The long-term goal of this work is to restore dexterous and intuitive head-neck motion to patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is an idiopathic disease characterized by progressive paralysis. Some patients experience neck weakness such that their heads permanently drop to their chests, causing pain and extreme difficulty eating, navigating, and socializing. We previously developed the Utah Neck Exoskeleton, a powered neck brace that supports the head and uses electric motors to move the head in a large range of motion, counteracting head drop. However, the exoskeleton has bee

Background: Chronic non-specific neck pain (CINP) is common, but the etiology remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between cervical muscle composition (cervical multifidus and longus capitis/longus colli), morphometry, range of movement, muscle function, and disability severity (Neck Disability Index) in patients with CINP. Methods: From September 2020 to July 2021, subjects underwent cervical MRI and clinical tests (cervical range of motion, cranio-cervical flexion test, neck flexor, and extensor muscle endurance). MRI analysis comprised muscle cross-sectional area, v

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in ventral and dorsal neck muscle endurance (NME) among men and women with nonspecific neck pain (NP) or cervical disk disease (who had anterior cervical decompression and fusion [ACDF]) and healthy controls (C). Another purpose was to investigate changes in NME after intervention.
METHODS: Neck muscle endurance was measured in patients with NP (n = 78) and ACDF (n = 25) before and after the treatment period, and their results were compared to each other and to sex-specific reference values from controls (n = 116) at both the

Myositis ossificans is a benign ossifying soft-tissue mass that occurs in muscle. In the majority of cases it is related to trauma but rarely observed in the neck. A 54 year-old-man with history of minor trauma and anticoagulant drug assumption for V Leiden mutation, was referred to our institution for a painless mass in the right supraclavicular fossa. On CT plan study a mass with negative attenuation values located in the posterior triangle of the neck, into the inferior belly of the right omohyoid muscle was evident. On MRI the lesion appears as an ovalar mass, with smooth borders, isointen

BACKGROUND: The loss of cervical lordosis is associated with some negative clinical outcomes. No previous study has examined cervical muscle strength, specifically in patients with the loss of cervical lordosis. This study aims to investigate whether there is weakness of the cervical muscles or an imbalance between cervical flexor and extensor muscle strength in patients with the loss of cervical lordosis compared with healthy controls matched by age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and employment status.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients with the loss of cervical lordosis (23 F, 9 M) and 31 health

PURPOSE: To determine reference values for cervical range of motion (ROM) in rotation and lateral flexion and for muscle function in the lateral neck flexors in a sample of infants who were healthy.
METHOD: ROM was measured, and muscle function was estimated in 38 infants at the ages of 2, 4, 6, and 10 months.
RESULTS: For rotation the mean ROM was 110 degrees and for lateral flexion it was 70 degrees. Infants of 2 months of age had a median muscle function score of 1 (interquartile range, 1-2). Muscle function increased to score 3 to 4 by 10 months.
CONCLUSION: Infants below 1 year of age

BACKGROUND: Muscular disorders of the neck region may be of importance for the etiology of tension-type headache. However, in adolescents, there are no data on the association between neck muscle fatigue and headache.
AIM: To study differences in fatigue characteristics of the neck flexor muscles in adolescents with and without headache.
METHODS: A population-based sample of 17-year-old adolescents with migraine-type headache (N=30), tension-type headache (N=29) and healthy controls without headache (N=30) was examined. Surface EMG data were recorded from the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle

Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) do not use the sternocleidomastoid muscles when breathing at rest, but have a greater than normal neural drive to the rib-cage inspiratory muscles, the abdominal muscles, and the diaphragm. Yet the increased activation of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm in such patients has only limited mechanical effects, and this has led to the suggestion that the overall increase in neural drive is simply an automatic response of the respiratory system to a greater than resting stimulation. To test this hypothesis, we examined the pattern

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of flight helmet weight on cervical erector spinae muscle strain under high +Gz forces. Two helmets of different weight were compared by recording inflight neck muscle activities with a portable surface-integrated EMG (IEMG) device. The obtained IEMG activities were normalized by comparing them with activities representing maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the muscles. Two test pilots carried out a total of 16 flights consisting of a series of different maneuvers. The results indicate that a lighter flight helmet may--at least in some pi

Femoral neck osteoporosis is a critical risk factor for a bedbound state, which significantly decreases overall life expectancy, if a patient falls and suffers a fracture. We performed a comprehensive blood metabolomic analysis of elderly individuals with and without femoral neck osteoporosis. Among the 129 metabolites that were identified, the abundance of six metabolites was significantly affected by femoral neck osteoporosis; decreases in phosphocreatine, malate, succinate, and histidine levels and increases in N1-methyladenosine and S-adenosylmethionine levels. The decline in muscle metabo

Neck muscle size and strength have been linked to lower injury risk and reduced pain. However, prior findings have been inconclusive and have failed to clarify whether there are sex differences in neck muscle size-strength relationships. Such differences may point to an underlying cause for the reported sex difference in neck pain prevalence. Thirty participants (13 males, 17 females) who underwent neck strength testing and MR imaging were analyzed. Strength was measured in three conditions that differed in posture and exertion direction. Muscle size was quantified by three metrics: anatomical

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is a very common musculoskeletal complaint in industrialized countries. Theoretically, chronic neck pain is thought to possibly change biomechanics and muscle activation patterns of the shoulder complex, causing its pain and dysfunction in the long term.
PURPOSE: The present cross-sectional study was conducted to compare shoulder complex muscle activation characteristics in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain, compared to healthy participants.
METHOD: Twenty patients with chronic neck pain and twenty healthy participants were recruited for the present study.

Musculoskeletal modeling allows for analysis of individual muscles in various situations. However, current techniques to realistically simulate muscle response when significant amounts of intentional coactivation is required are inadequate. This would include stiffening the neck or spine through muscle coactivation in preparation for perturbations or impacts. Muscle coactivation has been modeled previously in the neck and spine using optimization techniques that seek to maximize the joint stiffness by maximizing total muscle activation or muscle force. These approaches have not sought to repli

This observational study investigated skydiver neck muscle activity during parachute opening shock (POS), as epidemiological data recently suggested neck pain in skydivers to be related to POS. Twenty experienced skydivers performed two terminal velocity skydives each. Surface electromyography quantified muscle activity bilaterally from the anterior neck, the upper and lower posterior neck, and the upper shoulders; and two triaxial accelerometers sampled deceleration. Muscle activity was normalized as the percentage of reference maximum voluntary electrical activity (% MVE); and temporal muscl

The aim of this study was to describe and explain the variation of neck muscle strength along the cervical spine. A three-dimensional model of the head-neck complex was developed to test the hypothesis that the moment-generating capacity of the neck musculature is lower in the upper cervical spine than in the lower cervical spine. The model calculations suggest that the neck muscles can protect the lower cervical spine from injury during extension and lateral bending. The maximum flexor moment developed in the lower cervical spine was 2 times higher than that developed in the upper spine. The

Prevention of rear-impact neck injuries remains challenging for safety designers due to a lack of understanding of the tissue-level response and injury risk. Soft tissue injuries have been inferred from clinical, cadaveric, and numerical studies; however, there is a paucity of data for neck muscle injury, commonly reported as muscle pain. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of muscle pre-tension and activation on muscle strain and injury risk resulting from low-severity rear impacts using a detailed finite element head and neck model (HNM). The HNM was extracted from the GHBMC

BACKGROUND: Disturbance in neck muscle function is a well-known complication of chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNNP). It is, however, unclear which muscles are more susceptible to functional impairment in patients with CNNP during upper limb tasks.
OBJECTIVES: To compare ultrasonographic changes in dorsal neck muscles thickness in patients with CNNP and asymptomatic controls while they performed a light load upper-limb movement.
DESIGN: Case control.
SETTING: University research laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty individuals with CNNP with a mean age of 23.35 ± 2.94 and 20 asymptomatic contr
