Noma (Cancrum Oris/Ulcerogingivostomstitis) is a rare devastating grangrenous orofacial disease. It may lead to severe facial mutilation and deformities with dysfunctional effects. This disease primarily affects malnourished children from underdeveloped countries. It has recently been associated with AIDS in North America and Western Europe. We will be reporting and discussing the pathogenesis, bacteriological complications and treatments according to the literature.

Noma is an orofacial gangrenous infection commonly affecting malnourished children in the tropical region of the World, particularly the sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria is a sub-Saharan African country which is among the countries seriously affected by noma. In Nigeria, noma has been classified as a priority disease. However, only very little attention has been focused on noma research in Nigeria, unlike many other priority diseases. This study conducted an informetric analysis of research outputs on noma in Nigeria, using the PubMed database - a world-leading and authoritative database of medical

Noma, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is a preventable oro-facial gangrenous infection causing destruction of oro-facial tissues if untreated. This descriptive study was conducted in North-Eastern Nigeria which has witnessed armed insurgency increasing risk of noma. Data was obtained from patients' records at a tertiary hospital after a dental educational outreach using radio and visits to the hospital's ante/postnatal clinics. Data analysis was conducted at 95% confidence interval with p≤ 0.05 considered significant. Records of 49 patients were retrieved but 31 (63.3%) were utilised due t

A retrospective study covering ten years (1987-1996) was conducted to assess the epidemiology, clinical features and management of cancrum oris (noma) in children from Burkina Faso. Fifty nine (59) children were admitted with cancrum oris at the paediatrics and maxillo-facial surgery units of Bobo-Dioulasso, the second town of Burkina Faso. The hospital prevalence of noma is 1.5/1000. 81% of the cases were in the 1 to 5 years age group and 58% were females. Predisposing factors include poverty, lack of immunization, malnutrition, bad oral hygiene, measles and parasitic diseases. The cheek was

This retrospective study objects to report epidemiological profile, clinical display and take care of progressive noma at the National Hospital Center of Ouagadougou. We assign the term noma to the gangrenous gingivo-stomatitis occurring in a prone environment, leading in a few days into a sharp ulcer in the soft parts, accompanied by halitosis. This definition excludes noma like-lesions. 27 cases have been observed in the ENT department and the Paediatrics between 1991 and 1995. They were 17 boys and 10 girls aging between 2 and 8 years and most of them coming from families with modest income

Optical wireless communication (OWC) has emerged as a promising complementary technology to radio frequency systems. Particularly, under photon-limited channel conditions, despite the advantages of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), their performance is limited by dead time and lack of photon-number resolution (PNR), which degrade signal detection in multi-user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. In this paper, we propose what is believed to be a novel posterior-probability-based adjusted threshold-successive interference cancellation (AT-SIC) algorithm to mitigate error propag

Joint active and passive beamforming in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) downlink is a non-convex constrained problem whose Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points are generally non-isolated. We formulate the normalized beamformers, continuous IRS angles, and inequality multipliers as one coupled projected primal-dual dynamical state. Here, single-layer means simultaneous primal-dual evolution; the numerical integrator may still contain multiple stages. Angle coordinates remove the unit-modulus equalities, while an adjacent-chain representation red

BACKGROUND: Cancrum Oris is a devastating gangrenous lesion of the orofacial regions that primarily affects the undernourished children, with consequent disfigurement of the face. Noma places a considerable social, psychological, emotional, and financial burden on their informal caregivers. However, this burden on caregivers remains largely understudied. This research aimed to assess the level and predictors of caregiver psychological burden among informal caregivers of Noma patients in Northwestern Nigeria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 92 informal c

Noma (cancrum oris) is a mutilating necrotising disease of the orofacial tissues. It affects predominantly debilitated malnourished children, in whom the necrotic process may cause severe damage to mid-facial structures. Its aetiopathogenesis is uncertain, but its course is fulminating, and without timely intervention the disease may be fatal. Antibiotic treatment during any stage of necrotising stomatitis and of its sequel noma can stop progression of the disease; therefore detection and treatment of early intraoral necrotising lesions whether necrotising gingivitis, necrotising periodontitis

BACKGROUND: Noma is a severe, rapidly progressing necrotizing infection that predominantly affects children in resource-limited settings and can lead to devastating facial disfigurement. Despite its burden, limited data exist on its clinical profile and surgical outcomes in Ethiopia.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 103 noma survivors treated during the Facing Africa surgical missions in Ethiopia from 2007 to 2020. Data were collected on sociodemographics, clinical presentation, anatomical involvement, surgical procedures, complications, and follow-up outcomes. Descriptive stati

At a rural district hospital in Burundi, a 3-year-old severely malnourished girl with Noma presented to the operating room for placement of a gastrostomy tube. The child had a large left-sided facial defect as well as trismus. After induction of general anesthesia, the anesthesia provider was unable to open her mouth. Given that the hospital has no fiberoptic bronchoscope, direct laryngoscopy and intubation were performed directly through her facial defect. After securing the airway, the surgery proceeded without difficulty.

BACKGROUND: Although protective in secondary stroke prevention of intracranial arterial stenosis (ICAS), it is uncertain if the benefits of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) extend to asymptomatic ICAS or extracranial carotid stenosis (ECAS). Therefore, we sought to determine LTPA's relationship with ECAS and ICAS in a stroke-free, race-ethnically diverse cohort.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included participants from the magnetic resonance imaging substudy of the Northern Manhattan Study, of whom 1274 had LTPA assessments at enrollment. LTPA was represented continuously as metabol

BACKGROUND: Intracranial large artery stenosis (ILAS) is an important contributor to ischemic stroke in the United States and worldwide. There is evidence to suggest that chronic exposure to certain infectious agents may also be associated with ILAS. We aimed to study this association further in an ethnically diverse, prospective, population-based sample of Northern Manhattan.
METHODS: We enrolled a random sample of stroke-free participants from an urban, racially, and ethnically diverse community in 1993. Participants have been followed prospectively and a subset underwent brain magnetic res

Health is wealth. Economics is creation of wealth. There is a direct relationship between health and economics. Noma, associated with extreme poverty, can be used as an economic index.

BACKGROUND: Noma is an infectious but opportunistic disease that often results in severe facial disfigurements and mortality if untreated. As noma progresses quickly, early detection and treatment are important to prevent its development.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate primary healthcare workers' knowledge and management of noma in a rural part of Zambia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional self-completed survey was conducted among 35 healthcare workers from two district hospitals and 15 rural health centres in Serenje District, Zambia. Participants' practice competences a

The case of a 65-year-old noma patient with a defect involving her upper lip is presented. The defect also included missing teeth numbers eleven, twelve, 21, and 22 and the adjoining alveolus. One-stage lip reconstruction was carried out with Gillies fan flap followed by vestibuloplasty and commissuroplasty. An acrylic partial denture was subsequently fabricated to replace the missing teeth and thereby restore function. Even though the incidence of cancrum oris has reduced worldwide, cases are still being reported in Africa and can leave behind a significant facial defect. Whereas most cases o
