Characteristics of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds who die by suicide: A systematic review.

We aimed to estimate the prevalence of clinical and modifiable sociodemographic characteristics of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds who died by suicide and, where possible, compare them to the majority population. Databases were searched for studies published between 01/01/2000-19/12/2023. Absolute and relative prevalence estimates of characteristics were reported by minority group (Indigenous; migrant; other ethnic minority) then stratified by continent and, where applicable, migrant sub-type and ethnicity. A narrative synthesis was conducted with moderate-high quality studies. We

An insight into the microphysical attributes of northwest Pacific tropical cyclones.

Northwestern Pacific (NWP) tropical cyclones (TCs) impose a severe threat to the life and economy of the people living in East Asian countries. The microphysical features, mainly the raindrop size distributions (RSD) of TCs that improve the modeling simulation and rainfall estimation algorithms, are limited to case studies, and an extensive understanding of TCs' RSD is still scarce over the northwest Pacific. Here, we examine a comprehensive outlook on disparities in microphysical attributes of NWP TCs with radial distance and storm type, using sixteen years of disdrometer, ground-based radar,

Racial and ethnic disparities in preterm birth: the role of stressful life events.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine racial-ethnic disparities in stressful life events before and during pregnancy and to assess the relationship between stressful life events and racial-ethnic disparities in preterm birth. STUDY DESIGN: Using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of a sample of 33,542 women from 19 states who were delivered of a live-born infant in 2000. Principal component analysis was used to group 13 stressful life events into 4 stress constructs: emotional, financial, partner-related, and t

Race and ethnicity in pediatric OCD: An exploratory study of a clinical North American sample.

BACKGROUND: Influences of race and ethnicity have received limited attention in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), despite noted importance in other psychiatric diseases. We sought to compare racially defined groups presenting to a North American tertiary care pediatric OCD subspecialty clinic. METHODS: Clinician-rated and parent/child-reported information was extracted from a research data registry comprising OCD-affected youth assessed between 2011 and 2018. The study population was aggregated into racial groups, defined as Caucasian, Asian, and "other." Country of origin and sp

Patrilineal background of esophageal cancer and gastric cardia cancer patients in a Chaoshan high-risk area in China.

The Taihang Mountain range of north-central China, the Southern region area of Fujian province, and the Chaoshan plain of Guangdong province are 3 major regions in China well known for their high incidence of esophageal cancer (EC). These areas also exhibit high incidences of gastric cardia cancer (GCC). The ancestors of the Chaoshanese, now the major inhabitants in the Chaoshan plain, were from north-central China. We hypothesized that EC and GCC patients in Chaoshan areas share a common ancestry with Taihang Mountain patients. We analyzed 16 East Asian-specific Y-chromosome biallelic markers

Sudden cardiac death in young athletes; a literature review and special considerations in Asia.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young athlete is rare, but catastrophic. Exercise acts as a risk factor for SCD in people with cardiovascular disease. A diversity of cardiovascular disorders including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital coronary anomalies, arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathy, aortic rupture due to Marfan syndrome, myocarditis, valvular disease and electrical disorders (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome), as well as commotio cordis represent the common causes of SCD in young athletes. As the outcome of lethal ca

Understanding the Acceptability and Uptake of HPV Self-Sampling Amongst Women Under- or Never-Screened for Cervical Cancer in Toronto (Ontario, Canada): An Intervention Study Protocol.

Cervical cancer remains a global public health concern, even though scientific advancements have made the disease almost entirely preventable. With the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer, and the subsequent improvement in screening technology, there is potential to improve access and coverage of cervical screening with the introduction of HPV self-sampling. In Ontario, Canada, a province with a cytology-based screening program (i.e., Pap test), women who identify as South Asian, West Asian, Middle Eastern and North African have some of the lowest rates of screening, an

New trend in the epidemiology of thalassaemia.

Thalassaemia is the most common monogenic disorder worldwide. It is common in areas with prevalent malaria as thalassaemic red cells provide immunity against the parasite. The incidence of thalassaemia carriers is high in regions such as Mediterranean, Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and South China. In the past few decades, migrants from the thalassaemia prevalent countries to non-prevalent countries, mainly North America and Central and North Europe, are rapidly increasing in number. The non-prevalent countries may not have established pre-natal screening system for thalassa

The effect of Indian or Anglo dietary preference on the incidence of diabetes in Pima Indians.

OBJECTIVE: In short-term studies, adoption of a traditional diet is associated with reduction in metabolic abnormalities often found in populations experiencing rapid lifestyle changes. We examined the long-term effects of a self-assessed traditional or nontraditional dietary pattern on the development of type 2 diabetes in 165 nondiabetic Pima Indians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed in 1988 by a quantitative food frequency method, and subjects were asked to classify their diet as "Indian," "Anglo," or "mixed." The Indian diet reflects a preference for Sonoran-style

Cortical thickness alterations in afro-descendants with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: An exploratory analysis.

The impact of schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar. disorder (BD) on brain structure is not fully understood, with most evidence derived from European, North American, and Asian populations. Our study aims to evaluate these morphometric changes in cortical thickness(CT) among Afro-descendants and indigenous people. We included neuroimaging data from 23 SZ patients, 20 BD patients, and 21 healthy controls (HC), aged between 22 and 31 years (mean age = 25 years). CT of 68 regions, as defined by the Desikan-Killiany atlas, was obtained using FreeSurfer. Statistical analysis involved analysis of covaria

Common Dermatologic Conditions in Skin of Color.

Individuals with skin of color represent a diverse population of racial and ethnic backgrounds, including but not limited to Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American or Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, and Middle Eastern or North African. Dermatologic health disparities exist in part because of systemic racism and are exacerbated by inadequate physician training and a lack of high-quality research on skin diagnoses that disproportionately affect people with skin of color. These conditions, which include postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, keloids, dermat

Comparative B cell epitope profiling in Japanese and North American cohorts of MDA5+ dermatomyositis patients reveals a direct association between immune repertoire and pulmonary mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibody-positive (MDA5+) DM patients exhibit clinical features that vary by geographical and ethnic/genetic distribution. The objective of this study was to investigate whether B cell epitope profiles and corresponding clinical features distinguished two independent cohorts of MDA5+ DM. METHODS: ELISA-based methods were used to determine the relationship between antibody recognition of 155 overlapping amino acid MDA5 subfragments and clinical features of 17 MDA5+ DM patients from Japan. Associations between clinical features and sta

Blood mercury reporting in NHANES: identifying Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and multiracial groups.

INTRODUCTION: Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans are a potentially high-risk group for dietary exposure to methylmercury through fish consumption. However, blood mercury levels in this group have not been identified in recent reports of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 1999-2002. METHODS: We used NHANES data from 1999-2002 to obtain population estimates of blood mercury levels among women of childbearing age classified as belonging to the "other" racial/ethnic group (Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and multiracial; n = 140). Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia in American Indians.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) trends among American Indians (AI) using population-based data. STUDY DESIGN: GTN incidence, by race and age, was calculated using data collected by the New Mexico Tumor Registry over 29 years (1973-2001). Live birth, pregnancy and women at risk were tabulated using data derived from the state's vital record annual reports and from the registry. Statistical methods included trends analysis and Poisson regression. There is no national registry in the United States for all GTN. Therefore, the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Resu

Parkinson's disease variant detection and disclosure: PD GENEration, a North American study.

Variants in seven genes (LRRK2, GBA1, PRKN, SNCA, PINK1, PARK7 and VPS35) have been formally adjudicated as causal contributors to Parkinson's disease; however, individuals with Parkinson's disease are often unaware of their genetic status since clinical testing is infrequently offered. As a result, genetic information is not incorporated into clinical care, and variant-targeted precision medicine trials struggle to enrol people with Parkinson's disease. Understanding the yield of genetic testing using an established gene panel in a large, geographically diverse North American population would

UK Food Standards Agency Workshop Report: an investigation of the relative contributions of diet and sunlight to vitamin D status.

The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) convened an international group of scientific experts to review three Agency-funded projects commissioned to provide evidence for the relative contributions of two sources, dietary vitamin D intake and skin exposure to UVB rays from sunlight, to vitamin D status. This review and other emerging evidence are intended to inform any future risk assessment undertaken by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. Evidence was presented from randomised controlled trials to quantify the amount of vitamin D required to maintain a serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD

A Literature Review on Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare disease of the muscles that presents with painless weakness of the muscles. The patients usually have hypokalemia and hyperthyroidism with elevations in the level of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The muscle weakness is usually transient, and the patients in many cases suffer from recurrent episodes of muscle paralysis. This flaccid muscle paralysis predominantly affects the proximal and lower extremities group of muscles more than the distal and upper extremity muscles. This condition is one of the drastic complications of Graves's dise
