Everted third eyelid cartilage in a cat: a case report and literature review.

An 8-year-old neutered female British Blue cat was presented with a presumed diagnosis of a prolapsed nictitans gland and associated ocular irritation and epiphora. However, during surgery, the apparent nictitans gland protrusion was determined to be an everted cartilage of the nictitating membrane. The scrolled portion of the cartilage was removed through an incision through the conjunctiva on the bulbar aspect of the third eyelid, as previously described in the dog. This operation resolved the ocular irritation occurring, and the third eyelid returned to its anatomically correct position.

A new nonhuman primate model of severe dry eye.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish a new rhesus monkey model of severe dry eye. METHODS: A total of 8 rhesus monkeys were used for the study. Four monkeys had their main lacrimal gland and nictitating membrane surgically removed (group 1). Another 4 monkeys had a similar surgery with further application of 50% trichloroacetic acid on the bulbar conjunctiva (group 2). The ocular surface was evaluated before and after the surgery (1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks) using Schirmer-1 test, corneal fluorescein staining, and the lissamine green test. Conjunctival impression cytology was also p

Cytology of the superficial keratinised cells in experimental keratitis sicca.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was produced in 2 rabbits by the surgical extirpation of the tear-secreting glands and the nictitating membrane in one eye. Flat mounts of the superficial corneal epithelium were prepared by the in vivo replica technique. Histomorphological and cytological studies of the keratinised cells showed the irregularly arranged, crumpled and piled-up cells. The cells contained coarse granular and fibrillar material in the cytoplasm and large granules in the nuclei. The reaction for -S-S- bridges was positive in these cells. They showed birefringence under polarisation micros

Eyelids and orbital glands of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis): Gross anatomy, histology, and histochemistry.

Morphological data on the eyelids, the third eyelid (nictitating membrane), and the orbital glands remain limited for many Anguimorpha, including the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). The ocular adnexa contribute to eye protection, lubrication, and immune defense, and they may also reflect ecological and phylogenetic variation within Squamata. The objective of this study was to describe the gross anatomical, histological, histochemical, and polarized-light microscopy characteristics of the upper and lower eyelids, third eyelid, Harderian gland, and lacrimal gland in the Komodo dragon. A pan

Avian reflex and electroencephalogram responses in different states of consciousness.

Defining states of clinical consciousness in animals is important in veterinary anaesthesia and in studies of euthanasia and welfare assessment at slaughter. The aim of this study was to validate readily observable reflex responses in relation to different conscious states, as confirmed by EEG analysis, in two species of birds under laboratory conditions (35-week-old layer hens (n=12) and 11-week-old turkeys (n=10)). We evaluated clinical reflexes and characterised electroencephalograph (EEG) activity (as a measure of brain function) using spectral analyses in four different clinical states of

Thermal cautery of the canine third eyelid for treatment of cartilage eversion.

OBJECTIVE: To present a novel, minimally invasive technique for everted third eyelid cartilage correction in dogs that employs the use of low-energy cautery to remodel the cartilage. PROCEDURES: Twelve eyes of ten dogs had cautery performed under general anesthesia to correct everted third eyelid cartilage. The tip of a handheld cautery unit or an electrocautery handpiece was applied to the bulbar conjunctival surface of the third eyelid at the central location of cartilage convexity and treated to effect. This resulted in gradual conjunctival contraction and cartilage softening that remodele

Transient unilateral Horner's syndrome after epidural ropivacaine in a dog.

OBSERVATIONS: A left sided Horner's syndrome (ptosis, prolapse of the nictitating membrane and miosis) was observed in a 4-year-old female, neutered Beagle dog after epidural injection of 0.22 mL kg(-1) ropivacaine (0.75%) in 0.01 mL kg(-1) of saline during isoflurane anaesthesia. Clinical signs disappeared gradually and resolved completely 4 hours and 10 minutes after injection. CONCLUSIONS: The epidural injection of 0.22 mL kg(-1) ropivacaine (0.75%) in 0.01 mL kg(-1) of saline during isoflurane anaesthesia caused unilateral (left) Horner's syndrome in a 4-year-old female, neutered Beagle d

A new rabbit model for keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

The authors created a new rabbit model for keratoconjunctivitis sicca by cauterizing the lacrimal gland excretory duct and surgically removing the nictitating membrane and harderian gland. Although the slit-lamp examination findings remained normal for the first 8 wk postoperatively, tear-film osmolarity was elevated by postoperative day 1. Corneal epithelial glycogen levels declined progressively, and conjunctival goblet cell density remained decreased. Multiple controls indicated that closure of the lacrimal gland excretory duct was required for elevation of tear film osmolarity, which, in t

Spark plasma sintered titania-graphene oxide: A toothless keratoprosthesis for end-stage corneal blindness.

The osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis (OOKP) remains a groundbreaking treatment for end-stage corneal blindness after 50 years, but is surgically complex and unsuitable for certain patients, particularly those without healthy teeth. We developed a novel keratoprosthesis (KPro) comprising spark plasma sintered titania-graphene oxide (TiGO) and a 5-mm PMMA optical cylinder, and evaluated its performance as an alternative to the tooth in the OOKP. The KPro's suitability for implantation was first demonstrated through the preservation of surface integrity, chemical structure, and mechanical strength f

Ocular Surgery in Non-mammalian Species.

Ophthalmic surgery in nonmammalian species requires comprehensive knowledge of their unique anatomic, physiologic, and ecological adaptations. A key cross-taxonomic feature is the striated, voluntarily controlled iris in birds, reptiles, and amphibians, requiring anesthesia-based or intracameral dilation. Surgical techniques must also account for the rigid lens and corneal architecture of fish, the fragile corneas of amphibians, the spectacle and subspectacular space of some reptiles, the scleral ossicles in birds, lizards, chelonians, teleosts and some amphibians, and powerful nictitating mem

Tear film osmolarity and ocular surface disease in two rabbit models for keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

We report the natural history of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in two rabbit models. The first one (full KCS model) was created by closing the lacrimal gland excretory duct, and removing the nictitating membrane and harderian gland. We created the second one (lacrimal gland duct only [LGDO]-KCS model) by closing the lacrimal gland excretory duct. Although tear film osmolarity was abnormally high in both models, it was higher in the full KCS model. Decreases in corneal epithelial glycogen and in conjunctival goblet cell density, and morphological abnormalities of the conjunctiva correlated w

Descriptive histological analysis of the upper, lower, and third eyelids and the conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue in birds of prey.

BACKGROUD: In this study, we present data obtained using light microscopy for the histological analysis of the upper eyelid (palpebra dorsalis), lower eyelid (palpebra ventralis), and third eyelid (palpebra tertia) also known as the nictitating membrane. We characterized the organized conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in selected raptor species. The aim of this study is to compare the histological structures of these eyelids in owls and diurnal raptors to identify potential evolutionary links or independent adaptations to their environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 34 i

Modification of the orbital rim anchorage method for surgical replacement of the gland of the third eyelid in dogs.

Excision of a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid predisposes a dog to develop keratoconjunctivitis sicca later in its lifetime, and replacement, rather than excision, of the gland is the preferred method of treatment. One method of gland replacement involves suturing the prolapsed gland to the periosteum of the ventral orbital rim. As originally described, however, the procedure required that the surgeon make a U-turn with the needle and suture within the confines of the ventral fornix. This report describes modifications to the original technique that eliminate this difficult step and make i

Iatrogenic Horner's syndrome in an experimental pig.

An adult domestic female pig (Sus scrofa) exhibited clinical signs of right-sided Horner's syndrome after experimental placement of a woven aortic stent followed by aortic catheterization. The clinical signs included a miotic pupil, ptosis of the upper eyelid, prolapse of the nictitating membrane, and enophthalmos. Necropsy revealed a large mass in the right midcervical region that encased or was in contact with the carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve. Closer evaluation of the mass revealed that it was a small piece of surgical suture material that was embedded within the lu

EVALUATION OF THE OPHTHALMIC DISEASE AND HISTOPATHOLOGIC EFFECTS DUE TO THE OCULAR TREMATODE PHILOPHTHALMUS ZALOPHI ON JUVENILE GALAPAGOS SEA LIONS ( ZALOPHUS WOLLEBAEKI).

The Galapagos sea lion ( Zalophus wollebaeki) is an otariid species endemic to the Galapagos archipelago and is currently listed as endangered. The ocular trematode Philophthalmus zalophi was recently reported to affect the survival of juvenile Galapagos sea lions on Santa Cruz Island, resulting in marked ophthalmic changes. This study evaluated the ophthalmic disease and histopathologic effects of P. zalophi on juvenile Galapagos sea lions in the largest rookery located on San Cristóbal Island. Twenty juvenile Galapagos sea lions (10 male and 10 female) were evaluated among five sites in the
