Pulmonary valvuloplasty as an alternative to surgery in the pediatric patient: implications for nursing.

Recent innovations in the use of balloon catheters to dilate stenosis have made it possible to successfully perform balloon valvuloplasty (BV) on stenotic intracardiac valves. BV is fast becoming the treatment of choice for isolated valvular pulmonary stenosis (IVPS) in pediatric patients. IVPS and other obstructive lesions involving the right ventricle and pulmonary arteries occur in 25% to 30% of all persons with congenital heart disease. Current data suggest that use of BV for IVPS provides both short- and long-term hemodynamic relief and eliminates the need for open heart surgery. BV is al

Nurses' perspectives on implementing pediatric palliative care: a qualitative participatory study on the emerging role of the advanced practice nurse.

UNLABELLED: The implementation of Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) in hospital settings places considerable demands on nursing staff, particularly during early phases of change. This study explored nurses' experiences, attitudes, and perceived support needs during the early implementation of a PPC concept at a tertiary pediatric hospital in Austria. A qualitative participatory design was applied. Four moderated focus group discussions were conducted with 18 registered nurses working on two pediatric wards where PPC beds were newly introduced. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and

"I can't be the nurse I want to be": Counter-stories of moral distress in nurses' narratives of pediatric oncology caregiving.

As a term used in nursing and other health professions to describe when one is prevented by institutional constraints from pursuing the right course of action, moral distress has gained traction to examine the effects of restructuring on health and social care providers. Using a critical narrative methodology, this paper presents the counter-stories of nine pediatric oncology nurses in Ontario, Canada, whose stories illustrate the embeddedness of their caregiving and moral distress within institutional contexts that leave them stretched thin amongst multiple caregiving and administrative deman

Evaluation of the effectiveness of training on pediatric nurses' attitudes toward children during invasive procedures.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization and invasive procedures constitute major sources of stress and anxiety for children. Nurses' attitudes during these procedures play a pivotal role in mitigating children's negative psychological responses and in promoting atraumatic care. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative educational intervention in improving pediatric nurses' attitudes toward children during invasive procedures, as measured using a validated pediatric-specific attitude scale (ÇİTÖ). METHODS: A single-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was co

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome: attitudes among pediatric residents and nurses towards fetal and neonatal management.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the attitudes of pediatric residents and nurses towards fetal/neonatal management of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), and their basis. METHODS: Pediatric residents and nurses from three cardiac centers completed a survey with hypothetical scenarios in which their own fetuses or newborns had HLHS. While Institution A performs many HLHS surgeries, Institution C performs very few. RESULTS: A total of 43% of residents and 50% of nurses would terminate an affected pregnancy. More experience (4 to 7 years, p = 0.04; >7 years, p = 0.05) and employment at institution C

Relationship between nurses' assessments of perfusion and toe temperature in pediatric patients with cardiovascular disease.

This descriptive study reports on 17 children who had undergone open-heart surgery. The children were assessed for 6 hours after surgery and once at 18 hours after operation to determine relationship between two scales assessing peripheral perfusion and the temperature of the great toe. There were 119 individual assessments. The scales used to assess the quality of peripheral pulses, extremity warmth, and capillary refill were (1) those representative of assessment scales used in common nursing practice and (2) more specific scales that attempt to "quantify" the qualitative assessment of perip

The Effect of an Acupressure Training Program for Pediatric Nurses Caring for Children Undergoing Chemotherapy.

Acupressure is a nonpharmacological technique that can be used to control chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in children with cancer. To use acupressure as a strategy for managing CINV, oncology nurses must have adequate knowledge and skills to implement the technique in clinical practice. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of an acupressure training program for pediatric nurses caring for children undergoing chemotherapy. We used a quasi-experimental design. Our sample populations included a convenience sample of 36 pediatric nurses and a purposive sample of 45 children under

Describing Pediatric Emergency Department Nurse Staffing Models and Unit Characteristics in Pediatric Hospitals in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Hospitals across the United States experience critical nursing shortages and high turnover across all nursing roles. High nurse vacancy rates present ongoing challenges for emergency departments and may negatively affect patient care. Detrimental effects include overcrowding, longer waiting times, and delayed or missed nursing care. Amid a national nursing crisis, little is known regarding the staffing strategies employed by pediatric emergency departments. The purpose of this study was to provide a foundational description of the current staffing models and unit characteristics
