Since its first written description around 3000 BC until the present day, cancer has stood as a leading global cause of death, claiming the lives of 1 in 6 individuals. Due to its widespread impact and lethality, it remains one of the most explored yet most challenging disease for the global scientific community. Throughout history, various plant extracts have been used in treating numerous diseases, including cancer. These natural extracts are regaining attention due to their therapeutic benefits and lesser side effects. Thymoquinone, chemically 2-isopropyl-5-methylbenzo-1,4-quinone, constitu

Background/Objectives: Acquired sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) can result from a wide range of insults, including ototoxic drugs, Meniere's disease, noise-induced ototoxicity, and aging. The underlying pathophysiological mechanism arises through damage to the inner ear via oxidative stress and inflammation. Recent research suggests that natural antioxidants are promising solutions to prevent SNHL. Nigella sativa (NS), through its active compound thymoquinone (TQ), is a potent antioxidant that has shown promising results. The aim of this systematic review is to examine whether NS can offer p

The whole or ground seeds of the food ingredient Nigella sativa L., known in Western culture as "black cumin" or "black caraway", has a three-millennial history of use in Middle- and Far-Eastern cultures as a food ingredient. The seed and its extracts have also been increasingly reported as a successful therapeutic agent with efficacy often attributed to the presence of the powerful antioxidant, thymoquinone. However, quantitative analysis of the seed (especially the volatile fraction) yields widely variable results, which may be due to one or a combination of different crop origins or possibl

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ) is a common feed contaminant that adversely affects bird performance and product quality. A total of 600 7-day-old quail chicks were randomly allotted to eight experimental groups in a completely randomized design with five replicate pens and 15 quails per pen. Experimental treatments including two levels of AFB1 (0 and 2.5 mg/kg) and 4 levels of Nigella sativa (NS) (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of diet) were offered from 7 to 35 days of age to quail chicks. Although feeding of AFB1 impaired gain (G) and feed conversion ratio, dietary NS increased G (p < 0.05). Relative weight of

The neuroprotective effect of Nigella sativa (NS) on amino acid neurotransmitters alteration in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) and ciprofloxacin (CFX) treated rats in different brain regions was examined. The oral administration of NS induced an elevation in aspartate and glutamate contents, whereas the levels of GABA and glycine were decreased. Furthermore, the treated groups with PTZ and CFX caused a decrease in aspartate, glutamate and total antioxidant capacity levels, while the concentrations of GABA and glycine were increased after 14 days. Moreover, the pre- and post-treatment with NS in PTZ

OBJECTIVE: Based on the results of previous studies, the effects of N. sativa on some of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease's (NAFLD) biomarkers were positive; however, there were conflicting results regarding other variables. Therefore, the present systematic review of clinical trials was designed to clarify whether N. sativa effectively prevents the progression of NAFLD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of four databases (Scopus, PubMed, Medline, and Google scholar) was conducted to identify the clinical trials that assessed the effects of N. sativa supplementation on NAFLD. The outcome v

Schistosoma mansoni is one of the parasites causing schistosomiasis, a disease which threatens millions of people all over the world. Traditional chemical drugs are not fully effective against schistosomaisis due to the evolving drug resistant worm strains, so exploring new remedies derived from natural products is a good way to fight schistosomiasis. In the present investigation two natural products, Nigella sativa oil and Chroococcus turgidus extract were used separately or in a combination to explore their effect on S. mansoni. The infected mice treated with Chroococcus turgidus extract or/

AIM/BACKGROUND: Thymoquinone (TQ) is the major active principle of Nigella sativa seed (black seed) and is known to control many fungi, bacteria, and some viruses. However, the activity of TQ against anaerobic bacteria is not well demonstrated. Anaerobic bacteria can cause severe infections, including diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia, and brain abscess, particularly in immunodeficient individuals. The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of TQ against some anaerobic pathogens in comparison to metronidazole.
METHODS: Standard, ATCC, strains of four anaerobic bac
