BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm showing nerve sheath differentiation, usually arising in large nerves of the trunk and extremities. Primary location in the parotid gland is rare. We describe fine needle aspiration (FNA) findings in a case of MPNST in the parotid gland. Differential diagnostic problems encountered in interpretation are discussed.
CASE: A 39-year-old man underwent FNA of a well-circumscribed, painless, mobile mass of the parotid gland. Smears were cellular, with clusters of tightly packed spindle or oval cells arra

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms that rarely involve the central nervous system (CNS). Their extradural occurrence in the spinal region is exceptionally rare and often mimics more common lesions such as nerve sheath tumors, posing a diagnostic challenge. A case is presented of a young female patient with a gradually progressive swelling in the lower back associated with bilateral lower limb pain. Initial radiological findings suggested a benign neural lesion. Advanced imaging revealed an extradural mass arising from the thoracic spine with features suggestive o

Scrotal tumors of nerve origin are extremely rare and occur mostly in the extratesticular tissues of scrotum, such as the spermatic cord and epididymis. A systematic search of the literature in PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar databases concerning intrascrotal nerve tumors was performed by 2 independent investigators. The systematic search retrieved 45 male adults, with a mean age of included patients at 43.9 ± 18.8 years. The majority of nerve tumors were extra-testicular (86.7%), and only 13.3% originated from the testis. Out of that, 51.1% of neoplasms were histologically proved as schwa

The authors report a case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor arising in an adrenal ganglioneuroma in an adult. This is the first such case occurring in the absence of a history of childhood neuroblastoma treated with radiation, and provides evidence that such a transformation can occur spontaneously. The neoplasm demonstrated a highly malignant biologic behavior with rapid growth, local recurrence, and metastasis.

Neurilemomas are benign usually encapsulated nerve sheath tumors derived from the Schwann cells. These tumors commonly arise from the cranial nerves as acoustic neurinomas but they are extremely rare in the pelvis and the retroperitoneal area (less than 0.5% of reported cases), unless they are combined with von Recklinghausen disease (type 1 neurofibromatosis). We report the case of a 58-year-old female with pelvic schwannoma, 6.5 × 5.5 cm in size, in the right parametrium. This is the first case reported in the literature. Based on the rarity of this tumor and in order to ensure optimum treat

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve (GAN) tumors, also known as plexosarcomas, are a rare distinct subtype of the gastrointestinal stromal tumors. These tumors are usually histologically low-grade, epithelioid or spindle-cell neoplasms that can be distinguished from the other gastrointestinal stromal tumors on the basis of their unique ultrastructural features. A 66-year-old female presented with a histologically high-grade sarcoma of the small bowel. Ultrastructural studies showed features of a GAN tumor. The light microscopic and ultrastructural features are described. The tumor cells gave stro

The authors describe a patient with recurrent perineurioma arising in the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal forearm and extending along the forearm fascia. Soft tissue perineurioma is a rare, originally benign peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm arising from the perineurium, a protective cell barrier surrounding the individual fascicles in peripheral nerves. Perineurioma has only recently been recognized as an entity distinct from other nerve sheath tumors, such as schwannoma and neurofibroma, with unique morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunoreactive features. The recurrent tumor had converted

Patients with the autosomal dominant tumor susceptibility syndrome neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) commonly develop plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) that subsequently transform into highly aggressive malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Understanding the process by which a PN transforms into an MPNST would be facilitated by the availability of genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models that accurately replicate the PN-MPNST progression seen in humans with NF1. Unfortunately, GEM models with Nf1 ablation do not fully recapitulate this process. This led us to develop P0-GGFβ3 mice, a GE

Orbital neoplasms in adults may be categorized on the basis of location and histologic type. Imaging features of these lesions often reflect their tissue composition. Cavernous malformations (also known as cavernous hemangiomas), although not true neoplasms, are the most common benign adult orbital tumor. They typically appear as a well-circumscribed, ovoid intraconal mass on cross-sectional images. Lymphoma, which may be primary or secondary to systemic disease, is the most prevalent orbital neoplasm in older adults (≥60 years of age). Choroidal melanoma is the most common primary adult ocula

Patients who survive Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at increased risk of secondary neoplasms (SNs). A wide variety of SNs have been reported, including leukemias, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and solid tumors, specifically breast and thyroid cancers. Herein we report subsequent neoplasms in four patients with HL receiving chemoradiotherapy. It is interesting that three SNs, fibrosarcoma, thyroid carcinoma, and retrobulbar meningioma, were observed in the radiation area in one of our patients. Benign neoplasms originating from the neuronal sheath are usually found along the distribution of the cranial nerves and in the flexor surfaces of the upper and lower extremities. We herein present a case of a 65-year-old man with a schwannoma located in the inguinal canal, which presented as an irreducible hernia. This is the first reported case in the English literature of a schwannoma with such a presentation.

AIMS: Primary localised pleural neoplasms are a rare group of thoracic tumours, with solitary fibrous tumour representing the most frequently encountered entity. Two cases of localised pleural neurofibromas involving the pleura are described.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patients were both female: 78 and 29 years of age. In the former a pleural-based lesion was identified on a chest radiograph after she presented with shoulder pain. The second patient was known to have neurofibromatosis type I, and the pleural lesion was found incidentally during excision of a metastatic malignant peripheral nerv

Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumours comprise a pathologically varied group of tumours owing to the origin of the tumour and effect on neurovascular structures, leading to a myriad of clinical manifestations. These tumours are benign, sluggish, with a low potency for malignant transformation. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNST) are a malignant neoplasm of the peripheral nerves. It may develop from a pre-existing neurofibroma or may arise sporadically. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours have a poor overall prognosis owing to their aggressive nature and limited therapeutic o

BACKGROUND: A hybrid nerve sheath tumor is a biphasic, benign neoplasm of peripheral nerve sheaths, consisting of combinations of neurofibroma, schwannoma, or perineurioma. These tumors were recognized only recently, in 2013; they commonly occur sporadically but rarely with syndromic associations, such as neurofibromatosis syndrome, Carney complex, and schwannomatosis. With an occurrence of 1 in every 33,000 individuals, neurofibromatosis type 2 is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas. Herein we report a serendipitous occurrence of a hybrid nerv

Soft tissue neoplasms of the hand are rare in general and even more uncommon in children. The most commonly considered diagnoses include ganglion, inclusion cyst, lipoma, subcutaneous foreign body granuloma, and tendon sheath xanthoma. Aside from pressure sensitivity, masses on the palmar aspect of the hand are often asymptomatic. The case reported here identifies a primary neural neoplasm (neurilemmoma) that involves a small peripheral nerve in the hand of a twelve-year-old child. The patient had no neurologic symptoms and illustrates the need to include neurilemmomas in the differential diag

Patients with large congenital melanocytic nevus (LCMN) have a high risk of developing malignant melanoma (MM) and other malignancies. We report a case of a mesenchymal malignancy that best fit the diagnosis of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor and subsequent development of a MM developing from a LCMN. There are no previous reports of a second primary malignant neoplasm arising from a LCMN.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a benign, self-limiting lesion characterized by heterotopic ossification that can mimic malignancy both radiographically and histologically. Non-traumatic MO is particularly challenging to diagnose, especially when arising adjacent to major neurovascular structures. Recent studies have identified ubiquitin-specific peptidase 6 (USP6) gene rearrangements in a subset of MO, linking it to a family of transient fibroblastic/myofibroblastic neoplasms. We present a 21-year-old female who presented with progressive right lower extremity pain and weakness without a history

Orbital spindle cell tumors with neural differentiation represent an uncommon and diagnostically challenging entity in clinical practice. We report the case of an 82-year-old man with a history of treated rectal adenocarcinoma, who presented with progressive orbital pain and right-sided proptosis. Computed tomography revealed a soft tissue mass located at the orbital apex, without evidence of bone erosion. Orbital exenteration was performed, and histopathological examination demonstrated an infiltrative high-grade spindle cell neoplasm with a fascicular growth pattern, moderate pleomorphism, a

Acoustic neuromas are benign neoplasms of the brain composed of Schwann cells, arising most commonly from the nerve sheath of the vestibular division of the VIII cranial nerve. They usually manifest as unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, and unsteadiness. Some patients may present atypically with symptoms like orofacial pain, hemifacial numbness, sudden onset hearing loss, or trigeminal neuralgia. Here we report an interesting case of acoustic neuroma in which the patient presented with unilateral facial numbness and tooth pain. Persistent atypical symptoms should always raise clinical suspicio
