During the course of a primary infection of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in protein-malnourished rats, plasma concentrations of corticosterone were found to decrease from 0.89 +/- 0.03 at the start of the infection to 0.28 +/- 0.08 mumol/l, 9 days post-infection (p.i.). Similarly, adreno-corticotrophic hormone levels were also observed to fall from 62.09 +/- 12.06 to 20.54 +/- 1.81 by 5 days p.i. and to 35.12 +/- 16.61 nmol/l by 9 days p.i. However, no significant changes were seen in the dry weight of the adrenal glands other than those expected in relation to changes in body weight. Concentr

In mice concurrently infected with Hymenolepis citelli and Nematospiroides dubius, survival of the tapeworm was prolonged, and there was an impairment of the efferent arm of the response to the cestode. The immunological rejection of a six cysticercoid primary H. citelli infection was delayed by the N. dubius infection. The growth of the cestode was poorer in concurrently infected mice, and this effect was rapid, being evident within 4 days of the N. dubius infection. Maximum biomass in the controls was reached on Day 20, whereas in the concurrently infected mice it was reached on Day 25. The

Pathologic effects and host response were evaluated in seven white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and six mule deer (O. hemionus hemionus) each exposed per os to 300 or 1000 third-stage larvae of Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei. Pathologic effects in mule deer consisted of hemorrhagic myositis throughout skeletal muscles, severe verminous pneumonia, and moderate lymphadenitis. The major host response was a granulomatous inflammation associated with nematode eggs and larvae. Granulomas obliterated the normal architecture of affected tissues. Pathologic effects and host response were minimal

Nematodes of the family Cystidicolidae Skryabin, 1946 represent a complex group of parasites of aquatic organisms. They are present in freshwater, estuarine, and marine environments, with fish as intermediate, paratenic, and definitive hosts. This study adds relevant data on the morphology, morphometry, and parasitic ecology of third-stage larvae of Pseudoproleptus Khera, 1953 in fish consumed by riverside populations in the Amazon. A total of 92 fish specimens were acquired between March 2024 and January 2025 from artisanal fishing, distributed among five species: Astronotus ocellatus; Cichla

Ascaridia galli (Nematoda: Ascaridiidae), infecting mainly the small intestine of chickens, is one of the most common nematodes in poultry worldwide. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of A. galli was 13,981 bp in total length with 36 coding genes, namely, 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNAs, and 22 transfer RNAs. All PCGs were transcribed in one direction. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitogenome of A. galli would further contribute to resolving its phylogenetic position and offer novel perspectives on phylogenetic studies of A. galli.

In a survey of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the northwest of Iran, eleven isolates of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were recovered mainly from the soil samples of apple orchards. The isolates were identified morphologically and molecularly. To unravel intraspecific variation, morphometric characters of different life stages, including hermaphrodite, female, male and infective juvenile (IJ), were evaluated to see efficiencies in discrimination of H. bacteriophora populations isolated from relatively limited geographical regions. Morphometric data were subjected to principal component an

The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of Trichuris skrjabini has been determined in the current study and subsequently compared with closely related species by phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated datasets of mt amino acid sequences. The whole mt genome of T. skrjabini is circular and 14,011 bp in length. It consists of a total of 37 genes including 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNAs) genes, and two non-coding regions. The gene arrangement and contents were consistent with other members of the Trichuridae family including Trichuris su

Nematodes belonging to the genus Anisakis are important parasites due to their abundance in seafood and health impacts on humans. In the present study Anisakis larvae were found in a number of uncommon hosts including the Grey petrel, Procellaria cinerea, the Little penguin, Eudyptula minor, Blue-lipped sea krait, Laticauda laticaudata and Spinner shark, Carcharhinus brevipinna. Morphological examination showed nematodes in these animals are Anisakis larval type I. Genetic characterisation suggested that the larva from one Grey petrel was Anisakis berlandi, whereas the other larvae from the se

A European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) found dead in England had marked blepharitis and periocular alopecia associated with Aprocta cylindrica (Nematoda: Aproctidae) and concurrent mixed fungal infections. Aprocta cylindrica should be considered a differential diagnosis in periocular abnormalities of robins and other insectivorous, migratory passerines in Western Europe.

The development of the nematode Procamallanus saccobranchi Karve, 1952, a parasite in the stomach of the fish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), was studied in Mesocyclops crassus (Fischer) and Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus). After being ingested by the copepods the nematode first-stage larvae penetrated into the haemocoel of the intermediate host; there they moulted twice (on days 3 and 5 p.i. at 28-30 degrees C) attaining the third, infective stage. The definitive host H. fossilis acquired infection by feeding on copepods harbouring infective-stage larvae; in the stomach of this definitive host

The Trichinella genus, considered monospecific till 1972, is now composed of at least seven gene pools. The Soviet authors identified four of them as good species: T. spiralis, T. nativa, T. nelsoni and T. pseudospiralis. The biochemical approach identified three new taxonomic groups called Trichinella T3, T5, T6 on the operational level. Each gene pool has a well-defined distribution. T. spiralis only has a ubiquitous distribution due to passive importation caused by man. The life cycle of these nematodes unfolds inside of a single warm blood host. The ingested muscle larvae penetrate inside

A mermithid nematode was found parasitizing nymphs of dragonflies and damselflies. The host specimens were collected from the stream Cajaravilla, Magdalena, Buenos Aires state, Argentina. In this work, we described Amphimermis enzoni n. sp., a nematode new to science. Nematodes were identified through morphological and molecular methods. The combination of the following characters separates A. enzoni n. sp. from other members of the genus Amphimermis Steiner: long and S-shaped vagina, twisted spicules for proximal 34% of their length, untwisted for 12%, again twisted for 30%, and untwisted for

For the first time, a survey of plant-parasitic nematodes in the Central Highlands of Vietnam discovered a population of Xiphinema hunaniense Wang & Wu, 1992. The Vietnamese population of X. hunaniense is characterized by having an offset lip region, lack of anterior genital branch, vagina directed backward, and a digitate tail. Morphological features and morphometrics of this population are in agreement with the type population of X. hunaniense except for some variations. In addition, molecular characterization of this population and phylogenetic tree of 28S rDNA sequences of the genus are al
