Investigating midwives and nurses reporting of 'infant feeding at hospital discharge': an online survey across NSW Australia.

BACKGROUND: The collection of data on 'infant feeding at hospital discharge' is used to monitor breastfeeding outcomes, health service benchmarking, and research. While some Australian states have clear definitions of this data collection point, there is no operational definition of 'infant feeding at hospital discharge' in the Australian state of New South Wales. Little is known about how midwives interpret the term 'infant feeding at hospital discharge', in particular, the timeframe used to calculate these important indicators. The purpose of this study was to explore midwives' and nurses' p

Attitudes and practices of auxiliary nurse midwives and accredited social health activists in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar regarding polio immunization in India.

Although India was removed from the list of polio endemic countries in January 2012, maintaining the focus on polio vaccination is critically important to prevent reintroduction of the virus. In 2009-2010, we conducted a study to assess the attitudes and practices of frontline health workers in India regarding polio immunization in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. More than 95% of auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) and accredited social health activists (ASHAs) agreed that polio supplementary immunization campaigns helped in increasing acceptance of all vaccines. The majority of ANMs (60-70%) and ASHAs (

Was there evidence of occupational exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among nurse midwives ten years into the epidemic in Zambia?

A cross sectional study was conducted to determine occupational factors associated with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)) infection. The survey covered 30 health institutions throughout Zambia. A total of 370 consenting midwives took part in the study. The main outcome measures were percentage of midwives reporting adverse occupational exposures and HIV status. Out of 370 midwives, 146 (39.5%) were positive for HIV infection. Of the 370 respondents, 48 (13.0%) thought that they were HIV infected. None of these 48 midwives thought she became infected because of occupational exposure to HI

Perspectives of providing magnesium sulfate to patients with preeclampsia and eclampsia: A qualitative study amongst nurse-midwives in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia and eclampsia are among the leading direct causes of maternal death and morbidity worldwide. Up to 34% of maternal deaths in Tanzania are due to preeclampsia/ eclampsia. Magnesium sulfate is recommended for preventing and treating convulsions in women with Preeclampsia or eclampsia. However, evidence suggests limited knowledge of its dosage and proper toxicity assessment after administration among health care providers. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study explored nurse-midwives' perspectives on providing MgSO4 to patients with preeclampsia or eclampsia in Tanzania. MATERIA

Exploring Barriers and Bridging Gaps: Perspectives of Nurses, Midwives, and Lady Health Workers in the Implementation of Emergency Obstetric Care.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Maternal mortality is a global concern primarily due to preventable obstetric complications. Challenges in implementing Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) in developing nations hinder effective reduction of these deaths. Our objective was to identify key challenges in EmOC practices among frontline healthcare providers, assess the severity and frequency of these barriers, and evaluate gaps in resources, training, and institutional support needed for effective resolution. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed EmOC knowledge, practical skills, and challenges among N

Knowledge of Basic Neonatal Resuscitation and Associated Factors Among Midwives and Nurses in Public Health Institutions in Eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is a means to restore life to a baby from the state of asphyxia. It is a single intervention of birth asphyxia. Over 1.2 million African babies are supposed to die in the first four weeks of their life and many of them in the first 24 hours of birth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The major cause of early neonatal death is neonatal asphyxia, which can be prevented by neonatal resuscitation. However, there is limited evidence on midwives' and nurses' knowledge of neonatal resuscitation in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of midwives a

Psychometric evaluation of a novel tool for assessing gestational diabetes and hypertension care: knowledge, attitudes, and practices of midwives and nurses.

While standardized assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to gestational diabetes and hypertension is possible with a valid tool, existing research remains limited. This prospective validation study aimed to develop and validate a novel tool to assess the KAP of midwives and obstetric nurses. We included 125 midwives and obstetric nurses who routinely care for patients with gestational diabetes and hypertension. The tool demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha): knowledge (0.729, 95% CI, 0.654-0.776), attitude (0.756, 95% CI, 0.690-0.814), and practice

Improving Tanzanian student nurse-midwives' knowledge, skills and attitude in postpartum hemorrhage prevention through simulation-based education: a pre-post quasi experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal deaths in Tanzania, highlighting the critical need for effective training for student nurse-midwives in ordinary diploma programs. The study aimed to determine the changes in knowledge, skills, self-confidence, and satisfaction in preventing and managing postpartum hemorrhage among student nurse-midwives after the simulation-based education method is being used. METHODS: A pre-post quasi-experimental study design without a control group was conducted to assess the impact of simulation-based education on student nurse-midwives' k

Insomnia Partially Mediates the Relationship of Occupational Stress with Mental Health Among Shift Working Nurses and Midwives in Polish Hospitals.

PURPOSE: Insufficient sleep increases sensitivity to chronic stress and may be a precursor to the deterioration of mental health and the development of burnout. The aim of our study was to verify whether symptoms of insomnia mediate the relationship of occupational stress with mental health among nurses who work shifts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analyses included 117 female nurses and midwives who work shifts. They filled in the 16-item Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire (ERIQ) assessing occupational stress, the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, the q
