Geometry-based optimization of radio-frequency coils for powering neuroprosthetic implants.

Biomedical implants powered by inductive links have several advantages over batteries or percutaneous power linkages. The inductive link power transfer efficiency must be optimized to realize the full advantage over other power delivery technologies. Optimization is also important to reduce the electromagnetic radiation exposure, reduce secondary heating effects and improve power efficiency, so that large primary side storage batteries are not required. Geometric constraints, i.e., size and shape, of biomedical implants are a primary concern of device design. In this paper, we present a novel

Localization of deep brain stimulation electrodes via metal artifacts in CT images.

In Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), the location of implanted electrodes in the brain has direct influence on the therapeutic effect of the treatment. This work deals with estimating the position of the implanted DBS electrodes from the images registered by X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scanners. A technique named junction method that takes advantage of the streak artifacts created by the metal parts of the electrodes in CT images is proposed for this purpose. To start with, the brain image is extracted by defining a brain mask. Next, the edges are intensified by applying a Gaussian convolution

Stretchable and neuromorphic transistors for pain perception and sensitization emulation.

Pain perception nociceptors (PPN), an important type of sensory neuron, are capable of sending out alarm signals when the human body is exposed to destructive stimuli. Simulating the human ability to perceive the external environment and spontaneously avoid injury is a critical function of neural sensing of artificial intelligence devices. The demand for developing artificial PPN has subsequently increased. However, due to the application scenarios of bionic electronic devices such as human skin, electronic prostheses, and robot bodies, where a certain degree of surface deformation constantly

On the use of longitudinal intrafascicular peripheral interfaces for the control of cybernetic hand prostheses in amputees.

Significant strides have been recently made to develop highly sensorized cybernetic prostheses aimed at restoring sensorimotor limb functions to those who have lost them because of a traumatic event (amputation). In these cases, one of the main goals is to create a bidirectional link between the artificial devices (e.g., robotic hands, arms, or legs) and the nervous system. Several human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are currently used to this aim. Among them, interfaces with the peripheral nervous system and in particular longitudinal intrafascicular electrodes can be a promising solution able to

Design and Testing of an Emg-Controlled Semi-Active Knee Prosthesis.

Affordable, sensor-driven lower-limb prostheses remain scarce in middle-income health systems. We report the design, numerical justification, and bench validation of a semi-active transfemoral prosthesis featuring surface electromyography (EMG) control and inertial sensing for low-resource deployment. The mechanical architecture combines a titanium-aluminum-carbon composite frame (total mass 0.87 kg; parts cost < USD 400) with topology optimization (SIMP) to minimize weight while preserving stiffness. Finite-element analyses (critical load 2.94 kN) confirmed structural safety (yield safety fac

Muscle and Motoneuron Synergies in Biomimetic and Non-Biomimetic 3-DoF Tasks.

Coordinated control of hand and wrist movements requires precise and simultaneous activation of multiple muscles and joints. To facilitate this task, the central nervous system is thought to organize the neural control to muscles into low-dimensional modules, also known as synergies. While motor adaptation research has primarily focused on muscle-level synergies, recent studies suggest that motoneurons may form distinct synergistic groups, pointing to a more fundamental layer of neural organization. This neural perspective on movement control is particularly relevant for myoelectric prostheses

Neural modifications of transtibial prosthesis (TTP) users: an event-related potentials study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with lower-limb amputations are highly dependent upon prostheses to perform daily activities and adapt to environmental changes. Transtibial prosthesis (TTP) users in particular, experience greater challenges in motor control and demonstrate impaired cognitive functions, when compared to able-bodied persons. The identification of neural mechanisms underlying adaptation or compensation may contribute to the development and expansion of rehabilitation strategies. OBJECTIVE: To examine neuroplasticity changes in transtibial amputees by analyzing event-related potentials (

Electrical devices for visual restoration.

Given the rising number of patients with blindness from macular, optic nerve, and visual pathway disease, there is considerable interest in the potential of electrical stimulation devices to restore vision. Electrical devices for restoration of visual function can be grouped into three categories: (1) visual prostheses whose goal is to bypass damaged areas and directly activate downstream intact portions of the visual pathway; (2) electric field stimulation whose goal is to activate endogenous transcriptional and molecular signaling pathways to promote neuroprotection and neuro-regeneration; a

The Need to Work Arm in Arm: Calling for Collaboration in Delivering Neuroprosthetic Limb Replacements.

Over the last few decades there has been a push to enhance the use of advanced prosthetics within the fields of biomedical engineering, neuroscience, and surgery. Through the development of peripheral neural interfaces and invasive electrodes, an individual's own nervous system can be used to control a prosthesis. With novel improvements in neural recording and signal decoding, this intimate communication has paved the way for bidirectional and intuitive control of prostheses. While various collaborations between engineers and surgeons have led to considerable success with motor control and pa

Restoring vestibular function during natural self-motion: Progress and challenges.

The vestibular system is integral to behavior; the loss of peripheral vestibular function leads to disabling consequences, such as blurred vision, dizziness, and unstable posture, severely limiting activities of daily living. Fortunately, the vestibular system's well-defined peripheral structure and well-understood encoding strategies offer unique opportunities for developing sensory prostheses to restore vestibular function. While these devices show promising results in both animal models and implanted patients, substantial room for improvement remains. Research from an engineering perspectiv

Cortical neuroprosthesis-mediated functional ipsilateral control of locomotion in rats with spinal cord hemisection.

Control of voluntary limb movement is predominantly attributed to the contralateral motor cortex. However, increasing evidence suggests the involvement of ipsilateral cortical networks in this process, especially in motor tasks requiring bilateral coordination, such as locomotion. In this study, we combined a unilateral thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) with a cortical neuroprosthetic approach to investigate the functional role of the ipsilateral motor cortex in rat movement through spared contralesional pathways. Our findings reveal that in all SCI rats, stimulation of the ipsilesional motor

A novel Microchannel Electrode Array: towards bioelectronic medical interfacing of small peripheral nerves.

Bioelectronic medicine is an emerging field that relies on electrical signals to modulate complex neuronal circuits, particularly in the peripheral nervous system, as an alternative to drug-enabled therapeutics. Small autonomic nerves are one of the targets in this field, however, interfacing peripheral nerves smaller than 300 μm remains a challenge. Here we report the development of a Microchannel Electrode Array (DCEA) capable of interfacing nerve fascicles as small as 50-300μm. The current μCEA records and stimulates from 28 channels and is designed for easy implantation and removal, bearin

Neuroprosthetic Speech: The Ethical Significance of Accuracy, Control and Pragmatics.

Neuroprosthetic speech devices are an emerging technology that can offer the possibility of communication to those who are unable to speak. Patients with 'locked in syndrome,' aphasia, or other such pathologies can use covert speech-vividly imagining saying something without actual vocalization-to trigger neural controlled systems capable of synthesizing the speech they would have spoken, but for their impairment. We provide an analysis of the mechanisms and outputs involved in speech mediated by neuroprosthetic devices. This analysis provides a framework for accounting for the ethical signific

Swine Pudendal Nerve as a Model for Neuromodulation Studies to Restore Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction.

Lower urinary tract dysfunction, such as incontinence or urinary retention, is one of the leading consequences of neurological diseases. This significantly impacts the quality of life for those affected, with implications extending not only to humans but also to clinical veterinary care. Having motor and sensory fibers, the pudendal nerve is an optimal candidate for neuromodulation therapies using bidirectional intraneural prostheses, paving the way towards the restoration of a more physiological urination cycle: bladder state can be detected from recorded neural signals, then an electrical cu

Improved myoelectric prosthesis control accomplished using multiple nerve transfers.

BACKGROUND: The control of shoulder-level disarticulation prostheses is significantly more difficult than that of prostheses for more distal amputations. Amputees have significant difficulties coordinating the separate functions of prosthetic shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand/hook components. The user must lock one joint at a particular position in space before subsequently moving a different joint. METHODS: A patient with bilateral humeral disarticulations after an electrical injury underwent a novel nerve transfer procedure designed to improve the control of a myoelectric prosthesis. The med

New Approach toward Laser-Assisted Modification of Biocompatible Polymers Relevant to Neural Interfacing Technologies.

We report on a new approach toward a laser-assisted modification of biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomers relevant to the fabrication of stretchable multielectrode arrays (MEAs) devices for neural interfacing technologies. These applications require high-density electrode packaging to provide a high-resolution integrating system for neural stimulation and/or recording. Medical grade PDMS elastomers are highly flexible with low Young's modulus < 1 MPa, which are similar to soft tissue (nerve, brain, muscles) among the other known biopolymers, and can easily adjust to the soft tis

Development of artificial neural network-based algorithms for the classification of bileaflet mechanical heart valve sounds.

OBJECTIVES: As is true for all mechanical prostheses, bileaflet heart valves are prone to thrombus formation; reduced hemodynamic performance and embolic events can occur as a result. Prosthetic valve thrombosis affects the power spectra calculated from the phonocardiographic signals corresponding to prosthetic closing events. Artificial neural network-based classifiers are proposed for automatically and noninvasively assessing valve functionality and detecting thrombotic formations. Further studies will be directed toward an enlarging data set, extending the investigated frequency range, and
