Gaining patient consent for blood tests following sharps injuries.

There is a high risk of staff receiving needlestick and other sharps injuries while working in health care. Concern is so great that a seminar on sharps injury prevention and single-use medical devices was held in March 2003 at the European Parliament in Brussels. Injuries caused by needles and other sharp medical devices, and the related risk of potentially fatal disease transmission, remain a major threat to the health and safety of health care workers across the European Union.

Evaluating Swine Injection Technologies as a Workplace Musculoskeletal Injury Intervention: A Study Protocol.

Intensification of modern swine production has led to many new technologies, including needleless injectors. Although needleless injectors may increase productivity (by reducing injection time) and reduce needlestick injuries, the effect on risk for musculoskeletal disorders is not clear. This project will compare conventional needles with needleless injectors in terms of cost, productivity, injury rates, biomechanical exposures, and worker preference. Muscle activity (EMG) and hand/wrist posture will be measured on swine workers performing injection tasks with both injection methods. Video re

Healthcare at Risk: Why Do Sudan's Healthcare Workers Face Gaps in Hepatitis B Virus Protection?

Background Hepatitis B, a widespread and potentially life-threatening viral infection, affects millions globally. Transmission occurs through exposure to the bodily fluids of infected individuals, placing healthcare workers (HCWs) at heightened risk due to frequent contact with patients. This study evaluated hepatitis B vaccination rates, causes of incomplete immunization, and incidents of needlestick injuries among HCWs at Khartoum Teaching Hospital, Sudan. Methods Seventy-three HCWs from the different departments of Khartoum teaching hospital departments were recruited. Participants complete

Acute hepatitis C virus infection related to capillary blood glucose meter.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects an estimated 130-150 million people worldwide, becoming the major cause of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation. There are various preventable modes of transmission of HCV infection, including needlestick and sharps injuries. However, HCV infection secondary to needlestick injury by a capillary blood glucose meter (CBGM) lancet has not been previously well reported. We describe an unusual case of a 25-year-old male medical student, acquiring acute HCV infection with a lancing device of CBGM. The source patient was

Evaluating nurse preferences for a novel on-body delivery system vs. manual syringes for large-volume subcutaneous drug administration: a survey study.

While nurses report challenges with the manual administration of large-volume subcutaneous drugs, these challenges and potential solutions are not captured in the literature. In this cross-sectional study, 45 nurses with experience administering large-volume subcutaneous biologics completed an 18-item survey about preferences for syringes vs. on-body delivery systems. 100% responded that an on-body delivery system seemed easy to learn and use and preferable to syringes. In a drug delivery scenario including comprehensive administration details and assuming equivalent safety and efficacy, 97.78

Surgery, surgical pathology and HIV infection: lessons learned in Zambia.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection is prevalent in many areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Seropositivity rates reach 10-15% in urban adults, 21% in critically ill adults and 30% in surgical inpatients aged 21-40 years. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a multisystem disease which presents to the surgeon with a wide range of pathologies including Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphadenopathy and sepsis. The more common sites for sepsis are the female genital tract, anorectum, pleural cavity, soft tissues (necrotizing fasciitis) and bone and joints. To prevent iatrogenic HIV infection more

The response of cerebral cortex to haemorrhagic damage: experimental evidence from a penetrating injury model.

Understanding the response of the brain to haemorrhagic damage is important in haemorrhagic stroke and increasingly in the understanding the cerebral degeneration and dementia that follow head trauma and head-impact sports. In addition, there is growing evidence that haemorrhage from small cerebral vessels is important in the pathogenesis of age-related dementia (Alzheimer's disease). In a penetration injury model of rat cerebral cortex, we have examined the neuropathology induced by a needlestick injury, with emphasis on features prominent in the ageing and dementing human brain, particularly

The silent normalization of biological exposures in operating rooms: an overlooked occupational crisis.

Operating room personnel are exposed to biological hazards such as needlestick injuries and blood and body fluid exposure, which pose risks of bloodborne infections. However, many of these incidents remain unreported. Underreporting is driven by normalization of exposure, fear of blame, workload, and limited knowledge of reporting procedures. This leads to underestimation of occupational risk and weakens prevention strategies. Improving reporting systems, education, and institutional support is essential to enhance occupational safety in perioperative settings.

Percutaneous injury during dermatologic surgery.

An anonymous survey was conducted among 100 randomly selected fellows of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Forty-one respondents provided information about their experience with percutaneous injury. Causes of injury during 6278 invasive procedures performed during a 1-month period included suture needlesticks (two injuries), injection needlestick (one), needle recapping (one), scalpel blade (one), skin hook (one), and an injury during the transport of an instrument (one). Dermatologic surgeons were more likely to injure their dominant fingers. Attitudes of dermatologic surgeons we

Accidental death due to acupuncture-induced multiple organ injuries: fatal improper practices.

As an effective alternative therapy, acupuncture is increasingly recognized and utilized worldwide. While acupuncture is used to treat neurological, respiratory, and circulatory disorders, its clinical efficacy is influenced by various factors. Even minimal stabbing wounds may cause physical injury or be life-threatening if done improperly. We report the case of a young man who died suddenly after receiving acupuncture treatment. Autopsy revealed multiple needlestick wounds in the bilateral lungs, liver, and spleen, leading to traumatic pneumothorax and hemoperitoneum, and the man ultimately d

Flexor tendon laceration of the hand from opening a glass ampoule.

Sharps and needlestick injuries are serious work-related injuries to the hand in healthcare workers (HCWs). We present two cases of HCWs with hand injuries from opening a medicinal glass ampoule. The index finger (IF) was involved in both cases, with an associated flexor tendon injury, presenting as inability to flex the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. Sensation was intact, and radiographs showed no foreign body. The surgical repair of the flexor tendon injury was carried out using the Wide-awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet technique. The quality of the repair was tested intraop

Intranasal Ketorolac for Acute Pain in Adult Emergency Department Patients.

Pain is a common complaint in the emergency department. An alternative to opioids is desirable. Oral medications are not feasible with gastrointestinal disorders or NPO. Intravenous medications require skill and time. Intravenous/intramuscular medications are painful with potential needlestick injury. Intranasal medications have rapid onset, easy administration, do not need skilled providers, and no risk of needlestick injury. A total of 28 adults with acute pain (numeric rating scale ≥ 4) received intranasal ketorolac. Numeric rating scale decreased in all: 32% complete pain relief, median (i

Universal precautions: attitudes of Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists.

OBJECTIVE: To survey the attitudes of a group of Australasian anaesthetists to the risks of bloodborne infections, and their understanding of Universal Precautions. DESIGN: A questionnaire survey. SETTING: A conference on health risks to anaesthetists in August 1995. PARTICIPANTS: 162 Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists. RESULTS: Two-thirds of anaesthetists favoured preoperative HIV and hepatitis B and C testing; they rarely took "risk" histories from patients preoperatively. Only 37% always wore gloves while administering anaesthetics, and 67% reported they resheathed needles. Thirty

Sharps disposal containers.

Sharps disposal containers are specially designed containers into which used needles and other medical-waste sharps are discarded. They are intended to protect hospital employees--including sharps users and other workers downstream--from sharps injuries that result from contact with needles and other sharp devices. Since our last Evaluation of sharps containers in August-September 1993, manufacturers have introduced various new designs that may further reduce the risk of needlesticks and other sharp-object injuries (SOIs). These designs are intended to prevent users from overfilling the sharps

[Needle spiking : medical and social issues].

The phenomenon of needle spiking/pricking entails the non-consensual puncturing of a person with a sharp object, usually occurring in a festive setting. During their consultations, victims of this type of assault report concerns regarding the administration of substances which could lead to drug-facilitated submission, transmission of pathogens, namely HIV, hepatitis B and C, and violation of their corporeal integrity. The patient's unique perception, alongside the social representations of these risks, prompt the healthcare professional to adopt a stance of attentive listening, humaneness, an
