Cognitive after-effects of vibration and noise exposure and the role of subjective noise sensitivity.

This study investigated the effects on attention performance after exposure to noise and whole-body vibration in relation to subjective noise sensitivity. Sixteen high and 16 low sensitivity male students, as determined by the Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Questionnaire, participated in a within-subjects experiment. Noise and vibration stimuli similar to those usually occurring in forestry vehicles were presented either individually, combined or not at all in four separate sessions lasting approximately 44 min. After exposure, participants completed an attention task and made subjective ratings

Impulse noise measurement in view of noise hazard assessment and use of hearing protectors.

Experience shows the occurrence of situations when the measurements of impulse noise parameters are made with measurement equipment unsuitable for such conditions. The results of using such equipment were compared with the results of using equipment with a sufficiently large upper limit of the measurement range. The analysis was carried out on the example of noise generated during shots from a Mossberg smooth-bore shotgun and AKM rifle, as well as produced in the forge. The use of the unsuitable equipment allowed to indicate the exceeding of the exposure limit value of the peak value of the si

Influencing Factors Identification and Prediction of Noise Annoyance-A Case Study on Substation Noise.

Noise-induced annoyance is one person's individual adverse reaction to noise. Noise annoyance is an important basis for determining the acceptability of environmental noise exposure and for formulating environmental noise standards. It is influenced by both acoustic and non-acoustic factors. To identify non-acoustic factors significantly influencing noise annoyance, 40 noise samples with a loudness level of 60-90 phon from 500-1000 kV substations were selected in this study. A total of 246 subjects were recruited randomly. Using the assessment scale of noise annoyance specified by ISO 15666-20

Effects of Noise Exposure and Aging on Behavioral Tone Detection in Quiet and Noise by Mice.

Aging leads to degeneration of the peripheral and central auditory systems, hearing loss, and difficulty understanding sounds in noise. Aging is also associated with changes in susceptibility to or recovery from damaging noise exposures, although the effects of the interaction between acute noise exposure and age on the perception of sounds are not well studied. We tested these effects in the CBA/CaJ mouse model of age-related hearing loss using operant conditioning procedures before and after noise exposure and longitudinally measured changes in their sensitivity for detecting tones in quiet

Noise reduction profile: A new method for evaluation of noise reduction techniques in CT.

PURPOSE: Noise power spectrum (NPS) is a commonly used performance metric to evaluate noise-reduction techniques (NRT) in imaging systems. The images reconstructed with and without an NRT can be compared via their NPS to better understand the NRT's effects on image noise. However, when comparing NPSs, simple visual assessments or a comparison of NPS peaks or medians are often used. These assessments make it difficult to objectively evaluate the effect of noise reduction across all spatial frequencies. In this work, we propose a new noise reduction profile (NRP) to facilitate a more complete an

Exposure modifiers of the relationships of transportation noise with high blood pressure and noise annoyance.

In the cross-sectional hypertension and exposure to noise near airports study the relationship between road traffic noise, aircraft noise and hypertension and annoyance was investigated. The data collection comprised a variety of potentially exposure modifying factors, including type of housing, location of rooms, window opening habits, use of noise-reducing remedies, shielding due to obstacles, lengths of exposure. In the present paper the quantitative role of these factors on the relationship between road and aircraft noise exposure and outcomes was analyzed. Multiple logistic and linear reg

The Words-in-Noise (WIN) test with multitalker babble and speech-spectrum noise maskers.

The Words-in-Noise (WIN) test uses monosyllabic words in seven signal-to-noise ratios of multitalker babble (MTB) to evaluate the ability of individuals to understand speech in background noise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the criterion validity of the WIN by comparing recognition performances under MTB and speech-spectrum noise (SSN) using listeners with normal hearing and listeners with hearing loss. The MTB and SSN had identical rms and similar spectra but different amplitude-modulation characteristics. The performances by the listeners with normal hearing, which were 2 dB bet

Extra-auditory effects of noise in laboratory animals: the relationship between noise and sleep.

Noise has both auditory and extra-auditory effects. Some of the most deleterious extra-auditory effects of noise are those leading to sleep disturbances. These disturbances seem to be related to both endogenous (physical parameters) and exogenous (sex, age) factors of noise. Despite correlative relations between noise level and awakenings, the scientific community has not reached consensus regarding a specific action of these factors on the different sleep stages. In animal research, 2 complementary main fields of research exist. One is focused on the positive modulation of sleep by repeated t

Noise in the animal shelter environment: building design and the effects of daily noise exposure.

Sound levels in animal shelters regularly exceed 100 dB. Noise is a physical stressor on animals that can lead to behavioral, physiological, and anatomical responses. There are currently no policies regulating noise levels in dog kennels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the noise levels dogs are exposed to in an animal shelter on a continuous basis and to determine the need, if any, for noise regulations. Noise levels at a newly constructed animal shelter were measured using a noise dosimeter in all indoor dog-holding areas. These holding areas included large dog adoptable, large d

Noise-noise effect upon the spreading of the posttraumatic progressive necrosis in the organ of Corti.

Progressive necrosis of the organ of Corti caused by a disturbance of the ionic composition of the Cortilymph resulting from the infiltration of endolymph into the organi of Corti after traumatization of its barrier against the scala media, is greatly intensified by posttraumatic stimulation with noise of physiological intensities. This effect is attributed to oscillation of the cochlear partition, with resultant greater blending of the Cortilymph and the endolymph. Stimulation augments necrosis fourfold towards the base of the cochlea and twofold towards the helicotrema. Posttraumatic stimula

Noise in cesarean deliveries: a comprehensive analysis of noise environments in the Labor and Delivery operating room and evaluation of a visual alarm noise abatement program.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean delivery is the most common major surgery worldwide. Noise in healthcare settings leads to impaired communication and concentration, and stress among healthcare providers. Limited information is available about noise at cesarean delivery. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to achieve a comprehensive analysis of noise that occurs during cesarean deliveries. Sound level meters are used to determine baseline noise levels and to describe the frequency of acute noise generated during a cesarean delivery that will cause a human startle response. Secondarily, we aimed to evaluate the e

Noise matters: assessing non-auditory health impacts of occupational noise exposure among factory workers.

BACKGROUND: Industrial noise exposure is a global occupational hazard, with increasing recognition of its deleterious non-auditory effects. Although the auditory consequences of excessive noise are well-known, an emerging body of evidence suggests significant impacts on cognition, cardiovascular and metabolic functions. India with a burgeoning industrial workforce and limited occupational health surveillance, remains under-researched in this domain. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the physiological and sensory processing impact of occupational noise exposure among industrial workers in Gu

Noise within: Signal-to-noise enhancement via coherent wave amplification in the mammalian cochlea.

The extraordinary sensitivity of the mammalian inner ear has captivated scientists for decades, largely due to the crucial role played by the outer hair cells (OHCs) and their unique electromotile properties. Typically arranged in three rows along the sensory epithelium, the OHCs work in concert via mechanisms collectively referred to as the "cochlear amplifier" to boost the cochlear response to faint sounds. While simplistic views attribute this enhancement solely to the OHC-based increase in cochlear gain, the inevitable presence of internal noise requires a more rigorous analysis. Achieving

Transportation noise exposure, noise annoyance and respiratory health in adults: A repeated-measures study.

Transportation noise leads to sleep disturbance and to psychological and physiological sustained stress reactions, which could impact respiratory health. However, epidemiologic evidence on associations of objective transportation noise exposure and also perceived noise annoyance with respiratory morbidity is limited. We investigated independent associations of transportation noise exposure and noise annoyance with prevalent respiratory symptoms and incident asthma in adults. Using 17,138 observations (from 7049 participants) from three SAPALDIA (Swiss Cohort Study on Lung and Heart Diseases in

Association between lifetime noise exposure and audiometric thresholds using the noise exposure structured interview.

Noise exposure is pervasive in modern society and a major contributor to hearing loss across the lifespan. This study examined how cumulative lifetime noise exposure, measured using the Noise Exposure Structured Interview (NESI), associates with age to affect audiometric thresholds. Fifty-four adults (23-82 years; 25 female) completed the NESI (occupational, recreational, and firearm noise exposure), hearing function self-reports, pure-tone audiometry, and speech-reception testing. Multivariate regression analyses evaluated independent and interactive effects of age and noise exposure on audit

Environmental trade-offs for using low-noise pavements: Life cycle assessment with noise considerations.

Noise mitigation is the main advantage of semi-dense asphalt (SDA) pavements compared to traditional pavements such as stone-mastic asphalt (SMA), but noise is not quantitatively considered in traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). This article performs a comprehensive LCA for SMA and SDA including noise considerations. State-of-the-art sound emission and acoustical ageing models were used to determine the road traffic noise. The latest Swiss dose-response curves and current noise exposure data were used to evaluate health impacts due to noise. Additionally, traditional LCA is also included

High internal noise and poor external noise filtering characterize perception in autism spectrum disorder.

An emerging hypothesis postulates that internal noise is a key factor influencing perceptual abilities in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Given fundamental and inescapable effects of noise on nearly all aspects of neural processing, this could be a critical abnormality with broad implications for perception, behavior, and cognition. However, this proposal has been challenged by both theoretical and empirical studies. A crucial question is whether and how internal noise limits perception in ASD, independently from other sources of perceptual inefficiency, such as the ability to filter out exter
