Clinical and mammographic follow-up of 149 patients diagnosed of stage I and II breast neoplasm and treated with conservative surgery and irradiation between January 1986 and December 1988 was reviewed to determine clinical and radiographic recurrence pattern. Follow-up controls included a clinical examination and a mammogram at 6-9 months, a second at 10-16, a third at 17-22, a fourth at 23-24 and a mammogram yearly and a clinical examination every 6 months thereafter. To December 1991 18 patients recurred. 12 had a metastatic spread, 3 a unique local recurrence and 3 a local recurrence with

Oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma with a characteristic morphology and specific behavior. To date, few studies are available focusing the prevalence and clinicopathologic features of the oral verrucous carcinoma in Brazilian population. A total of 3,500 primary oral well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma surgically excised in the A.C. Camargo Cancer Hospital and Amaral Carvalho Cancer Hospital, Brazil, from 1980 to 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty cases of verrucous carcinomas were identified, most of them occurring in older male with ag

BACKGROUND: Local excisions are important in a tailored approach to treatment of rectal neoplasms. In cases of low risk T1 local excision facilitates rectal-preserving treatment. Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) is the most recent alternative developed for local excision. In this study we evaluate the results after implementing TAMIS as the routine procedure for local excision of rectal neoplasms.
METHODS: All patients who underwent TAMIS from January 2016 to January 2020 at St. Olav's University Hospital were included, and clinical, pathological and oncological data were prospect

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor is a rare soft tissue mesenchymal neoplasm of unclear lineage and intermediate malignant potential, primarily arising in subcutaneous tissues of the limbs, head and neck, or trunk. Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors can be classified as typical, atypical, or malignant. While, most ossifying fibromyxoid tumors exhibit benign behavior, a subset demonstrates malignant tendencies, with a potential for local recurrence and distant metastasis. We report a case of an atypical ossifying fibromyxoid tumor in the soft tissue of the right elbow, characterized by multiple local recur

Fine needle aspiration and tissue biopsy samples were taken from a subcutaneous mass in the cranial stifle region of a 10-yr-old horse. Key cytologic features included numerous mildly to moderately pleomorphic histiocytic cells admixed with mononuclear inflammatory cells, occasional fibroblasts, multinucleated cells, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Based on these features, cytologic differentials included granulomatous inflammation with reactive fibroplasia, histiocytic sarcoma, giant cell tumor of soft parts (GCTSPs), and giant cell tumor of bone. The tissue biopsy supported a diagnosis of

Aggressive angiomyxoma is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm. It arises from soft tissue of pelvis and perineum in fertile females, occurring very rarely in males. Its name emphasizes the common local recurrence and infiltrative tendency, but usually it does not metastasize. Currently, the first line of therapy is surgical excision, achieving R0 surgical margins, and radiological follow-up. This case report describes an uncommon, incidental finding of paratesticular aggressive angiomyxoma in an asymptomatic, cryptorchid 72-year-old male patient.

AIMS: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a mesenchymal neoplasm originating from perivascular myoid cells. We report a case of PEComa arising from the ciliary body.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 13-year-old girl was referred to our department with a clinical diagnosis of ciliary body melanoma in her right eye. Her visual acuity was 20/600 OD. Slit-lamp examination revealed a brown tumor behind the iris. The ocular fundus could not be observed due to a cataract. Ultrasonography depicted an oval mass approximately 10 mm in diameter at the ciliary body. The tumor was successfull

Five patients with vulvar extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) are reported. They accounted for 4.4% of all vulvar malignancies diagnosed in the south of Israel between 1961-1997. Mean age was 64.4 years and the predominant symptom was vulvar pruritus. Three patients had intra-epidermal lesions (managed by wide local excision or, at most, simple vulvectomy), one had a minimally invasive lesion (managed by simple vulvectomy) and one had EMPD with an underlying apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (managed by radical vulvectomy and bilateral groin dissection followed by pelvic radiotherapy). EMPD recurr

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon malignant plasma cell neoplasm which usually presents as soft tissue mass in the head and neck. We retrospectively reviewed 7 cases with EMP of the head and neck between 1978 and 1992. All patients were male. Their ages ranged from 27 to 66 years. M-protein was identified in 5 patients (IgG-kappa in 3, IgG-lambda in 1 and Lambda light chain in 1). All but one were treated with local irradiation. Three patients received chemotherapy. All patients have been alive for 37+ to 116+ months since the diagnosis of EMP. One patient had a cervical node re

Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) is a rare, benign neoplasm originating from musculoaponeurotic stromal structures characterized by aggressive growth and infiltration of local tissues. To date, only six previous cases of AF involving the larynx have been reported. The present case was that of a 70-year-old female patient with a 5-year history of hoarseness and an enlarging neck mass consistent with aggressive recurrent fibromatosis. MRI displayed a large, solid mass arising from the left anterior cervical space displacing the trachea and upper airway to the right. At one year after the initial rad

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign, translocation-derived neoplasm. Because of its high local recurrence rate after surgery and occurrence of osteochondral destruction, a novel therapeutic target is required. The present study aimed to evaluate the significance of protein expression possibly associated with the pathogenesis during the clinical course of PVNS. In 40 cases of PVNS, positivity of colony-stimulated factor 1 (CSF1), its receptor (CSF1R), and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) were immunohistochemically determined. The relationship between t

Brenner tumors are uncommon ovarian neoplasms, most of which are benign, although borderline and malignant variants occur. We report 2 unusual ovarian neoplasms composed of an admixture of typical benign Brenner tumor and a low-grade epithelial neoplasm which we designate as low-grade basaloid carcinoma. The latter component morphologically and immunohistochemically resembled "salivary gland-type/myoepithelial" neoplasms with variable positive staining with cytokeratins, p63, S100, and CD117. One tumor exhibited aggressive behavior with local recurrence and distant metastasis. This neoplasm ex

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, frequently lethal, primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. Histopathologically, it appears as a dermal nodule of small, undifferentiated malignant cells. Historically, MCC was considered to be an eccrine carcinoma. Recognition of its neuroendocrine features later led to the hypothesis that it arose from Merkel cells in the skin, although recent evidence revisits the question of an epithelial origin. We present a case of MCC arising on the temple of a 78-year-old male, in association with an actinic keratosis. Three years later, a local tumor recurre

Meningeal hemangiopericytoma is a rare neoplasm arising from perivascular pericytes. Accounting for < 1% of all brain tumors, these neoplasms are characterized by a high local recurrence rate and metastatic potential. Meningeal hemangiopericytoma occur most frequently during the fifth decade of life, with an almost equal sex incidence. To evaluate and define the role for primary, postoperative, or palliative radiotherapy in meningeal hemangiopericytoma, data were gathered from our own tumor registry and compiled with an extensive analysis of published series and case reports. This analysis rev

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive skin neoplasm; only two cases of sarcomatoid differentiation have been reported. Whereas surgery is effective as first line treatment, optimal management of recurrent or metastatic porocarcinoma is not defined and needs multidisciplinary approach. Here we described the first reported case of metastatic sarcomatoid porocarcinoma. Our patient experienced multiple recurrences, mainly loco-regional, and was treated with a multidisciplinary treatment, involving surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and target therapy, leading to a more than 4 years survi

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare, slow-growing mesenchymal neoplasm with a tendency to recur. It mainly involves the pelvis, vulva, perineum, vagina, and urinary bladder in adult women of reproductive age group. We describe a 26-year-old female with large swellings of both labia majora which was histologically diagnosed as aggressive angiomyxoma. She also had systemic lupus erythematosus. The swelling was surgically removed and she had no recurrence at 1-year follow-up. Although it is a rare tumor, it must be considered as a differential diagnosis for any mass in the perineum or soft tissue of

Primary adrenal angiosarcoma is a rare, malignant, vascular neoplasm. These neoplasms typically arise in middle age (median age of 60 years) and are more common in males (65%) than in females. Although rare, these neoplasms are aggressive with a propensity for local recurrence and metastasis and a median survival of 18 months. We present 2 cases of primary adrenal angiosarcoma with synchronous, ipsilateral adrenocortical adenomas. We review the cases of adrenal angiosarcoma reported since 1988 and discuss their clinical and histopathologic characteristics.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) usually presents in the extremities or retroperitoneum. Cases involving the kidney are rare and portend a poor prognosis. Although radical nephrectomy is the most beneficial curative choice for this neoplasm, patients are often treated with adjuvant chemotherapy due to high risk of local recurrence and distant metastases. We describe a case of a 68-year-old woman affected by MFH, treated with both nephrectomy and radiotherapy without systemic therapy showing an unexpected twenty-four-month postsurgery survival outcome.

The etiology of pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is not clear. Researchers have suggested that localized nodular synovitis is an inflammatory process, but more recent studies tend to describe the lesion as benign synovial neoplasm with the potential of local recurrence. Although the theoretical risk of secondarily seeding the remainder of the knee is evident, this is the first report of a subcutaneous PVNS caused by portal contamination during knee arthroscopy and open synovectomy. It supports a neoplastic origin of this lesion.
