Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs) are rare malignant tumors of neuro-ectodermal origin, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial tumors. The recurrence rates of CPCs are very high and typically occur in the short-term following surgery, even after gross total removal. Here we present a rare case of CPC with spinal metastasis, which occurred long after its initial presentation. The retrospective analysis of 53 cases with supratentorial low-grade (grade 1 or 2 due to WHO grading) astrocytomas included the years 1965-84. The 5-year and 10-year survival rates were 61.9% and 52.1%, respectively. Endo B (melanotic) and W (amelanotic) human malignant melanomas originated from the same tumor, both known to be heterogeneous in drug sensitivity to ACNU [( 1-(4-amino-2-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl)-methyl-3-(2-chloroethyl)-3-nitroso- urea hydrochloride]), were treated experimentally with a combination therapy of ACNU and hyperthermia in mice. Whereas Endo W melanoma has no sensitivity, Endo B melanoma is sensitive to ACNU alone. However, in both types of melanomas, a marked synergistic effect of the combination therapy was noted. Histologically, marked degeneration of both tumor cells was detected.

As part of a joint study on preoperative radiotherapy for developing an optimal mode of rectal cancer therapy, ACNU sensitization was studied in a total of 120 cases, with the cooperation of 48 facilities participating nationwide. Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) was used as part of the initial therapy for malignant glioma in 32 of 73 patients with histologically verified anaplastic astrocytoma (grade III astrocytoma) and glioblastoma multiforme. The initial treatment for all cases was subtotal or total tumor resection combined with external irradiation and chemotherapy. Thirty-eight children were diagnosed as having a brain stem glioma at Nagoya University. Thirty-three patients in our previous series from 1957 to 1983, were treated traditionally with radiation and at late stage with shunting operation for hydrocephalus and/or suboccipital decompression, but not with direct operation for tumors. From May, 1987 to January, 1991, eight patients harboring primary cerebral malignant lymphoma (primary, six cases; recurrent, two cases) were treated by intra-arterial ACNU infusion chemotherapy. All but two cases also had hyperosmotic blood brain barrier (BBB) modification.
