A clinical and chromosomal study on those exposed to the atomic bomb and their offspring.

Presented in this paper is the data from clinical laboratory examination of 50 Korean atomic-bomb survivors (Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, 1945). Of them, 15 survivors were karyotyped from their lymphocyte culture for both “stable” and “unstable” types of chromosomal aberrations. Eight of their offspring were also tested for the chromosomal changes and SCE as well. The results are as follows: 1. All survivors were found to have suffered from various diseases, particularly from respiratory diseases. Two had malignancies, viz., one case having squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix and anoth

One perspective on stakeholder involvement at Hanford.

The Hanford nuclear site in Washington State had a major role in the production of nuclear weapons materials during the Manhattan Project in World War II and during the Cold War that followed. The production of weapons-grade radionuclides produced a large amount of radioactive byproducts that have been stored since the mid-1900s at the Hanford Site. These by-product radionuclides have leaked from containment facilities into the groundwater, contaminated buildings used for radionuclide processing, and also contaminated the nuclear reactors used to produce weapons-grade uranium and plutonium. Malignant lymphoma in an atomic-bomb survivor.

Atomic bomb survivors outside of Japan are few and often hard to follow-up. Spinal malignant lymphoma among these survivors is rare in established studies from Japan or the United States. Here, we report an 81-year-old woman, who experienced the atomic bomb explosion in Nagasaki when she was 19 years old, who presented with papillary thyroid carcinoma when she was 70 years old. Both follicular lymphoma over the right elbow region and vertebral malignant lymphoma were found when she turned 81 years old. Bone scan did not show any increased uptake of isotope. However, thoracolumbar spine magneti

Unstable-type chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes from individuals living near Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

The Semipalatinsk nuclear test site area is considered to have been highly contaminated with radioactive fallout during 40 years of continuous nuclear testing. Individuals living near the nuclear test site are considered to have been exposed to both internal and external radiation. In order to assess the effects of prolonged radiation, a chromosome analysis was performed in lymphocytes from 123 people living in three villages, Dolon, Sarjar and Kaynar, and 46 control people in Kokpekty. A micronucleus assay was also conducted in 233 people in six different contaminated villages and one control

Occupational radiation exposure: population studies.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in the medical setting differs from the acute exposure received by survivors of atomic bomb blasts. Yet, atomic bomb survivors' disease and mortality outcomes have been the standard data source on the effects of ionizing radiation on humans. Therefore, the prevailing estimated risks of ionizing radiation may not apply to radiologic technologists and other medical radiation workers. Carefully designed epidemiological trials provide evidence that helps determine the strength of association between exposure and onset of disease in selected populations.

Disease subject to presumptive service connection (radiation risk activity)--VA. Final rule.

This document amends Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adjudication regulations concerning diseases presumed to be the result of exposure to ionizing radiation. This amendment is necessary to implement Public Law 103-446, the Veterans' Benefits Improvements Act, which provides that the term "radiation risk activity" includes the onsite participation in a test involving the atmospheric detonation of a nuclear device by the United States and by other governments. The intended effect of this amendment is to extend the presumption of service connection for radiogenic disabilities to those vetera

Cancer incidence in atomic bomb survivors. Part I: Use of the tumor registries in Hiroshima and Nagasaki for incidence studies.

More than 30 years ago, population-based tumor registries were established in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This report, the first of a series of papers on cancer incidence, describes methodological aspects of the tumor registries and discusses issues of data quality in the context of the Life Span Study (LSS) cohort, the major atomic bomb survivor population. The tumor registries in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are characterized by active case ascertainment based on abstraction of medical records at area hospitals, augmented by tissue registries operational in the area and a number of clinical and pathol

Intrauterine radiation exposures and mental retardation.

Small head size and mental retardation have been known as effects of intrauterine exposure to ionizing radiation since the 1920s. In the 1950s, studies of Japanese atomic-bomb survivors revealed that at 4-17 wk of gestation, the greater the dose, the smaller the brain (and head size), and that beginning at 0.5 Gy (50 rad) in Hiroshima, mental retardation increased in frequency with increasing dose. No other excess of birth defects was observed. Otake and Schull (1984) pointed out that the period of susceptibility to mental retardation coincided with that for proliferation and migration of neur

What was different about exposures reported by male Australian Gulf War veterans for the 1991 Persian Gulf War, compared with exposures reported for other deployments?

This study identified chemical and environmental exposures specifically associated with the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Exposures were self-reported in a postal questionnaire, in the period of 2000-2002, by 1,424 Australian male Persian Gulf War veterans in relation to their 1991 Persian Gulf War deployment and by 625 Persian Gulf War veterans and 514 members of a military comparison group in relation to other active deployments. Six of 28 investigated exposures were experienced more frequently during the Persian Gulf War than during other deployments; these were exposure to smoke (odds ratio [OR],

Radiation Exposure and Health Effects - is it Time to Reassess the Real Consequences?

Our acceptance of exposure to radiation is somewhat schizophrenic. We accept that the use of high doses of radiation is still one of the most valuable weapons in our fight against cancer, and believe that bathing in radioactive spas is beneficial. On the other hand, as a species, we are fearful of exposure to man-made radiation as a result of accidents related to power generation, even though we understand that the doses are orders of magnitude lower than those we use everyday in medicine. The 70th anniversary of the detonation of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was marked in 2015.

[Results of a cytogenetic study of populations with different radiation risks in the Semipalatinsk region].

A cytogenetic study was conducted for the first time on human populations neighboring the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (STS) and exposed to ionizing radiation for a long period of time. In populations with the extreme and maximum radiation risks, high frequencies of radiation-induced chromosomal markers, including acentric fragments (1.99 +/- 0.10 per 100 cells), dicentrics (0.23 +/- 0.01), ring chromosomes (0.38 +/- 0.14), and stable chromosomal aberrations (1.17 +/- 0.02), were found. These frequencies significantly exceeded those in control populations. The spectrum of chromosomal aberra

Urinary iodine levels and thyroid diseases in children; comparison between Nagasaki and Chernobyl.

We evaluated the incidence of childhood thyroid diseases and urinary iodine levels in Nagasaki, Japan and in Gomel, Belarus, which was greatly radio-contaminated by the Chernobyl accident, in order to obtain the comparative data of thyroid diseases between iodine-rich (Japan) and -deficient (Belarus) areas. In Nagasaki, the median level of urinary iodine, measured by ammonium persulfate digestion in microplate method, was 362.9 microg/L. In order to evaluate the geographical differences in Japan, other samples were collected in Hamamatsu and in South Kayabe, Hokkaido, where the median levels w

Mortality from motor neuron disease in Japan, 1950-1990: association with radioactive fallout from atmospheric weapons testing.

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a progressive and invariably fatal disease affecting the nuclei of the pyramidal tract and anterior horn cells. Despite intensive research into environmental agents associated with the onset or course of the disease, there is no single factor that can be confidently linked over time with regional, national or international variations in mortality rates. However, unusual variations in MND mortality rate in Japan from 1950-1990 were found to correlate highly significantly with variations in radioactive fallout released by atmospheric weapons testing in the Pacific.

Polycythemia vera among participants of a nuclear weapons test.

Two cases of polycythemia vera and two cases of suspected polycythemia vera were found among 3,217 nuclear test participants present during the detonation of the nuclear device, "Smoky," on Aug 31, 1957, and traced through December 1981. The observed occurrence of four cases of polycythemia vera in a group this size significantly exceeds that expected. However, the small individual whole-body doses of radiation reported for these four participants makes the association with ionizing radiation tenuous, although this was the only known unusual risk factor.

The psychological effects of ionizing radiation.

This paper presents a case study of eleven men who were exposed to non-background ionizing radiation as active participants in the United States' atmospheric nuclear tests. Each of the subjects has developed a virtually identical complex of debilitating psychiatric symptoms. The content of these symptoms is almost entirely focused upon the health effects of the radiation to which each of the subjects was exposed. This symptom complex appears to comprise a syndrome. The symptom structure and course of this syndrome suggests three hypotheses: The syndrome appears to be a pathological development

Chromosome aberrations among the Yanomamma Indians.

The chromosomes of leucocytes cultured from the peripheral blood of 49 primitive Yanomama Indians of Venezuela were studied to determine the types and frequencies of aberrations in a human population not exposed to the same exogenous agents as civilized man. In all but one instance, 100 cells per individual were scored. In 13 cases, we found one or more cells with multiple complex breaks and rearrangements, represented by tetracentric, tricentric, and numerous dicentric chromosomes. From the standpoint of chromosomal damage, these cells are among the most abnormal cells yet described in vivo i

[Chromosomal instability parameters in the population affected by nuclear explosions at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site].

A population genetic survey of 149 persons who were born and have permanently lived in the contaminated zones of the Semipalatinsk region has been performed. A cytogenetic study has demonstrated that the frequency of aberrant cells is 1.7-3 times higher than control parameters. The total frequencies of chromosome aberrations are 3.43 +/- 0.48, 3.1 +/- 0.3, 1.8 +/- 0.2, and 1.15 +/- 0.17 aberrations per 100 cells in the populations of the extreme radiation risk (ERR), maximum radiation risk (MaxRR), minimum radiation risk (MinRR), and control zones, respectively. Discussion: severe mental retardation and cancer among atomic bomb survivors exposed in utero.

When I was in medical school, Douglas Power Murphy, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, told us of his inexpensive, simple study of "microcephaly" and mental retardation in newborn infants whose mothers had received therapeutic radiation early in pregnancy. His review of the literature and mail inquiry of other obstetrics centers in the United States revealed 14 published cases (Murphy, '28) and 16 unpublished (Goldstein and Murphy, '29). Here am I, 52 years later, still updating his findings.

Analysis of chromosome aberrations in atomic bomb survivors for dose assessment: studies at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation from 1968 to 1993.

Exposure to ionizing radiation causes damage to living cells, especially to DNA in the cell nucleus. The degree of this cellular damage depends on the amount of radiation administered. This review discusses current findings concerning radiation-induced chromosome aberrations that were produced in 1945 and that can still be observed in the somatic cells of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The scoring methods of G-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization are compared. In addition, some findings concerning chromosomal aberrations in citizens of the former Soviet Union affect

Did atomic bomb radiation influence the incidence of retinoblastoma in Nagasaki and Hiroshima?

The authors studied the effect of atomic bomb radiation in Nagasaki and Hiroshima on the incidence of retinoblastoma by examining the history of exposure to atomic bomb radiation among the grandparents and parents of retinoblastoma patients in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Of 85 patients born in Nagasaki Prefecture from 1965 to 1986 and in Hiroshima Prefecture from 1966 to 1986, 42 had records to whether or not their grandparents and parents had been exposed to atomic bomb radiation. Seven had parents or grandparents exposed to atomic bomb radiation. These patients showed neither a high incidence of
