[Differences in the culture of pigment cells from various sources].

In order to look for a new culture system suitable for investigating on melanocyte biology, in-vitro experiments have been carried out on pigmented basal cell carcinoma, pigmented seborrhoeic keratosis and melanocytic nevus. Melanocytes cultured from pigmented basal cell carcinoma and pigmented seborrheic keratosis are dendritic and DOPA positive. These cells can be considered similar to those of normal skin. Pigmented cells cultured from nevi are quite different. They are spindle-shaped and only to a little extent are DOPA positive. These findings suggest that nevus cells could be non mature

Nevus Spilus (Speckled Lentiginous Nevus) in the Oral Cavity: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

The congenital melanocytic nevus is a pigmented melanocytic lesion that presents at birth or shortly thereafter. It is commonly described on the skin, usually on the trunk and extremities. Only five intraoral cases of congenital melanocytic nevi have been described in the English literature. A nevus spilus (speckled lentiginous nevus) is a clinical variant of congenital melanocytic nevus. The authors present the case of a 19-year-old male with an intraoral nevus spilus. The anterior mandibular gingiva exhibited multiple speckled, pigmented papules and macules on a thickened, hyperplastic macul

Solitary Intratarsal Blue Nevus.

A 42-year-old woman presented with a small pigmented lesion of the palpebral conjunctiva that had been present for a few months. Because of the possibility of melanoma, the lesion was resected. Microscopic examination displayed an intratarsal blue nevus at the level of the meibomian glands comprised of bland nonpigmented and pigmented cells that enveloped a sebaceous gland and its ducts. The cells were of admixed spindle and epithelioid configuration and were immunoreactive for Melan-A. The Ki67 proliferative marker was negative in these cells, contrasting with the epithelium of the overlying

Blue nevus: classical types and new related entities. A differential diagnostic review.

Blue nevus is an uncommon pigmented lesion of dermal melanocytes. By convention, two well defined histologic variants, designated as "common" and "cellular", have been recognised. In the last few years, these lesions have attracted much attention due to the recognition of news entities and to its confusion with malignant melanoma. In the present review, we point out the more striking features of new related entities (combined nevus, deep penetrating nevus, compound blue nevus) and establish the differential diagnosis with conflictive lesions such as atypical blue nevus, locally aggressive blue

Pigmented nevi of the oral mucosa: a clinicopathologic study of 36 new cases and review of 155 cases from the literature. Part I: A clinicopathologic study of 36 new cases.

Pigmented nevi are uncommon oral lesions. This study adds data on 36 new cases. The most common type of nevus was the intramucosal type (20 cases), followed by the common blue nevus (11 cases). Only three cases were of the compound type and only two were of the junctional type. The hard palate was the most frequent location for the blue nevus, whereas the buccal mucosa was the most frequent site for the intramucosal nevus. One nevus (intramucosal type) was located on the tongue, and to our knowledge, this is the first reported example of pigmented nevus at this site. The individual data on the

Melanocytic nevus of the gingiva associated with mirror-image bi-nucleated cells, nuclear inclusion bodies, and apoptotic bodies: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of melanocytic nevus of the gingival mucosa is reported. In a 16-year-old female, tiny black papules were clustered in an area of approximately 2 mm in diameter on the maxillary gingiva. Each papule was clearly demarcated from the surrounding healthy gingival mucosa. A resection biopsy revealed a melanocytic nevus. Each nevus cell nest was clearly separated from neighbouring nests and appeared benign on low power view. However, at high power, pigmented cells associated with mirror-image two-nuclei, nuclear inclusion bodies, and apoptosis were occasionally observed. Pigmented cells were

Lasers for Becker's nevus.

Becker's nevus is a common pigmented dermatosis, usually featured by ipsilateral pigmented patch with hypertrichosis. Becker's nevus is often treated with various types of lasers although other regimens are available. However, clinical outcomes appear inconsistent among studies. To summarize the clinical outcomes of Becker's nevus treated with lasers via literature review. A variety of lasers had been used alone or in combination to treat Becker's nevus. Laser wavelengths used for Becker's nevus ranged from 504 to 10,600 nm, while the number of treatment varied from 1 to 12 sessions. The clini

Spitz Nevus: A Rare Lesion of the Oral Cavity.

Pigmented mucosal lesions represent a group of rare entities with different etiopathogenetic origins, histopathologic features, dermoscopic appearances, and clinical course. Solitary pigmented lesions of melanocytic origin are uncommon in the oral mucosa, and intraoral occurrence of Spitz nevus is very rare. Here we present a case of Spitz nevus occurring on the hard palate of a 26-month-old boy.

Cellular Blue Nevus of Perilimbal Conjunctiva: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Cellular blue nevus is an uncommon neoplasm in the conjunctiva. Here we present an unusual case of a cellular blue nevus that clinically resembled conjunctival melanoma. A 29-year-old Chinese male was found to have a giant pigmented lesion of the conjunctiva around the limbal area of right eye from birth. Excisional biopsy with no-touch technique, lamellar corneal transplantation, amniotic membrane transplantation and adjuvant cryotherapy were performed. Histopathology revealed a nodular, well-defined tumor, which was composed of heavily pigmented dendritic cells and less pigmented spindle cel

Mechanism of recurrence of pigmented nevi following dermabrasion.

A study was made of pigment freckles which recur after skin abrasion of spotted grouped pigmented nevi, according to the lapse of time, chiefly by means of the fluorescence method of Falck and Hillarp. The mechanism of recurrence is summarized as follows. Nearly simultaneously with the epidermal regeneration, dendritic melanin-producing cells derived from hair follicles and eccrine sweat ducts appear in the basal and prickle-cell layers of epidermis. These cells then create junction activity in the basal layer of epidermis, in the hair follicles and in the eccrine sweat duct walls. Finally, th

Epidermal nevi and localized cranial defects.

We report on a girl with a congenital pigmented hairy nevus of the scalp, epidermal nevi of the right temple, and localized cranial defects. We have not found other reported cases of giant pigmented hairy nevus of the scalp occurring with absence of underlying cranial bone. We speculate that the localized cranial defects are undergrowth anomalies representative of a paracrinopathy from the overlying nevus or simultaneous bone/skin dysplasia, the former having been resorbed. In the absence of a familial history of epidermal nevi and/or seizures, our patient represents a sporadic case, perhaps a

S2k guideline: Laser therapy of the skin.

This guideline aims to improve the efficiency and safety of lasers and optical radiation sources with similar effects (especially IPL). Laser therapy of skin lesions with an increased amount of melanocytes should be performed with caution. Laser treatment of pigmented melanocytic nevi is not recommended. The guideline contains recommendations regarding the treatment of lentigines and café-au-lait spots, non-pigmented dermal nevi, Becker nevus, nevus of Ota/Hori/Ito and melasma. Further recommendations focus on the treatment of skin lesions without an increased amount of melanocytes (ephelides,

[Q-switched ruby laser in dermatologic therapy. Use and indications].

The Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) with its wavelength of 694 nm and a pulse duration of around 40 nsec is an effective modality for the removal of tattoos and cutaneous pigmented lesions. Based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, selective damage to cutaneous pigment or pigmented cells is possible, allowing the scar-free elimination of endogenous or exogenous pigment in the skin. Main indications for the treatment with the QSRL are tattoos (amateur, professional, accidental, or cosmetic) and lentigines but the QSRL can also be used for lightening or even removing other pigmented les

Intramucosal nevus in the oral cavity.

AIM: The aim of this study is to report a clinical case of oral nevus. BACKGROUND: Nevus is a congenital or acquired benign neoplasia that can be observed in the skin or mucous membranes. It is an uncommon condition in the oral mucosa. When it does occur, the preferred location is on the palate, followed by the cheek mucosa, lip and tongue. CASE REPORT: In this case study, we relate the diagnosis and treatment of a 23-year-old female patient with an irregular, pigmented lesion of the oral mucosa that underwent excisional biopsy resulting in a diagnosis of intramucosal nevus. CONCLUSION: Nev

Melanocytic Nevus of the Colon.

Here, we report a very rare case of melanocytic nevus of the colon. A 54-year-old woman with an unremarkable medical history visited our hospital for screening colonoscopy. Colonoscopy revealed a pigmented flat lesion in the ascending colon. Histological evaluation of a biopsy specimen revealed proliferation of pigmented cells in the lamina muscularis propria. On immunohistochemical analysis, pigmented cells were positive for S-100 protein and Melan-A expression, and a diagnosis of colonic melanocytic nevus was made. Although the pathogenesis underlying colonic melanocytic nevi remains unclear

[Symmetrically enlarging pigmented lesion in an adolescent].

A 16-year-old boy with multiple nevi presented with an enlarging pigmented lesion on his right chest. Previously excised nevi were all benign. Dermoscopy of the symmetrical lesion revealed a trizonal globular-homogeneous pattern. A peripheral rim of brown globules was followed by a zone with homogeneous pigmentation. The centre of the lesion showed black dots and globules. Histopathology confirmed a dysplastic compound nevus and found no diagnostic aspects of pigmented spindle cell nevus (Reed).
