[Neuroendocrine system of the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract: origin and development].

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP NETs) originate from the neuroendocrine cells through the gastrointestinal tract and endocrine pancreas. The embryologic development of the pancreas is a complex process that begins with the "stem cell" that come from the endodermus. These cells go through two phases: in the first transition the "stem cell" differentiates in exocrine and endocrine cells. This process is regulated by transcription factors such as Pdx1 ("insulin promoter factor 1"), Hlxb6 and SOX9. In the second transition the neuroendocrine cell differentiates in the 5 cell typ

The immuno-endocrine component in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) may be regarded as a disease in which the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, its etiologic agent, is engaged both in protection and pathology. Different T-lymphocyte subsets are involved in the immune response against M. tuberculosis, but production of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by T cells seems to be fundamental for disease control. Th1-type cytokine responses predominate in patients with mild or moderate forms of pulmonary TB, whereas the production of Th2-type cytokines prevails in the severe disease. Since the immune response fails to definitely eradicate th

Absence of subcommissural organ in the cerebral aqueduct of congenital hydrocephalus spontaneously occurring in MT/HokIdr mice.

The midbrains of pups with congenital hydrocephalus spontaneously occurring in MT/HokIdr mice were histologically examined. The subcommissural organ (SCO) and the posterior commissure were completely absent in the hydrocephalic brain. The cerebral aqueduct in the hydrocephalic brain was never completely stenosed, though it was somewhat narrowed in its middle region as compared with that in the normal brain. A possible interrelationship between an absence of SCO and a cause of congenital hydrocephalus is discussed.

Acupuncture and immunomodulation.

Acupuncture is a well-known form of Asian medical treatment and it is used not only as an effective curative method but also to prevent illness and maintain health. It is used for the production of analgesic effect; stress related physical-mental disorders and homeostasis. Electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation, an application of electrical current on acupuncture needles, is one of the most popular types of this traditional therapy. In recent years, intensive studies have been carried out to explain the underlying mechanisms of the efficacy of acupuncture. An increase in the release of endogen op

Are There Connections between the Neuroendocrine and Dopamine Systems in Bipolar Disorder?

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BPD) represents a frequent and disabling disease, characterized by the occurrence of extreme mood swings leading to episodes of depression or mania. Although dysfunctions in dopamine (DA) neurotransmission are increasingly recognized as key determinants of BPD, little attention has been given to the biological factors which may shape such a cyclicity of mania and depression. SUMMARY: We propose that BPD may result, at least in part, from skewed connections between the neuroendocrine system, the DA system, and the hypothalamic clock center. First, we provide a bri

Neuroendocrine changes in systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome.

It has become clear that the neuroendocrine and immune systems are closely linked and interdependent. The exact mechanisms of this interaction are only beginning to be unravelled. The complexity of these connections may partly explain why the aetiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases remains obscure and why genetic, hormonal, microbial, environmental, as well as a host of other factors, have all been put forward as explanations. What has become clear is that a number of neuroendocrine and hormonal factors have important immunomodulatory roles in health and disease.

Toxicity and neuroendocrine regulation of the immune response: a model analysis.

Various models have been proposed for the regulation of the primary immune response. Most of the models focus on the ability of the immune system to control a multiplying pathogen, and take into account the cross-regulations between different immune components. In the present study, we integrate the immune system in the general physiology of the host and consider the interaction between the immune and neuroendocrine systems. In addition to pathogen growth and toxicity, our four-variable model takes into account the toxic consequences for the organism of the immune response itself, as well as a

Psychiatric implications of altered limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical activity.

Hormones of the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (LHPA) system are much involved in central nervous system regulation. The major LHPA neuropeptides, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), vasopressin (AVP) and corticotropin (ACTH) do not only coordinate the neuroendocrine response to stress, but also induce behavioral adaptation. Transcription and post-translational processing of these neuropeptides is regulated by corticosteroids secreted from the adrenal cortex after stimulation by ACTH and other proopiomelanocortin derived peptides. These steroids play a key role as regulators o

The Neuro-Endocrinal Regulation in Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder characterized by the loss of melanocytes. The specific etiology of vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is thought to result from a complex interplay of factors, including autoimmune responses, intrinsic melanocyte dysfunction, genetic susceptibility, oxidative stress, and neurogenic imbalances. The disfiguring nature of vitiligo significantly impacts the mental and physical health of patients, and psychological stress can further induce and exacerbate vitiligo. Recent research has underscored the potential mediating roles of the hypothalamic

Dynamic Interactions Between the Immune System and the Neuroendocrine System in Health and Disease.

The immune system and the neuroendocrine system share many common features. Both consist of diverse components consisting of receptors and networks that are widely distributed throughout the body, and both sense and react to external stimuli which, on the one hand control mechanisms of immunity, and on the other hand control and regulate growth, development, and metabolism. It is thus not surprising, therefore, that the immune system and the neuroendocrine system communicate extensively. This article will focus on bi-directional immune-endocrine interactions with particular emphasis on the hor

Mechanisms mediating the effects of cytokines on neuroendocrine functions in the rat.

Exposure to an antigen causes significant endocrine changes, some of which in turn affect immune functioning. Proteins produced by activated immune cells, cytokines, act as messengers between the immune and the endocrine systems, and convey to the brain the occurrence of immune activation. We have investigated the ability of interleukin 1 (IL-1) alpha and beta to alter endocrine functioning in the adult rat. Acute peripheral injection of IL-1 alpha or beta causes dose-dependent increases in plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone secretion. These changes are primarily depe

Neuropharmacology of pineal secretions.

A connection between pineal function and several psychiatric diseases has been shown recently. The diurnal and seasonal rhythmicity of melatonin production is associated with affective disorders and several types of endogenous depression. The cortisolmelatonin ratio was significantly higher in depressed individuals than in healthy controls. Alterations in melatonin secretion may also occur in non-affective psychiatric disorders, such as chronic schizophrenia. Antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs modify melatonin synthesis. In rodents, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (e.g. pheniprazi

[Modification of bioelectric functions in the nervous system as a result of neurotoxin action].

Natural neurotoxins are promising molecules in the actual search for the development of alternative pest management since chemical insecticides pose unacceptable risks to the environment and to health. The aim of the article is to describe the application of two electrophysiological methods (double-oil-gap technique used on cockroach isolated giant axon and microelectrode technique used on cockroach neurosecretory DUM cells in situ) to study neurotoxin effects on insect nervous system function.

Vasopressin and brain development: studies using the Brattleboro rat.

Anomalies in hormonal and neurotransmitter status during early stages of brain development, can lead to lifespan alterations in the functioning of central systems. The neuropeptide vasopressin is nowadays recognized as a putative neurotransmitter, after years of study on its neurosecretory hormonal aspect in water metabolism. Since vasopressin is moreover present early in the brain, and has various mitogenic, metabolic and physiological actions, one might expect vasopressin to be of importance for normal brain development as well. Indeed, the absence of brain vasopressin in the Brattleboro mut

Immunogold detection of two neurohormones: the locust ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin.

The cellular localization of two neurohormones of the locust pars intercerebralis-corpora cardiaca system: the ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin, was investigated using electron microscopic immunocytochemistry (post-embedding immunogold labelling). The ovary maturing parsin and neuroparsin containing cells were first identified in semithin sections treated by combined histochemical- and immunostaining. The neuroparsin cells were paraldehyde fuchsin positive (A-type cells) and the ovary maturing parsin cells were paraldehyde fuchsin negative when semithin sections were stained with paraldeh

Grief as a neuroendocrine transition: Insights from perinatal loss.

Grief is an all-encompassing human experience that reverberates across mind, brain, and body. Historically, the scientific study of grief has been rooted primarily in psychological frameworks. Pioneering work has begun to elucidate how attachment loss is encoded not only psychologically but also biologically, and this may be particularly significant during the perinatal period.

Extracellular Matrix-Mediated Neuroendocrine Control of the Thymus.

BACKGROUND: The thymus is the primary lymphoid organ responsible for the generation of a self-tolerant and immunocompetent T-cell repertoire. Its function is not autonomous but is finely tuned by a complex neuroendocrine network, integrating signals from the central nervous system and the endocrine system to modulate thymopoiesis. While the roles of classical hormones and neurotransmitters in regulating thymic epithelial cell (TEC) function and T-cell development are increasingly recognized, the mechanistic pathways by which these signals are integrated within the thymic microenvironment still
