Constructing queer mother-knowledge and negotiating medical authority in online lesbian pregnancy journals.

Medical interactions around reproduction are increasingly extending beyond the physician's office and onto the Internet, where negotiation with medical authority occurs in complex and dynamic ways. Recently, scholars have noted the Internet's potential for creating spaces where women can dialogue with and reconstruct medical authority, yet this growing body of work is overwhelming heteronormative. This paper thus interrogates how lesbian women use the Internet to challenge, deploy, and rework medical authority around reproduction while navigating the transition to parenthood. I draw from 17 on

Unstable terminality: negotiating the meaning of chronicity and terminality in motor neurone disease.

This paper explores the meaning of chronicity and terminality in motor neurone disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). There is no known cause or cure for MND, and expected survival is 2-5 years, but several interventions may improve or prolong life. This study draws on qualitative interview data with health professionals in hospitals and primary care, and family carers, in Norway. The actors emphasised chronic and terminal aspects in subtly different ways along the entire illness trajectory, also when recounting the trajectory in retrospect. As a consequence of impro

Negotiating multiple barriers: health workers' access to counselling, testing and treatment in Malawi.

Malawi is facing a severe HIV and AIDS epidemic with an estimated 12% of its population living with the virus. Health workers are on the front lines of the HIV epidemic and they face the risk of HIV infection in both their personal and professional lives. This mixed method study aimed to explore the enablers and barriers to HIV counselling and testing and antiretroviral therapy by health workers in Malawi. After qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with health workers in the Mchinji and Nsanje districts, a survey questionnaire was constructed and administered to 906 heal

The evolving science of negotiation alternatives: New contexts, new perspectives.

We review the past decade (2016 - present) of empirical research on negotiation alternatives across multiple disciplines, including dyadic bargaining, international trade, and civil conflict interventions. Three themes emerged in our analysis: First, research has focused on how the effects of a negotiator's BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) are not person-invariant but are instead moderated by the characteristics of the party who "holds" the BATNA. Second, studies are establishing the conditions under which negotiation alternatives can backfire and hurt a negotiator's performa

Personality engineering with AI agents: A new methodology for negotiation research.

According to canonical negotiation theory, people's success in a negotiation depends on how well they balance competing demands-empathizing and asserting, demonstrating concern for other and concern for self, being soft on the people and hard on the problem. Yet people struggle to manage these tensions, so researchers have lacked the ability to rigorously test the field's prescriptions under controlled conditions. AI agents do not face the same limitations, and their precision, repertoire, consistency, and scalability enable a new class of experiments to contribute to negotiation theory. In th

Hidden dissatisfaction after agreement: Post-negotiation perceptual alignment.

Negotiations continue to have consequences after an agreement or impasse. When parties reach a deal, value is often created only later, as they implement commitments, adapt to uncertainty, or decide whether to negotiate again. This review introduces post-negotiation perceptual alignment, how accurately a negotiator understands the counterpart's post-negotiation experience. Integrating research on subjective value, interpersonal perception, and post-agreement outcomes, I distinguish four states: recognized satisfaction, recognized dissatisfaction, overestimated dissatisfaction, and hidden dissa

Effects of obesity class on flat ground walking and obstacle negotiation.

OBJECTIVES: Although much is known about the impact of obesity on gait, not much is understood about how classes of obesity affect movement. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of weight classification on walking. METHODS: Sixty-seven women with normal BMI (n=13), overweight/Class I obesity (n=18), Class II obesity (n=16), and Class III obesity (n=20) participated. Gait parameters (velocity and percent of the gait cycle spent in swing and stance phases) were collected as participants walked on flat ground and crossed three obstacle heights. RESULTS: Adults with normal BMI ha

Responsibility, risk and negotiation in the discourse of gay men's group sex.

Responsibility for the practise of (un)safe sex, for taking or not taking risks in relation to HIV transmission and for the negotiation of (safe) sex have been concerns in HIV-prevention research for a long time. This paper presents the findings of a discourse analysis of interview texts collected as part of the Three or More Study. We examine what, in the discourse examined, constrains and enables 'response-ability' - the capacity to respond to others and one's self in light of the complex contingencies that operate to enliven sexual contexts. We identify three key aspects of these sexual con

Altered obstacle negotiation after low thoracic hemisection in the cat.

Following a lateralized spinal cord injury (SCI) in humans, substantial walking recovery occurs; however, deficits persist in adaptive features of locomotion critical for community ambulation, including obstacle negotiation. Normal obstacle negotiation is accomplished by an increase in flexion during swing. If an object is unanticipated or supraspinal input is absent, obstacle negotiation may involve the spinally organized stumbling corrective response. How these voluntary and reflex components are affected following partial SCI is not well studied. This study is the first to characterize reco

Work-related sickness absence negotiations: GPs' qualitative perspectives.

BACKGROUND: GPs can find their role as issuers of sickness certification problematic, particularly in trying to maintain a balance between certifying absence and preserving the doctor-patient relationship. Little research has been published on consultations in which sickness absence has been certified. AIM: To explore negotiations between GPs and patients in sickness absence certification, including how occupational health training may affect this process. METHOD: A qualitative study was undertaken with GPs trained in occupational health who also participate in a UK wide surveillance scheme

Gambling in Canada, from vice to disease to responsibility: a negotiated history.

Gamblers and gambling have been variously viewed as derelict, immoral or criminal. Since the mid-1960s, notions of gambling generally and excessive gambling specifically have been reconstructed. Gambling, if done in moderation, is today generally viewed as an acceptable form of leisure. Those who gamble to the extent that relationships, family, friends, physical, social and mental heath, employment, or finances are adversely affected are now regarded as having a problem and offered government-sponsored therapeutic intervention. Recent developments in this transformative process have witnessed

Negotiation and relationships: Insights from adjacent, psychologically-grounded literature.

Negotiations often unfold within ongoing relationships, making relationships integral to negotiation processes and outcomes. Yet, despite repeated calls for greater attention to relational dynamics, behavioral negotiation research has largely relied on paradigms that minimize the role of relationships. We review research from adjacent, psychologically-grounded literature (e.g., on close relationships, marketing, strategy, and operations) that conceptualize negotiation as embedded within ongoing relationships. We show that negotiations in relationships unfold under distinct starting conditions

Rethinking negotiation research through large(r) data sets.

Negotiation research is increasingly moving beyond small, tightly controlled laboratory simulations toward larger and more diverse data sources. Here, we review research on negotiations that uses large datasets and show how utilizing such datasets can advance contemporary negotiation research. We define large(r) data broadly by volume (i.e., number of observations), variety (i.e., different data modalities), and velocity (i.e., temporal density of observations). Our review is organized around four shifts for negotiation research through such data. First, platform data can make impasses more vi

Beyond the Conventional: Successful Negotiation and Management of the Middle Mesial Canal.

Planning endodontic therapy requires a thorough understanding of the root canal system's typical morphology, anatomy, and potential abnormalities. A less common anatomical variation that requires careful investigation is the possibility of a middle mesial canal (MMC) in mandibular molars. The clinician's capacity to identify and treat such canals is greatly improved by the use of magnification. This case series emphasizes the significance of anatomical awareness in attaining predictable endodontic success by presenting clinical cases that highlight the identification and treatment of MMCs unde

The Impact of Threatening Facial Expressions on Negotiation: An Eye-Tracking Study.

INTRODUCTION: Facial expressions play a crucial role in social interactions, influencing trust, and decision-making. In negotiations, threatening expressions may convey dominance or hostility, potentially reducing cooperation. This study explores how threatening facial expressions and autistic traits (ATs) affect social decision-making in the Ultimatum Game (UG), focusing on their main effects on UG offers. METHOD: Fifty adults participated in the study. A Linear Mixed Model (LMM) was conducted to analyze the main effects of threat level and ATs on UG proposals. In addition, eye-tracking tech

Negotiation of Individual and Collective Identities in the Online Discourse of Autistic Adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an increasing preference for online communication within the autistic advocacy community. Yet, little is known about how online communication facilitates the formation of autistic identity. This qualitative study examined online autobiographical narratives about repetitive and restricted behaviors-specifically "stimming"-produced by autistic adults. The primary goal of this study was to investigate how the production of, and online interactions around, these narratives functioned as collaborative resources for empowered autistic identities. METHODS: Nin

Neural correlates of obstacle negotiation in older adults: An fNIRS study.

Older adults are less efficient at avoiding obstacles compared to young adults, especially under attention-demanding conditions. Using functional near-infrared-spectroscopy (fNIRS), recent studies implicated the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in cognitive control of locomotion, notably under dual-task walking conditions. The neural substrates underlying Obstacle Negotiation (ON), however, have not been established. The current study determined the role of the PFC in ON during walking in seniors. Non-demented older adults (n=90; mean age=78.1±5.5years; %female=51) underwent fNIRS acquisition to assess

The impact of intimate partner violence on women's condom negotiation efficacy.

HIV prevention efforts promote the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and other STDs. Thus, a woman's agency to practice healthy sexual behaviors necessarily involves negotiation with another person. This poses unique challenges for women who have limited power in relationships. The current study explores how the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts a woman's confidence in her ability to negotiate condom use with a sexual partner (i.e., condom use self-efficacy), using data from incarcerated females in three states, who were interviewed just prior to release back into
