INSM1 Is More Sensitive and Interpretable than Conventional Immunohistochemical Stains Used to Diagnose Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an extremely aggressive skin cancer that must be distinguished from other basaloid cutaneous neoplasms that have different treatments and prognoses. This is sometimes challenging in small shave specimens, crushed samples, lymph nodes, and core needle biopsies. Insulinoma-associated protein 1 (INSM1) immunohistochemistry is a sensitive nuclear marker of neuroendocrine differentiation. INSM1 staining was performed on 56 MCC (47 primary tumors, 9 nodal metastases), 50 skin control cases that included basal cell carcinomas, basaloid squamous cell carcinomas, Bowen di

Lymphocytes infiltrating primary cutaneous neoplasms selectively express the cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA).

The cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA) is the T-cell ligand for E-selectin and is involved in tissue selective migration of memory/effector T cells to chronic inflammatory sites in skin. Here, we examine the hypothesis that CLA is also involved in the local host immune response to cutaneous neoplasms. Eleven primary cutaneous melanomas, nine primary cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas, and 11 assorted neoplasms metastatic to cutaneous and noncutaneous sites were immunostained with anti-CLA (HECA-452), as well as antibodies directed against B cells (CD20), T/NK cells (CD43), and memor

[Pseudovascular squamous cell carcinoma].

The adenoid form of squamous cell carcinoma is a neoplasm that is characterized by the fact that it presents a pseudoglandular pattern in the histological study. The biological phenomenon that explains this histological pattern is acantholysis; when the latter is massive, the tumor may even mimic a vascular proliferation, and is known as pseudovascular squamous cell carcinoma. This tumor has the clinical characteristics of a squamous cell carcinoma, but histologically, it may mimic an angiosarcoma. Most cases of pseudovascular squamous cell carcinoma of the skin have a poor prognosis.

Papillary oncocytic cystadenoma of the parotid glands: a report of 2 cases with varied cytologic features.

BACKGROUND: Papillary cystadenoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm, and oncocytic change can be focal or marked. Papillary oncocytic cystadenoma has been reported mainly in the minor salivary glands and occasionally in the parotid glands. The cytologic features vary. CASES: A 26-year-old female presented with a 2.4-cm, cystic right parotid gland mass present for 4 months. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) showed cellular smears with sheets of oncocytic cells and some with micropapillary architecture. The diagnosis ofa neoplasm was rendered and excisional biopsy recommended. Oncocytic neoplasm was

Oral Tongue Spontaneous Tumor Regression after Biopsy: A Case Report and Genomic Profile.

Spontaneous regression of a neoplasm is a rare oncologic phenomenon. Certain neoplasms, such as melanomas and neuroblastomas, display this phenomenon. To date, spontaneous regression of oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas has been documented in only a handful of case reports. We present a novel case of spontaneous regression of an oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma following biopsy. We discuss the tumor's unique genetic profile, immune response to cancer, and review the literature on possible mechanisms of spontaneous regression. Small-volume persistent cancer in our patient reinforces that

Carcinoma and multiple lymphomas in one patient: establishing the diagnoses and analyzing risk factors.

Multiple malignancies may occur in the same patient, and a few reports describe cases with multiple hematologic and non-hematologic neoplasms. We report the case of a patient who showed the sequential occurrence of four different lymphoid neoplasms together with a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. A 62-year-old man with adenopathy was admitted to the hospital, and lymph node biopsy was positive for low-grade follicular lymphoma. He achieved a partial remission with chemotherapy. Two years later, a PET-CT scan showed a left hilar mass in the lung; biopsy showed a squamous cell carcinoma. Sim

Multicentric squamous cell carcinoma in situ resembling Bowen's disease in cats.

Multicentric squamous cell carcinoma in situ was studied in 12 cats (eight castrated males and four spayed females). The neoplasms occurred in middle-aged to old (mean age = 12 years) mixed-breed cats with a variety of hair-coat colors. The lesions were found in haired pigmented regions of the skin, including the trunk, limbs, feet, head, and neck, and were unrelated to exposure to sunlight. Lesions occurred at multiple sites in nine cats and at solitary sites in three cats and were from 0.5 cm to 3.0 cm in diameter, irregular, slightly elevated, plaque-like or papillated, and partially alopec

The promising role of Gelsolin expression to predict survival in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

INTRODUCTION: Gelsolin protein has important cellular functions, including cell motility and apoptosis. Altered gelsolin expression has been reported in several types of neoplasms, but clinicopathological features of gelsolin are currently unclear in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. OBJECTIVES: Our aim is to investigate the clinicopathological significance of gelsolin as a prognostic biomarker for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: Tissue specimens from 168 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were immunohistochemically assessed for the Gelsolin expression

Approach to small biopsies in the larynx.

Small biopsies in the larynx can make a definitive diagnosis challenging due to the sampling or tangential sectioning. The differential diagnosis can be divided into mucosal lesions (squamous papillomas, intraepithelial dysplasia, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma) or submucosal lesions (vocal cord polyps/nodules, amyloidosis, granular cell tumor, rhabdomyoma, neuroendocrine neoplasms, salivary gland tumors, and cartilaginous tumors). Diagnostic criteria (both morphologic and immunohistochemical) are reviewed to arrive at a diagnosis even on small biopsy.

Squamous breast cancer: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Squamous carcinoma of the breast is a rare neoplasm and should not be confused with spindle cell skin carcinoma which derives from the nipple. Differential diagnosis includes other primary (e.g. medullary) carcinomas where more or less extensive zones of typical or atypical squamous metaplasia are found. The pathogenesis of this neoplasm as well as its biological behavior is discussed in the light of personal experience. Literature data are reviewed.

Synchronous invasive squamous cell carcinoma and clear cell adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix: a different human papillomavirus status.

BACKGROUND: A multiple primary invasive carcinoma of the cervix is a rare condition and is seldom composed of squamous cell carcinoma and clear cell adenocarcinoma. CASE: A 47-year-old woman presented with contact bleeding. The anterior lip of the cervix revealed a 2.0-cm protruded mass. Preoperative pathological and imaging studies demonstrated the squamous cell carcinoma of the exocervix alone. Radical hysterectomy was performed on the diagnosis of stage 1B cervical cancer. Histological examination of the specimen manifested a coexisting invasive clear cell adenocarcinoma in the endocervix.

Verrucous carcinoma of the vagina.

Verrucous carcinoma of the vagina is a highly differentiated and rare variety of squamous-cell carcinoma. Two new cases are presented; a search for the literature revealed three other cases. This neoplasm is characterized by a warty verrucous pattern of growth of squamous epithelium. Histologically, this type of squamous-cell carcinoma is extremely well-differentiated, with minimal evidence of anaplasia of the cells. The neoplasm tends to grow slowly and to infiltrate, sometimes extensively, by pushing rather than by permeating the surrounding tissues. Surgical excision seems to provide the be

Pathology of Vulvar Neoplasms.

Carcinoma of the vulva is an uncommon malignant neoplasm (approximately one-fifth as frequent as cervical cancer) and represents 4% of all genital cancers in women. Approximately two-thirds of cases occur in women older than 60 years, and squamous cell carcinoma is the most common histologic type. Several different subtypes of squamous cell carcinoma have been described in the vulva; however, in terms of etiology, pathogenesis, and histologic features, most carcinomas belong to one of two categories: keratinizing squamous cell carcinomas associated with chronic inflammatory skin disorders, and

Aspiration biopsy cytology of primary cutaneous tumors.

Primary cutaneous neoplasms may undergo fine needle aspiration during the workup of patients with suspected metastatic disease. Such aspirates present a wide range of epithelial and nonepithelial proliferations that must be separated from more common metastatic deposits. The majority of primary cutaneous tumors are composed of squamous or basaloid cells that can be confused with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, primary cutaneous lymphomas and mesenchymal tumors morphologically overlap their more common systemic or metastatic counterparts in appearance. Both clinical and cytolog

Multiple Distinct Neoplasms in a North African Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus).

This paper describes the clinical and pathological features of 4 different tumors, located in the integumentary, digestive, and endocrine systems, presenting in a North African hedgehog (Atelerix algirus). A 3.5-year-old female hedgehog was presented with a cutaneous mass on the right flank. The lesion consisted of a well-differentiated dermal mast cell tumor with no recurrence and metastasis after complete surgical excision. Six months later, the hedgehog developed a mass in the left lower jaw, lethargy, anorexia, and progressive weight loss. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed swe

Human papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract.

The association of human papillomavirus with the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas has been better elucidated over the past 20 years. In this review article, we examine the role of the virus in the development of these tumors. We discuss the clinical and pathologic features of human papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Immunohistochemical findings and those of other ancillary techniques are also reviewed. We further review the prognosis and treatment of these tumors. Finally, a detailed discussion is provided regarding the differential di

Combination therapy for perianal squamous cell carcinoma in situ with imiquimod and photodynamic therapy.

Perianal squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) is a relatively rare intraepidermal neoplasm that has the potential to progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma. First-line treatment is surgical excision, though nonsurgical treatment modalities such as 5-aminolevulinic acid-based photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) and imiquimod also have been investigated for this neoplasm. Unfortunately, recurrences are known to occur after both surgical and nonsurgical monotherapies. We report a case of perianal SCCIS that was successfully treated with a novel combination of ALA-PDT and imiquimod.

Apatinib and S-1 combination therapy for the treatment of advanced head and neck neoplasms: Three case reports.

Apatinib, one of the novel oral antiangiogenic agents, shows survival benefits in treating advanced or metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma. However, its efficacy in treating advanced head and neck neoplasms has not been reported. Herein, three elderly men with advanced head and neck neoplasms were treated with apatinib and S-1. Their initial diagnoses were hypopharyngeal carcinoma, metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck, and squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus. All patients underwent repeated chemotherapy but developed disease progression. As they refused radiotherapy due

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Sigmoid Colon.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the colon is rarely found proximal to the anal canal. We report a case of an 81-year-old woman who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung without metastasis and BSCC of the sigmoid with differing histologic findings suggesting that these tumors were separate primary neoplasms. SCC of the colon has a dismal prognosis. Surgery is the primary method of treatment when feasible, in addition to chemotherapeutic agents.
