Children have been shown to generalize information acquired from social partners better when it is provided to them in a communicative manner. Two distinct learning mechanisms have been proposed to explain how communicative demonstrations assist the acquisition of generic knowledge in infants: by strengthening or speeding up inductive generalization processes (Boosted Induction), or by providing a direct generic statement in a nonverbal form (Nonverbal Generics), which makes additional generalization processes unnecessary. We sought to adjudicate between these accounts by exploring how childre

Nonverbal signals color the meanings of interpersonal relationships. Humans rely on facial, head, postural, and vocal signals to express relational messages along continua. Three of relevance are dominance-submission, composure-nervousness and trust-distrust. Machine learning and new automated analysis tools are making possible a deeper understanding of the dynamics of relational communication. These are explored in the context of group interactions during a game entailing deception. The "messiness" of studying communication under naturalistic conditions creates many measurement and design obs

It has been well established that pre-lingually hearing-impaired children experience difficulties in speech development. Little appears in the literature, however, about speech development in aphonic children. The authors have had the opportunity to manage several children who, for various reasons, were unable to phonate from a pre-lingual age to approximately the age of 5 or 6 years. The children in this report developed various compensatory means of communication, including unusual laryngeal, non-laryngeal and nonverbal communication. Representative cases are reviewed and observations are ma

Research supports using nonverbal pain behaviors to identify pain in persons with dementia. It is unknown whether variations exist among ethnic groups in the expression of nonverbal pain behaviors in this special population. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine ethnic differences in the presentation and intensity of nonverbal pain behaviors among African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic older adults with dementia when screened for pain by certified nursing assistants. Six certified nursing assistants were trained to review and score 28 video recordings of subjects with dementi

The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) was used to examine diagnostic profiles and age-related changes in autism symptoms for a group of verbal children and adolescents who had fragile X syndrome, with and without autism. After controlling for nonverbal IQ, we found statistically significant between-group differences for lifetime and current autism symptoms for the Communication and Restricted Interests/Repetitive Behaviors domains, but not the Reciprocal Social Interaction domain. Effect sizes for differences in Reciprocal Social Interaction also were smaller than effect sizes for th

RATIONALE: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are characterised by significant challenges in communication, social interaction, and adaptive function, often impacting quality of life. Previous studies support genetic influences on the communication abilities of individuals with NDD, but were either limited to single genetic conditions or to small cohorts with a limited selection of communication measures.
METHODS: We analysed caregiver-reported communication abilities in 79,518 individuals with NDD from the Simons Searchlight and SPARK registries: 4,439 with a CNV-based or monogenic NDD and

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between joint attention ability and oromotor imitation skill in three groups of young children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder using both nonverbal oral and verbal motor imitation tasks. Research questions addressed a) differences among joint attention and oromotor imitation abilities; b) the relationship between independently measured joint attention and oromotor imitation, both nonverbal oral and verbal motor; c) the relationships between joint attention and verbal motor imitation during interpersonal interaction; and d) the relationshi

The authors present the case of an elderly, nonverbal nursing home resident with dementia who developed fecal impaction, despite interventions such as enema. Subsequent stercoral perforation of the sigmoid colon resulted in peritonitis, sepsis, and death. The authors discuss colon perforation as a result of fecal impaction, as well as the difficulties of pain assessment and communication in patients with dementia.

UNLABELLED: Little evidence-based research has been published within the field of communication disorders on the role of dogs as catalysts for human communication. This single participant study, a point of entry into this realm of research, explores the effects of a therapy dog on the communication skills of a patient with aphasia receiving intensive speech and language therapy within a rehabilitation setting. The researchers conclude that the presence of the dog does have the potential to stimulate both overt social-verbal and social-nonverbal communication.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of

BACKGROUND: Suicide assessments have historically privileged verbal report by the patient, despite the fact that nonverbal behaviors of patients and their clinicians may convey important affective and interpersonal information about suicide risk. Recent advances in computational science enable efficient characterization of rich nonverbal data.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use automated coding to test whether facial action and head motion exhibited by young adults and their clinical interviewers during a widely used suicide assessment can identify suicidal participants.
METHODS: Participant

PURPOSE: To study the independence of gesture and verbal language production. The authors assessed whether gesture can be semantically compensatory in cases of verbal language impairment and whether speakers with aphasia and control participants use similar depiction techniques in gesture.
METHOD: The informativeness of gesture was assessed in 3 forced-choice studies, in which raters assessed the topic of the speaker's message in video clips of 13 speakers with moderate aphasia and 12 speakers with severe aphasia, who were performing a communication test (the Scenario Test). Both groups were

This review compares how humans process action and language sequences produced by other humans. On the one hand, we identify commonalities between action and language processing in terms of cognitive mechanisms (e.g., perceptual segmentation, predictive processing, integration across multiple temporal scales), neural resources (e.g., the left inferior frontal cortex), and processing algorithms (e.g., comprehension based on changes in signal entropy). On the other hand, drawing on sign language with its particularly strong motor component, we also highlight what differentiates (both oral and si

Spencer and Hanley (2003) showed that Welsh-speaking children aged between 5 and 7 years who were learning to read Welsh (a transparent orthography) performed significantly better at reading both real words and nonwords than did English-speaking children living in Wales who were learning to read English (a deep orthography). In this study, the reading skills of these children were reexamined three years later, during their sixth year of formal reading instruction. The children learning to read English continued to perform poorly at reading low- and medium-frequency irregular words but no diffe

Interpretation of nonverbal cues was tested in 12 white, male, self-admitting rapists. All rapists were being treated for depression and were between the ages of 20 and 31. All victims were female strangers who had been observed in a social setting. The rapists and 12 age- and class-matched male controls viewed 10 male and 10 female volunteers during a specific gambling trial. Rapists were found to be more accurate than controls in interpreting both female and male nonverbal cues. This enhanced ability was hypothesized to be due to pathological expressions of intimacy and sexuality in the rapi

Sexual intercourse is discussed as a form of nonverbal human communication. During periods of good health, sexual intercourse contributes to the sense of personal worth and to the integrity of marriage. Following episodes of ill health, unresolved sexual difficulties contribute to loss of self-esteem, constitute barriers to clinical progress, and enhance marital discord. Speech pathologists are advised to give more attention to the sexuality of their patients, especially to those who are aphasic. With proper training, selected speech pathologists may find themselves ideally suited to incorpora

This study presents a coding system for observation and monitoring of changes in the interactive behaviour between patient and therapist during music therapy sessions. The coding scheme was developed from a psychodynamic framework and mainly consists of four behavioural classes: Verbal Communication, Nonverbal Communication, Countenance, and Sonorous Musical Communication. The 15 minutes in the middle of each videotape concerning the first active music therapy session--based on the sonorous musical improvisation--were coded. Subjects were children (4 boys; 3 girls) ages 3 to 10 years (M age =

Representing objects in terms of their kinds enables inferences based on the long-term knowledge made available through kind concepts. For example, children readily use lexical knowledge linked to familiar kind concepts to disambiguate new words (e.g., "find the toma"): they exclude members of familiar kinds falling under familiar kind labels (e.g., a ball) as potential referents and link new labels to available unfamiliar objects (e.g., a funnel), a phenomenon dubbed as 'mutual exclusivity'. Younger infants' failure in mutual exclusivity tasks has been commonly interpreted as a limitation of

INTRODUCTION: Nursery care to patients with serious disorders of language expression is complex and arises nervousness in the patient, his relatives and in the professionals caring for him.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim has been to design a number of drawings which allow us to improve our ability to connect with patients suffering from serious disorders of verbal language.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have applied a booklet of drawings, representing the most common needs of this kind of patients, to a group of 34 patients affected of severe dysarthria or motor aphasia.
RESULTS: Most of our patients have u
