reported an approach to neighborhood-level COVID-19 mitigation for school reopening and communities returning to normalcy. The study started with an age-stratified Poisson regression to examine the association between the proportion of three-generational households and COVID-19 infection rates based on data from 74 census tracts in Lancaster County, Nebraska, U.S. from March 5, 2020 to Augu

Spatial Epidemiology of Alcohol- and Drug-Related Health Problems Among Northern Plains American Indians: Nebraska and South Dakota, 2007 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Despite high abstinence rates, American Indians experience elevated rates of many alcohol and other drug problems. American Indians also predominantly reside in poor and rural areas, which may explain some observed health disparities. We investigated whether geographic areas including reservations or large American Indian populations exhibited greater incidence of alcohol- and drug-related hospitalizations. METHODS: We obtained inpatient hospitalization records for 2 Northern Plain states (Nebraska and South Dakota) for the years 2007 to 2012. We constructed zip code counts for 10

Chromosomal abnormalities in untreated patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: associations with histology, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcome. The Nebraska Lymphoma Study Group.

We describe the chromosomal abnormalities found in 104 previously untreated patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and the correlations of these abnormalities with disease characteristics. The cytogenetic method used was a 24- to 48-hour culture, followed by G-banding. Several significant associations were discovered. A trisomy 3 was correlated with high-grade NHL. In the patients with an immunoblastic NHL, an abnormal chromosome no. 3 or 6 was found significantly more frequently. As previously described, a t(14;18) was significantly correlated with a follicular growth pattern. Abnormaliti

Notes from the Field: Enhanced Surveillance for Raccoon Rabies Virus Variant and Vaccination of Wildlife for Management - Omaha, Nebraska, October 2023-July 2024.

On September 28, 2023, a kitten aged approximately 6 weeks found in Omaha, Nebraska, had test results positive for rabies at the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center (NVDC) after dying with neurologic signs and having bitten and scratched its caretakers. Preliminary investigation identified 10 exposed persons for whom postexposure prophylaxis (PEP)† was recommended. Subsequent variant-typing by NVDC yielded a presumptive positive result for the Eastern raccoon rabies virus variant (RRVV), which CDC confirmed on October 6.

Molecular Detection of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) in Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) Collected Along the Platte River in South Central Nebraska.

Dermacentor variabilis is the predominant tick species in Nebraska and is presumed to be the primary vector of Rickettsia rickettsii associated with cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). Interestingly, RMSF cases in Nebraska have increased on a year-to-year basis, yet the prevalence of R. rickettsii in D. variabilis ticks has not been established for Nebraska. Here we sought to set a baseline for the prevalence of R. rickettsii and other spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae harbored by D. variabilis ticks. Over a 3-yr period, D. variabilis were collected along the Platte River in sout

Identification of raccoon rabies virus variant in a stray kitten: the role of veterinary practitioners in detection and reporting of a non-native zoonotic pathogen-Nebraska, 2023.

Rabies is a fatal encephalitic disease affecting all mammals. This report describes identification of raccoon rabies virus variant isolated from a stray kitten in an urban Midwestern city that is nonendemic for this virus variant. The kitten originally presented with nonspecific neurologic abnormalities. Astute veterinary, wildlife, and public health professionals played a critical role in the identification of this fatal zoonotic disease and the extensive public health and wildlife management response that ensued. This case serves as an important reminder of the risk of rabies in unvaccinated

Performance of a commercial immunoglobulin M antibody capture assay using analyte-specific reagents to screen for interfering factors during a West Nile virus epidemic season in Nebraska.

In 2003, the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory tested more than 10,371 serum and 516 cerebral spinal fluid specimens. Results showed that without performing the interfering factors screen for specimens in the low positive index value range of >1.1 to <or=3.5, a false positivity rate of 6.5% would have been realized.
