Benign paroxysmal vertigo, and Bárány's caloric reactions.

The Nobel Prize winner Robert Bárány described benign positional vertigo and related it to the otoliths in 1921. Dix and Hallpike further elucidated this clinically distinctive, common disorder in 1952. The displacement of otoliths from the utricle or saccule into one of the semicircular canals later proved to be the underlying mechanism, described by Schuknecht and utilised therapeutically by Semont and Epley.

Upon entering an age of global ivermectin-based integrated mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases and malaria.

Ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) in humans to reduce malaria vectors is yet another use for this remarkable medicine whose discoverers shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine with the discoverer of artemisinin. The malaria community should join those who have long used ivermectin MDA in an integrated battle to break transmission of three vector-borne parasitic diseases.

Organometallic complexes: new tools for chemotherapy.

The importance of organometallics can be noticed by their presence in all life organisms. The most known natural organometallic molecule is vitamin B12, a porphyrin containing a cobalt atom, useful for several enzymatic transformations. Based on the remarkable properties of this class of compounds, a new area of medicinal research was developed. Gérard Jaouen was the first to introduce the term of "bioorganometallic chemistry" in 1985 although the first organometallic therapeutical was Salvarsan®, discovered by Paul Ehrlich (Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1908). Bioorganometallic chemistry consist

John Nash, game theory, and the schizophrenic brain.

This article focuses on John Nash, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994, and subject of the Award winning 2001 film A Beautiful Mind, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1958 at the age of 29. After presenting an account of the emergence, course, and eventual remission of his illness, the article argues for the relevance of his contribution to game theory, known as the Nash equilibrium, for which he received the Nobel Prize, to research studies of the schizophrenic brain and how it deviates from the normal brain. The case is made that the Nash equilibrium is descripti

Werner Forssmann: a pioneer of cardiology.

Werner Forssmann, André F. Cournand, and Dickinson W. Richards were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1956 for seminal work on heart catheterization, Forssmann for his pioneering self-experiment, and Cournand and Richards for establishing heart catheterization as a standard diagnostic and treatment procedure in cardiology. Forssmann's self-experiment pushed the boundaries of medicine into a new era and opened the door of modern cardiology. This historical study depicts Forssmann's life narrative and the forces, political and personal as well, that shaped his personality. His upbringing in Berlin, his

[Karl Landsteiner].

Karl Landsteiner received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1930. He worked in Vienna, The Hague and New York, making fundamental contributions in the field of immune hematology (blood groups and Rhesus factor), syphilis (visualising spirochetes in the dark field) and poliomyelitis (viral genesis). In particular, his findings in the general field of serology and immunology (haptens, specificity of antigens) have not lost any of their significance and are valid to this day.

Explosive discovery, surprising future: The extraordinary journey of nitroglycerin, nitroderivatives and nitric oxide.

For over 150 years, nitrates have been a cornerstone in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Nitroglycerin - synthesized by Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero in 1847 - was initially used in explosives, as the main component of dynamite, by Alfred Nobel. The Scottish physician Lauder Brunton first used amyl nitrite for angina in 1867, and in 1879 the English physician William Murrell described the benefits of nitroglycerin for angina pectoris. Organic nitrates, including nitroglycerin, act as nitric oxide donors, sharing the mechanism of NO release, which induces vasodilation. This paper revi

[The history of transplantation].

Transplantation is a young discipline with a long history, of which this paper therefore only describes fragments. The story is created by the pioneers, who made the basis for transplantation. I have focused on those who received the Nobel prize for their work, Carrel (1912), Burnet, Medawar (1960), Snell, Dausset, Benacerraf (1980), Elion, Hitchings (1988), and Thomas and Murray (1990), however many others deserve to be mentioned. Parallelled with the development of transplantation, other disciplines like immunology have grown up. Today we can transplant kidneys, hearts, livers, and bone marr

Recent Developments in Protein Lactylation in PTSD and CVD: Novel Strategies and Targets.

In 1938, Corneille Heymans received the Nobel Prize in physiology for discovering that oxygen sensing in the aortic arch and carotid sinus was mediated by the nervous system. The genetics of this process remained unclear until 1991 when Gregg Semenza while studying erythropoietin, came upon hypoxia-inducible factor 1, for which he obtained the Nobel Prize in 2019. The same year, Yingming Zhao found protein lactylation, a posttranslational modification that can alter the function of hypoxia-inducible factor 1, the master regulator of cellular senescence, a pathology implicated in both post-trau

[Helicobacter pylori, the story so far].

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterial pathogen infecting the gastric antrum of half the population worldwide. H. pylori has been discovered in 1982 by J. Robin Warren and Barry J. Marshall as the major cause of gastroduodenal pathologies, including gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastric cancer and gastric B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. For this great discovery Warren and Marshall deserved the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 2005.

MATERIALS SCIENCE: Long-Wavelength Lasers Sniff Out New Uses.

Just a few weeks after two physicists won the Nobel Prize for figuring out how to make lasers out of semiconductors, researchers announced that they have made those lasers much more useful. A new technique permits the lasers to shine light in regions of the infrared spectrum previously inaccessible to similar devices. The advance may open the door to cheap devices to sniff explosives and other robotic sensors.

Artemisinin-derived antimalarial endoperoxides from bench-side to bed-side: Chronological advancements and future challenges.

According to WHO World Malaria Report (2018), nearly 219 million new cases of malaria occurred and a total no. of 435 000 people died in 2017 due to this infectious disease. This is due to the rapid spread of parasite-resistant strains. Artemisinin (ART), a sesquiterpene lactone endoperoxide isolated from traditional Chinese herb Artemisia annua, has been recognized as a novel class of antimalarial drugs. The 2015 "Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine" was given to Prof Dr Tu Youyou for the discovery of ART. Hence, ART is termed as "Nobel medicine." The present review article accommodates ins

[The first three Nordic Nobel laureates in physiology or medicine].

Among all the Nobel Laureates in physiology or medicine there are five from Denmark and seven from Sweden. The first three Laureates are presented in this paper. Over 50 years have elapsed since they were awarded and the Nobel archives are now open for scrutiny, providing insight into how the Nobel committee interpreted the instruction given in Nobel's will at that time. Niels Finsen (1860-1904, Nobel Laureate 1903) devoted his short life to a continuous study of the biological effects of sunshine, which resulted in a method aimed at utilizing the bacteriocide properties of sun rays in the tre

[The fantastic story of the incredible prion].

From the scrapie of the sheep to the bovine spongiform encephalitis, and from the kuru to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, tenacious investigators searched for the mysterious agent of these neurological disorders, till Stanley Prusiner discovered and described the prion in the eighties, wining the Nobel Prize in 1997. But this was not the end of the fantastic history of the incredible protein designed prion by Prusiner, because now the investigation on neuroscience has founded prion-like proteins playing an important role in the genesis of the long-term memory.
