Squamous cell carcinoma in chronic ulcerative lesions: a case report and literature review.

A case report and literature review are presented involving a fatal case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower extremity. The unique aspects of this patient include the young age at presentation (35 years old), and the association with both a burn scar (Marjolin's) ulcer and a draining osteomyelitis fistulus tract. Epidemiologic data for Marjolin's ulcers as well as squamous cell carcinoma associated with draining sinus tracts of osteomyelitis are reviewed, in addition to the recommended management of such patients. The case presented is a reminder of the need to maintain a high index of sus

Exuberant granulation tissue mimicking vascular tumours associated with burns.

A case of simultaneous development of multiple vascular neoplasms in a patient with a previous history of burns and lymphoblastic lymphoma is reported. Microscopic examination revealed angiomatosis made up of diffuse capillary proliferation. We speculate that endogenous factors could have played an important role in the development of these neoplasms. We discuss the clinical and histological differential diagnosis of the case presented: a disseminated variant of lobular capillary haemangioma, Kaposi's sarcoma, bacillary angiomatosis and hyperplastic granulation tissue.

[Carcinoma arising from postburn scars (report of 5 cases)].

Carcinoma arising from postburn scars is rare. We have encountered 5 patients suffering from this late complication of scars, accounting for 0.32% of 1563 admissions for late surgery after burn injuries. They were all males, with a mean age of 56 years. The mean latent period was 43.2 years, and it was apparently longer when the acute burn injury occurred earlier in life. The site of predilection was the lower extremity, and multiple biopsies of various sites of the lesion remained to be the measure of confirmation. Pathologically, they were all squamoon cell carcinoma, grade I in 4 cases and

Massive appendiceal mucinous neoplasm diagnosed after abdominal trauma: Pitfalls in imaging and diagnosis.

Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare tumor presenting typically with symptoms of acute appendicitis. A 33-year-old gentleman presented with abdominal fullness and discomfort secondary to abdominal trauma obtained during boxing training. Investigations with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and colonoscopy revealed a large cystic lesion in the ascending colon mesentery with unclear continuation with the appendix. There were no obvious features of malignancy. Laparoscopy revealed a large, firm mass connected to the appendix with enlarged lymph nodes, and the patie

[Anxio-depressive Syndrome -  Biopsychosocial Model of Supportive Care].

BACKGROUND: Acute stress in patients experiencing cancer diagnosis and the post-traumatic stress disorder in cancer survivors results in impaired overall quality of life mainly due to associated psychological and physical alterations, including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunctions, fatigue, pain, cachexia and others. Recent studies revealed a new insight into molecular mechanisms contributing to the development of cancer-related co morbidities. It has been shown that adverse psychosomatic reactions including cancer depression to emotional cancer distress result from

The Psychometric Properties of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Questionnaire (PCL-5) for Cancer Patients in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is known as a common chronic disease that many aspects of its diagnosis and treatment may manifest traumatic episodes and lead to the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with cancer. Avoidance symptoms in PTSD often delay individuals from seeking professional assistance. Therefore, the PTSD Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5th Edition or DSM-5 (PCL-5) can evaluate PTSD conceptually and psychometrically instead of avoidance responses. AIMS: Accordingly, this research aimed to explore the psychometric features of the PCL-5 P

Mother-child communication about possible cancer recurrence during childhood cancer survivorship.

OBJECTIVE: Providing opportunities to communicate about possible cancer recurrence may be adaptive for youth in remission, yet parents may experience difficulty guiding discussions related to fears of cancer recurrence (FCR). This study aimed to characterize mother-child discussions about potential cancer recurrence during post-treatment survivorship and to determine predictors of maternal communication. METHODS: Families (N = 67) were recruited after the child's initial cancer diagnosis (age 5-17 years) and mothers self-reported their distress (post-traumatic stress symptoms; PTSS). During s

Prevalence of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in parents of children with cancer: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: For parents, a diagnosis of cancer in their child is a traumatic experience. However, there is conflicting evidence about the risk of developing mental illness among parents following diagnosis. Our objective was to conduct a meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of mental illness in parents of children with cancer. METHODS: Four databases were searched to identify articles describing the prevalence of anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in parents of pediatric cancer patients. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data. Subgroup analyses

Heterogeneity of posttraumatic stress, depression, and fear of cancer recurrence in breast cancer survivors: a latent class analysis.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer survivors may demonstrate elevated psychological distress, which can also hinder adherence to survivorship care plans. Our goal was to study heterogeneity of behavioral health and functioning in breast cancer survivors, and identify both risk and protective factors to improve targets for wellness interventions. METHODS: Breast cancer survivors (n = 187) consented to complete self-reported psychological measures and to access their medical records. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify heterogeneous subpopulations based on levels of depression, post-traumatic

Traumatic pseudolipoma: herniation of buccal fat pad, a report of two cases.

Traumatic pseudolipoma is a term used to describe intra-oral herniation of the buccal fat pad. A tear of the buccinator muscle and buccal mucosa allows the buccal fat pad to extrude into the oral cavity. Initially, the lesion can suggest a more sinister cause, but a history of trauma, an absence of mass before the accident, anatomical site and fatty appearance should suggest a diagnosis of traumatic herniation of buccal fat pad. This injury is rare, but two cases presented to the authors' hospital over a period of 3 months.

Pancreatic pseudocyst caused by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for right renal pelvic calculi.

A 39-year-old white man with a history of right renal pelvic stones treated 1 year before by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, but with no history of major surgery, alcoholism, pancreatitis, hyperparathyroidism or trauma, was admitted, suffering from an abdominal mass. Abdominal and pelvic computed tomography revealed an enlarged pancreatic head (9 cm in transverse diameter) with, inside it, a heterogeneous, cyst-like structure, measuring 7 cm in diameter. It was suspected that this lesion was a cystic neoplasm and the patient underwent a proximal pancreaticoduodenectomy and a cholecystec

Intrahepatic Splenosis: A Rare Case.

BACKGROUND: Splenosis refers to the autotransplantation of splenic tissue in a heterotopic location throughout different anatomic compartments, such as the peritoneal and pelvic cavities and even the thoracic cavity. Intrahepatic splenosis is very rare and usually mistaken for a neoplasm. The lack of typical radiological features makes it difficult to distinguish splenosis from liver tumors. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old female patient presented with post-traumatic splenectomy and had a history of recurrent surgery afterward. There were no significant findings in the physical examination or lab

Current evidence on the prospective predictors and trajectories of posttraumatic growth and depreciation in adult women with breast cancer: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer remains a global health concern, with post-traumatic psychological changes, both positive and negative, during treatment and survivorship. This systematic review aimed to examine the prospective predictors of Posttraumatic Growth (PTG) and Posttraumatic Depreciation (PTD), as well as their temporal dynamics in women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were systematically searched on 31st January 2025, using a combination of terms and Boolean operators, following PRISMA guidelines. A narrative synthesis was conducted, classifying i

Post-traumatic stress symptoms in parents of adolescents hospitalized with Anorexia nervosa.

The current study was a planned secondary analysis to examine post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in parents of youth hospitalized for medical stabilization due to anorexia nervosa (AN). Questionnaires were administered to 47 parents (34 mothers, 13 fathers; 10 parental dyads) after admission; follow-up occurred at discharge and 4 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-discharge. PTSS were present in the majority of mothers (55.9%) and fathers (61.5%). PTSS were not associated with illness severity, but were associated with parental report of mood symptoms, avoidance, inflexibility, and symptom

[Traumatic and psychosocial distress in patients with acute tumors].

For patients, being diagnosed with cancer means being confronted with a life-threatening illness and can thus be considered a traumatic experience. This situation is compounded by the fact that having cancer is usually not an isolated event but is generally a long-term stressor. The aim of the present study was a) the assessment of psychotraumatic and comorbid distress in tumor patients both in the acute stage (T1) and over time (T2), b) the identification of possible protective factors, and c) the identification of risk factors for the development of a posttraumatic stress reaction (PTSR) fol
