Cervical neurilemmoma may originate from any nerve sheath tissue in the neck including the vagus nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve, brachial plexus, sympathetic trunk and cervical spine. We report an unusual case of a dumbbell-shaped neurilemmoma arising from the cervical spinal roots in a patient who complained of having had a neck mass for several months. Computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dumbbell-shaped tumour extending from the C4 spinal level through the intervertebral foramen into the right parapharyngeal space. Decompression surgery was performed first via

A 30-year-old woman presented with dilated episcleral vessels in the right eye which were found to be associated with an underlying ciliary body tumour. Contact lens examination, transpupillary transillumination, ultrasonography, computerised tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and fine needle aspiration biopsy produced apparently conflicting and inconclusive results, and the eye was enucleated. Light and electron microscopy showed the lesion to be a neurilemmoma (schwannoma), of which very few cases have been reported. The clinical and pathological features are described and discussed.

BACKGROUND: Delicate enucleation of neurilemmoma preserves most of nerve fascicles and causes minimal nerve function impairment. Accurate preoperative diagnosis of neurilemmoma is based on clinical findings and image studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between November 2003 and February 2013, operations for the treatment of neurilemmoma were performed on 14 patients (12 men and 2 women) at our institution. The image studies in this series were collected. The tumor mass was approached by splitting the epineurium. In a few cases, enucleation of the neurilemmoma caused some fascicles loss, but recon

A 56 year-old female was pointed out an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray film for the lung cancer screening study. Chest X-ray film showed a round mass shadow at the right superior mediastinum. Chest CT scan revealed the mass was in the paravertebral area abutting on the 2nd thoracic vertebral body and had extended into the intervertebral foramen. Preoperative diagnosis was a dumb-bell-like neurogenic tumor. Operation was carried out by posterior approach in the prone position. At first thoracotomy was done by removing the paravertebral portion of the 2nd and 3rd ribs, and then hemilaminectomy w

Thoracic tumors are unusual and tend to occur in the posterior mediastinum. A case of anterior thoracic neurilemmoma is presented, with plain film, computed tomographic, and pathologic correlation. Diagnosis of chest wall masses, including the role of computed tomography, is discussed, along with the significance of calcification in these lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Intraoral neurilemmomas (schwannoma) are rare, even rarer are intraosseous ones, and the rarest are the maxillary neurilemmomas. Going by the literature only 5 cases of maxillary neurilemomas are reported till now. Neurilemmomas are benign tumours of nerve sheath origin. Approximately 30% arise in head and neck region, of these 1-12% arise intraorally mainly involving tongue.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here we report two cases of maxillary neurilemmoma, one in a 9 year old girl and second one in a 27 year old female, both involving the lateral surface of maxilla on right side. Both t

Cervical vagal neurilemmomas are rare, usually asymptomatic, slow-growing tumours and defined as a benign, encapsulated neoplasm that arises in the nerve fibre. Magnetic resonant imaging (MRI) plays a central role in diagnosing vagal nerve neoplasm and in fact, provides important pre-operative information useful in planning optimal surgical treatment. A rare case of giant neurilemmoma is presented with a large swelling in the right side of the neck associated with breathlessness and paroxysmal cough. X-ray chest revealed large homogenous opacity in apical area of the right lung extending into

Schwannoma, or neurilemmoma, is a benign nerve sheath tumor most commonly located in the soft tissue. Occasionally, Schwannomas involve osseous structures. Involvement of two adjacent long bones was not found in a review of the English language medical literature. We present the case of a neurilemmoma affecting both the distal fibula and tibia. Although rare, intraosseous neurilemmoma should be included on the differential diagnosis of painful, radiographically benign-appearing lesions arising in long bones.

Neurilemmoma of the glans penis is rare, and no imaging findings have been reported. A case of neurilemmoma of the glans penis is presented. Ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined small mass in the glans penis. The mass appeared hypoechoic on gray-scale US and hypervascular on color Doppler US. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed high signal intensity of the mass on a T2-weighted image and strong enhancement on a contrast-enhanced T1-weighted image.

We report the features of a central neurilemmoma in the mandible of a patient having an inflammatory apical dental (radicular) cyst in the same region. A 29-year-old woman complained of numbness on the right side of the lower lip of 3 months duration and noted following endodontic therapy to the right mandibular first molar tooth. Panoramic radiography revealed a bilocular radiolucency in the right body of the mandible. Excisional biopsy was performed. The histopathology revealed neurilemmoma of the mandible in concurrence with inflammatory apical dental (radicular) cyst. No recurrence was det

Two cases of deep-seated neurilemmoma that arose from plantar branches of the posterior tibial nerve and caused chronic heel pain are described. At the initial examination, one case was misdiagnosed as tarsal tunnel syndrome and the other was overlooked as plantar fasciitis; both cases were treated for long periods prior to operation. Deep-seated neurilemmomas in the foot can easily be overlooked and misdiagnosed as tarsal tunnel syndrome or plantar fasciitis because of the rarity, absence of palpable mass, and similarity of symptoms to those of other frequently encountered foot disorders. Neurilemmoma (schwannoma) is a benign, encapsulated perineural tumor of neuroectodermal derivation that originates from the Schwann cells of the neural sheath of motor and sensitive peripheral nerves; the etiology is still unknown. The tumor is normally solitary, smooth-surfaced, slow growing and generally asymptomatic. It may develop at any age and there is no gender predilection. Head and neck are one of the most frequent localizations, but intraoral development is quite uncommon. In this area the mobile portion of the tongue, and in a decreasing order, the palate, the cheek mucosa, the lip

A total of 1,271 neurilemmoma occurring in 1,202 Japanese patients were reviewed, classifying into seven categories: ordinary (932), degenerated (238), cellular (19), plexiform (35), pigmented (2), myxomatous (16) and organoid (30) types. The present clinicopathologic study revealed that some of these types possessed distinguishing characteristics. Tumors of both degenerated and cellular types usually occurred in the deep soft tissues and were larger in size than tumors of ordinary type. Degenerated type tumors had longer duration before surgery than other type tumors in average, and one of th

A 48-year-old black female had a 1-year history of increasing proptosis and headache. Sinus films and CT scan demonstrated an expansive soft tissue mass in the right frontal-ethmoid sinus with lateral displacement of the medial orbital wall, consistent with a mucocele. Resection revealed a solid tumor which was identified pathologically as a neurilemmoma. To our knowledge, this is the first published report of a frontal-ethmoid neurilemmoma presenting solely with proptosis, and also mimicking a mucocele.

Most sialolithiasis occurs in the submandibular glands, which are highly related to the anatomy and secretory function of the submandibular glands. The authors report an 18-year-old patient with multiple submandibular gland duct stones combined with submandibular neurilemmoma. The course of diagnosis and treatment is highlighted, and the causes of the formation of multiple stones in this patient are analyzed.

It seems that schwannomas of the tongue base originate from branches of the glossopharyngeal, vagus, or hypoglossal nerves. Additionally, complete trans-oral surgical excision is an efficient method to remove them.

Neurilemmoma is a benign neurogenic tumour arising from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath, which is commonly seen in women in the 5th decade. It rarely arises in the retroperitoneum, being more common in the head and neck region and extremities. Ancient variety of schwannoma is a long-standing tumour, is seen in the middle age and elderly age groups, and is associated with secondary degenerative changes. Herein, we report a case of benign retroperitoneal paravertebral ancient neurilemmoma occurring in a young male adult.
