Gastrointestinal microbial nitrogen metabolic landscape underlies nitrogen utilization efficiency of goats fed distinct dietary protein sources.

BACKGROUND: Improving nitrogen (N) utilization efficiency in ruminant livestock is vital for coping with global protein scarcity and lowering environmental pollution. The biogeographically stratified microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) fulfill the pivotal role of metabolizing dietary N into bioavailable nutrients. In this study, we deciphered the microbial N utilization dynamics in the rumen and colon under different protein source interventions, soybean meal (SBM) and corn gluten meal (CGM) which differed in rumen degradation rate and amino acid (AA) profile, using goats as a m

Nitrogen Application Under Integrated Water-Fertilizer Management Regulates Rhizosphere Nitrogen Dynamics, Microbial Communities, and Maize Productivity.

Nitrogen management strongly regulates rhizosphere nutrient availability, microbial ecological processes, and maize productivity in fertigation-based systems. Yet, the mechanisms by which nitrogen application gradients shape rhizosphere nitrogen transformations and microbial community stability remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a field experiment with four nitrogen levels (N0 0 kg·hm⁻², N1 100 kg·hm⁻², N2 140 kg·hm⁻², and N3 180 kg·hm⁻²) was conducted to clarify how nitrogen inputs influence rhizosphere nitrogen forms, microbial community assembly, and yield performance in maize

A Nitrogen budget for Norway analysis of Nitrogen flows from societal and natural sources (1961-2020).

Nitrogen is a chemical element that is cycled through Earth's lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and atmosphere, as well as a crucial component of the molecular machinery of life. Being an intrinsic part of the biosphere, the flow of nitrogen in a country can provide unique insights into the sustainability of a society. This study investigates how nitrogen is used in Norway between 1961 and 2020. Nitrogen inputs from atmospheric deposition, biological nitrogen fixation and from weathering, as well as from synthetic fertilizers are addressed. These sources of nitrogen are used by plants that

Enhanced nitrogen removal in immersed rotating self-aerated biofilm reactor: Nitrogen removal pathway and microbial mechanism.

To achieve energy-efficient treatment of the rural wastewater with satisfying performance, a novel immersed rotating self-aerated biofilm reactor (iRSABR) was proposed in this study. The iRSABR system showed better biofilm renewal performance and higher microbial activity. The effect of different regulation strategies on the iRSABR system was investigated in this study. The 70% immersion ratio and 4 r/min rotation speed (stage III) exhibited the best performance, with a total nitrogen removal efficiency of 86% and a simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) rate of 76%, along with the h

Nitrogen isotope differences between atmospheric nitrate and corresponding nitrogen oxides: A new constraint using oxygen isotopes.

Tracking of reactive nitrogen (N) sources is important for the effective mitigation of N emissions. By combining the N and oxygen (O) isotopes of atmospheric NO3-, stable isotope mixing models were recently applied to evaluate the relative contributions of major NOx sources. However, it has long been unresolved how to accurately constrain the δ15N differences between NO3- and corresponding NOx (ε(NO2→NO3-) values). Here, we first incorporated the HC oxidation (NO2 → NO3-) pathway by using Δ17O values to evaluate the ε(NO2→NO3-) values, performed on NO3- in PM2.5 collected during the day and at

Controlling Nitrogen Oxide (NO x ) Emissions from Exothermic Nitrogen Generation Systems for Application in Subsea Environments.

A highly exothermic nitrogen generation system (NGS) can be achieved by mixing solutions of sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride, a process used by the oil and gas industry to dissolve paraffin wax and gas hydrates. Although its main products are nitrogen gas and a sodium chloride brine, the NGS has a side reaction that produces nitrogen oxides. To optimize this process to ensure the greatest and fastest heat generation with the lowest oxide production, this reaction was checked by infrared spectroscopy and calorimetry. The factors temperature, pH, and initial concentration of nitrite and ammo

Nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands using nitritation/anammox and nitrification/ denitrification: effects of influent nitrogen concentration.

Simultaneous nitritation/anammox and nitrification/denitrification (SNAND) is a promising method to increase nitrogen removal from ammonium- and nitrate-rich wastewater. This study examined the effects of influent nitrogen concentrations on plant assimilation and microbial nitrogen removal via SNAND in three free water surface wetlands. Anammox and denitrification contributed 78 and 22%, respectively, of microbial removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Nitrogen removal rates increased with influent concentrations in the low ranges of 17 to 105 mg N/L ammonium and 51 to 179 mg N/L TIN. Howe

Rumen and fecal tungstic acid precipitable nitrogen and total amino nitrogen in cows fed complete diets.

Tungstic acid precipitable N and nonprecipitable N were measured in feed, rumen and feces of cows fed complete diets, and changes in ratios of these components to chromic oxide were used to estimate net changes in true protein from feed to rumen to feces. Apparent digestible true protein leaving the rumen was assumed to be metabolizable protein. Rumen contents were hand mixed before sampling from rumen-fistulated cows so that samples would be as representative of total rumen contents as possible, and these samples were assumed to represent contents being passed to small intestine. Metabolizabl

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi reshape carbon-nitrogen balance and metabolism in nitrogen-limited escarole (Cichorium endivia L.).

Nitrogen nutrition remains a major challenge for sustainable crop production, particularly under the current need to reduce fertilizer inputs. This study evaluated whether inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improves the physiological, nutritional, and metabolic performance of escarole (Cichorium endivia L.) plants under nitrogen-limited conditions. Escarole plants were grown under two nitrogen regimes, full nitrogen supply and 25% of the optimal nitrogen concentration, either inoculated or non-inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis. Plant growth, mineral composition, soluble

OsCYP51H9 integrates brassinosteroid biosynthesis and nitrogen sensing to enhance grain development and nitrogen utilization in rice.

Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and grain development are pivotal for rice yield improvement, particularly under low-nitrogen (LN) conditions. Cytochrome P450 CYP51 family members are conserved obtusifoliol 14α-demethylases essential for phytosterol and brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis; however, the biological roles of the rice CYP51H subfamily remain largely unclear. Here, we characterized OsCYP51H9, a gene encoding an endoplasmic reticulum-localized protein highly expressed in reproductive and vascular tissues. Loss-of-function mutants (oscyp51h9) and RNAi lines exhibited BR-deficient phenoty

Unprecedented 100% conversion from pyridinic to pyrrolic nitrogen configuration for electrochemically active nitrogen-doped carbon materials.

Nitrogen-doped carbons with promising electrochemical performance exhibit a strong dependence on nitrogen configuration. Therefore, accurate control of nitrogen configurations is crucial to clarify their influence. Unfortunately, there is still no well-defined conversion route to finely control nitrogen configuration. Herein, we proposed the concept of 100% conversion from pyridinic to pyrrolic nitrogen in carbon materials through low-temperature pyrolysis and alkali activation of hydroxypyridine-3-halophenol-formaldehyde resins. Their dehalogenation pyrolysis promotes formation of carbon inte

Biological removal of nitrogen oxides by microalgae, a promising strategy from nitrogen oxides to protein production.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the components of fossil flue gases that give rise to serious environmental and health hazards. Among the available techniques for NOx removal, microalgae-based biological removal of NOx (BioDeNOx) is a promising and competent technology with eco-friendly path of low energy and low-cost solution for the pollution. In this review article, current biological technologies including bacteria-based and microalgae-related BioDeNOx are discussed. Comparing to direct BioDeNOx approach, indirect BioDeNOx by microalgae is more promising since it is more stable, reliable and eff

A Quantum Chemical Investigation into the Molecular Mechanism of the Atmospheric Reactions of Chemi-Ions with Nitrogen and Nitrogen Oxides.

Nitrogen oxides and chemi-ions are atmospheric pollutants with considerable aeronomic interest. These toxicants can react with each other, producing various ionic species and highly reactive by-products that play a crucial role in aerosol clustering and mediate several important atmospheric reactions. Understanding the chemical reactivity of these pollutants can provide essential information for controlling their excess emission into the atmosphere. Computational modeling and electronic structure studies help in predicting the structure, reactivity, and thermodynamics of transient atmospheric

Nitrogen cycling microbiomes are structured by plant mycorrhizal associations with consequences for nitrogen oxide fluxes in forests.

Volatile nitrogen oxides (N2 O, NO, NO2 , HONO, …) can negatively impact climate, air quality, and human health. Using soils collected from temperate forests across the eastern United States, we show microbial communities involved in nitrogen (N) cycling are structured, in large part, by the composition of overstory trees, leading to predictable N-cycling syndromes, with consequences for emissions of volatile nitrogen oxides to air. Trees associating with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi promote soil microbial communities with higher N-cycle potential and activity, relative to microbial commu

L-Glutamine as a nitrogen source for Corynebacterium glutamicum: derepression of the AmtR regulon and implications for nitrogen sensing.

Corynebacterium glutamicum, a Gram-positive soil bacterium employed in the industrial production of various amino acids, is able to use a number of different nitrogen sources, such as ammonium, urea or creatinine. This study shows that l-glutamine serves as an excellent nitrogen source for C. glutamicum and allows similar growth rates in glucose minimal medium to those in ammonium. A transcriptome comparison revealed that the nitrogen starvation response was elicited when glutamine served as the sole nitrogen source, meaning that the target genes of the global nitrogen regulator AmtR were dere

Acute effects of moderate dehydration on the hepatic conversion of amino nitrogen into urea nitrogen in healthy men.

Intracellular hydration may play a role in the regulation of protein and nitrogen metabolism. The hepatic removal of nitrogen by urea synthesis has a key regulatory role in nitrogen balance. The purpose of the present study was to establish the acute effects of dehydration on the hepatic kinetics of urea synthesis, quantified by functional hepatic nitrogen clearance (FHNC), in healthy volunteers. Seven healthy men were studied twice in random order. On both study days, a primed continuous infusion of alanine was given. On the day of dehydration an intravenous bolus injection of a loop diuretic

Nitroaromatic Antibiotics as Nitrogen Oxide Sources.

Nitroaromatic antibiotics show activity against anaerobic bacteria and parasites, finding use in the treatment of Heliobacter pylori infections, tuberculosis, trichomoniasis, human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis. Despite this activity and a clear need for the development of new treatments for these conditions, the associated toxicity and lack of clear mechanisms of action have limited their therapeutic development. Nitroaromatic antibiotics require reductive bioactivation for activity and this reductive metabolism can convert the nitro group to nitric oxide (NO) or a
