BACKGROUND: To investigate the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of gemcitabine and oxaliplatin (GEMOX) in patients with relapsed or cisplatin-refractory non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with relapsed or cisplatin-refractory NSGCT were treated with gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8 followed by oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks for a maximum of six cycles. Twenty-four patients (83%) were considered refractory and five (17%) absolutely refractory to cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) represents the association of proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, and hyperlipidemia. Steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) is defined by primary resistance to standard steroid therapy. It remains one of the most intractable causes for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the first two decades of life. Sporadic mutations in the Wilms' tumor suppressor gene WT1 have been found to be present in patients with SRNS in association with Wilms' tumor (WT) and urinary or genital malformations, as well as in patients with isolated SRNS.

Between September 1995 and December 2010, 99 new consecutive assessable patients with extra-cranial MGCT were treated according to SFOP/SFCE TGM95 Protocol. A "watch and wait" strategy for completely resected stage I-II was observed in cases with preoperative high tumor markers levels. Metastatic disease or alpha fetoprotein levels > 15 000 ng/ml cases were treated by VIP chemotherapy (etoposide, ifosfamide and CDDP) 4-6-courses. CONTEXT: Aromatase deficiency causes obesity and insulin resistance in aromatase knockout mice and humans with rare mutations of the aromatase gene (CYP19). Aromatase inhibitors are a commonly prescribed therapy for postmenopausal breast cancer.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that aromatase inhibitors induce obesity and insulin resistance when used in treatment of breast cancer.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
SETTING: University teaching hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: Patients with postmenopausal breast cancer (n = 20) treated with aromatase inhibitors and 20 age-matched control subjects.

A literature review of pregnancy-related vertebral haemangiomas, pregnancy-related haemangiomas outside the nervous system and its coverings, and pregnancy-related meningiomas was performed. BACKGROUND: Yolk sac tumor (YST), embryonal carcinoma (EC), choriocarcinoma (CC), and combined germ cell tumors (CGCTs) of the mediastinum are uncommon neoplasms. The present review confirms the existence of the so-called "ovarian-derived prorenin-angiotensin cascade". It also describes the physiopathology of the system and, consequently, its role in the genesis of phenomena concerning reproductive function such as ovulation, steroid synthesis and folliculogenesis.
