Choroid plexus neoplasms are rare epithelial tumors of the central nervous system. A carcinoma of the choroid plexus occurred in a child from a family with the breast cancer-sarcoma syndrome (Li-Fraumeni or SBLA syndrome), an inherited condition characterized by the development of diverse neoplasms (sarcoma, breast cancer, brain tumors, leukemia, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and others). Choroid plexus carcinomas were identified in two kindreds previously reported with the syndrome. The literature contains reports of choroid plexus neoplasms occurring in families and in individuals with multipl

Direct or incidental exposure of the nervous system to therapeutic irradiation carries the risk of symptomatic neurologic injury. Central nervous system toxicity from radiation includes focal cerebral necrosis, neurocognitive deficits, and less commonly cerebrovascular disease, myelopathy, or the occurrence of a radiation-induced neoplasm. Brachial or lumbosacral plexopathy are the most common syndromes of radiation toxicity affecting the peripheral nervous system. This article focuses on the clinical features, diagnosis, and management options for patients with radiation neurotoxicity.

The clinical presentation and imaging studies of central nervous system tuberculosis are often indistinguishable from those of patients with malignant neoplasms or metastatic disease. Biopsies may be necessary to distinguish tuberculomas from other intracranial lesions such as pyogenic abscesses or necrotic tumors.

Tubulin is the major constituent protein of microtubules. In mammals, there are seven beta-tubulins and six alpha-tubulins. Each beta-tubulin isotype has a unique tissue distribution. The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution of tubulin beta II in normal and neoplastic human tissues with immunohistochemical techniques. We obtained normal tissues from 33 cases (8 fetuses, 17 neonates, 3 children and 5 adults) and 121 samples of neoplastic tissue from surgical specimens or at autopsy. Immunohistochemical staining for tubulin beta II was performed using a monoclonal antibody, KNY

INTRODUCTION: Increases in computed tomography (CT) use may not always reflect clinical need or improve outcomes. This study aimed to demonstrate how population level data can be used to identify variations in care between patient groups, by analysing system-level changes in CT use around the diagnosis of new conditions.
METHODS: Retrospective repeated cross-sectional observational study using West Australian linked administrative records, including 504,723 adults diagnosed with different conditions in 2006, 2012 and 2015. For 90 days pre/post diagnosis, CT use (any and 2+ scans), effective d

Precocious puberty due to disorders of the nervous system is uncommon and may arise from neoplastic lesions situated in the pineal gland, hypothalamus, tuber cinereum, and midbrain. Most of these neoplasms maintain connections with or are attached to the central nervous system. Rarely, however, tumors lying free within the meninges may be associated with precocious puberty. A patient with this rare form of precocity who was found to have a parasellar ganglionic hamartoma is described in this report. Her post-operative course was marked by a reversal in her sexual precocity and a subsequent arr

The dried drop of blood plasma and serum was first described by Białowas in 1967. The dry drop as a method for diagnosis of neoplasms was introduced in 1984 by Hungarian authors from Cancer Research Group. The aim of our investigations was to estimate the usefulness of this method in diagnostic of central nervous system's tumours and lung cancers. We worked out our own modification of dry drop test, i.e., we used the blood plasma instead the blood serum. In 93% of neoplasms the result of test was positive (in 92% of neoplasms of central nervous system and in 83% of lung cancers). In the contro

In this study, 30-day-old male Sprague-Dawley rats, were inoculated intraperitoneally with a single dose of 45, 90, and 180 mg/kg of N-ethyl-N-Nitrosourea (ENU). A wide spectrum of neoplasms occurred. The most common tumors were those of the mammary gland and of the nervous system. Although the incidence of mammary tumors was highest in the two high-dose groups (90 and 180 mg/kg ENU), the incidence of neurogenic tumors was highest in the 45 mg/kg dose group. Mammary tumor development led to early death and precluded development of tumors of the nervous system, which require a longer latency pe

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system lymphoma is a rare, malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can arise in the brain, spinal cord, eye, leptomeninges, or cranial nerves. Primary central nervous system lymphoma is rare, accounting for 2-6% of all primary brain neoplasms and 1-2% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and it usually presents as a solitary lesion. Cerebellar involvement is present in only 9% of cases. We present an unusual case of primary central nervous system lymphoma presenting as multiple lesions in the cerebellum in an immunocompetent host.

Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSLs) rarely exhibit intratumoral hemorrhage. The differential diagnosis of hemorrhagic neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) currently includes metastatic carcinomas, melanomas, choriocarcinomas, oligodendrogliomas, and glioblastomas. Here we present the clinical, radiological, pathological, and molecular genetic features of six cases of PCNSL associated with intratumoral hemorrhage. The median age of patients was 75 years, with male predominance. While conventional PCNSLs were associated with low cerebral blood volume (CBV), perfusion magne

Neoplasms that arise in the peripheral (e.g., carotid body tumors, neuroblastomas, pheochromocytomas) or central (gangliocytomas, medulloblastomas) nervous system express a number of neuron-specific gene products. Presumably, these tumors are derived from precursor cells that are or have the potential to develop into neurons or neuron-like cells. This report provides a critical examination of the hypothesis that cytoskeletal proteins of normal neurons, in particular the neuron-specific class of intermediate filaments (neurofilaments), are present but are abnormal in neoplasms derived from neur

The adrenal glands are vital in the organism's response to environmental stress. The outer cortex releases steroid hormones: glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and sex hormones, which are crucial to metabolism, inflammatory reactions and fluid homeostasis. The medulla is different developmentally, functionally and structurally. It co-releases catecholamines (primarily adrenaline and to some extent noradrenaline) as well as peptides by the all-or-none process of exocytosis from chromaffin granules, to aid in blood pressure and blood flow regulation, with regulated increments during the activat

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by multiple neoplasms of the central and peripheral nervous system associated with ocular abnormalities. Leptomeningeal angiomatosis has not been described with this tumour predisposition syndrome. This report documents an unusual association of leptomeningeal angiomatosis in a case of NF2.

A group of central nervous system neoplasms, previously known as reticulum cell sarcoma or microglioma, and recently classified as malignant lymphoma, histiocytic type, not infrequently occur in patients with immunodeficiency, either primary or induced by immunosuppressant drugs. The authors report such a neoplasm in a patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura immunosuppressed with azathioprine and prednisone. The neoplasm was studied with several immunological techniques and by electron microscopy. The neoplasm had B lymphocyte membrane markers and showed plasmacytic differentiation. T

The age-related incidence of spontaneously occurring neoplasms and degenerative diseases in the F344 inbred rat strain was established from the histologic examination of tissues from 160 male and 192 female rats kept throughout their natural life-span. The most common neoplasms were leukemias (25%), mammary tumors (females, 40.6%; males, 23.1%), pituitary adenomas (females, 35.9%; males, 23.8%), and testicular interstitial cell tumors (males, 85%). Various less common neoplasms were observed: thyroid interstitial cell tumors, adrenocortical adenomas, carcinomas of the genitourinary tract, repr

Postmortem findings in 241 equids admitted to a teaching hospital that were at least 15 years old at autopsy were reviewed (1) to determine disease prevalence, (2) to compare the cause of death (or euthanasia) in equids 15 to 19 years of age (n = 116) with that in equids ≥20 years of age (n = 125), and (3) to catalog coexisting lesions in equids with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Breed and sex were evenly distributed between the age groups. Death or euthanasia was attributed to disease of the digestive system (41.5%), pituitary gland (12.9%), locomotor system (10.0%), nervous s

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although sporadic primary neoplasms account for the majority of nervous system tumors, familial nervous system tumor syndromes are important and clinically relevant conditions for the neurologist to understand. This article reviews common inherited nervous system tumor syndromes including neurofibromatosis type 1, neurofibromatosis type 2, schwannomatosis, tuberous sclerosis complex, and von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. The epidemiology, genetics, approach to diagnosis, neurologic and nonneurologic manifestations, and management options are reviewed.

The notion of symptomatic epilepsy was historically reviewed. The structural etiologies of epilepsy include cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, neoplasms, and traumatic brain injuries. Infections are the most common etiology worldwide. Metabolic epilepsy directly results from a known or presumed metabolic disorder. Immune epilepsy occurs because of autoimmune-mediated central nervous system inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diagnoses encompass a wide spectrum of conditions. The authors review one institution's CSF cytology results over an 11-year period.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective study of 5951 CSF specimens generated between 1985 and 1995. Specimens from pediatric patients (<19 years of age) from the same time period were separately identified.
RESULTS: A total of 5561 adult and 390 pediatric CSF specimens were interpreted. A diagnosis of "negative for malignant cells" was assigned in 5171 (93%) of the adult cases and in 351 (90%) of the pediatric cases. Specific i
