Evaluation of Makaton in practice by children's nursing students.

The number of service users with communication difficulties is increasing. Training in the use of alternative communication and aids, such as Makaton, is valuable and should be made available. to nurses and other healthcare professionals, in particular to students in the first year of their nursing degree. Early introduction of Makaton could encourage staff to be proactive in their communication skills throughout their career and inspire other workers to learn the same techniques. The author discusses the evaluation and use of basic signing in Makaton following a session for children's nursing

Nursing and midwifery education, practice, and issues in Israel.

Nurses deliver most of Israel's healthcare services, yet its nurse per population ratio is only 5.9 per 1000, one of the lowest in the developed world. For several years, the managers of the profession have been pushing to upgrade nursing and to move it into the academic sphere. The semiskilled qualification of the practical nurse has been eliminated and training programs for registered nurses are being transformed from diploma training to academic degree programs. A midwifery license is accessible only to registered nurses who take a further 1 year of advanced training and sit the State Midwi

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome: implications for nursing practice.

Lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin are antiphospholipid antibodies. The presence of either or both antiphospholipid antibodies may result in antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, which is typified by recurrent venous or arterial thrombosis, recurrent fetal loss, and thrombocytopenia. Many features of this syndrome are not well understood, including its prevalence, how and why antiphospholipid autoantibodies develop, and their definitive role in disease states. In clinical practice, nurses care for patients and families with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome who require treatment, education

Gynopia in nursing practice: the case of urethral catheterization.

A pilot study of catheterized women was designed to investigate their perceptions of pain and discomfort during the procedure. The study aimed to test the feasibility of conducting a larger randomized controlled trial. Problems were encountered during the execution of the study, due to the need to conform to established principles in clinical research. Restrictions on access to patients impinged upon the opportunity to 'cast the net wide' in order to generate meaningful data.

A classical view of the theory-practice gap in nursing.

The perceived problem of the theory-practice gap is built upon the assumption that theory can and must be directly applied to nursing practice, otherwise it is irrelevant. Whilst the spirit in which this claim is made is healthy, the assumption is false. An examination of the Greek origins of theory and practice show that the ancient Greeks had different terms for the different types of knowledge contained within theory and within practice. The type of knowledge associated with practice could not be taught through theory, nor well represented in theoretical terms. The knowledge of the bicycle

FHSA in Wales trains receptionists and practice nurses.

Local health strategies had identified training for GP and clinic receptionists as a way to help meet targets on reducing unwanted teenage pregnancy and sexual health. As the "gateway" to the surgery, receptionists have a vital part to play in making young people feel welcome. The practice nurse is also a frontline contact person, often being the first health professional that a young person sees. Gwynedd Family Health Services Authority asked the FPA (Family Planning Association) to provide a pilot course for a group of receptionists and practice nurses to address their awareness of young peo

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: liability in nursing practice.

In the summer of 1991, the malpractice case Reyes v Houston International Hospital et al was settled for an amount in excess of $600,000. The case involved the psychiatric treatment received by Marjorie Reyes, a 27-year-old Latin-American mother of three, who was admitted to a psychiatric unit in late October 1986 with a diagnosis of atypical psychosis. Malpractice was charged because her treatment failed to meet any reasonably expected outcome for atypical psychosis. In fact, Reyes developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) as a direct result of the antipsychotic medications she was admin

HIV infection in women. Implications for nursing practice.

Much remains to be explained regarding women with HIV infection or AIDS. Interest in determining whether the natural history of the disease or the clinical manifestations are gender specific is leading to more research focused on women. The female roles of childbearer and caretaker evoke ethical issues that are unique to this epidemic and that can impact on the development and delivery of health care services. Women at the greatest risk for HIV disease are not likely to form coalitions to advocate for services, research dollars, and education. They need advocates and assistance in becoming uni

Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy: A Practical Overview on Its Indications, Placement Conditions, Management, and Nursing Care.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding represents the most effective and safest option for feeding patients with an impaired or diminished swallowing ability, despite having a functioning digestive system. The use of PEG has evolved to be useful in many situations beyond degenerative neuromuscular disorders, with an increasing body of evidence supporting the advantages of PEG tubes in oncologic and pediatric patients. Risk factors for complications after PEG tube placement include acute and chronic conditions associated with malnutrition and several organic disorders. Patients suita

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of General Nurses, Specialist Nurses, Resident Nurses, and Nursing Students Regarding Informed Consent: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Background: Informed consent is an essential ethical and legal process that safeguards patient autonomy, integrity, and rights in healthcare. Although it has traditionally been associated with medical practice, the expanding scope of nursing practice and increased professional autonomy require a clearer understanding of nurses' roles in this process. Given nurses' continuous and close contact with patients, examining their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding informed consent is essential to ensure ethical standards and patient safety. Objectives: This scoping review will map and synt

Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice: Impact on Improving Sedation Practice in Critical Care.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Prolonged mechanical ventilation results from deeper levels of sedation. This may lead to impaired respiratory muscle functioning that develops into pneumonia, increases antibiotic use, increases delirium risk, and increases length of hospitalization. A trauma and surgical intensive care unit interdisciplinary team conducted a quality improvement project to lighten sedation levels and shorten mechanical ventilation time. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The project included multimodal elements to improve sedation practice. Standardizing the spontaneous awakening trial algorithm

Practice nurse provision of early medical abortion in general practice: opportunities and limitations.

Approximately one in three Australian women with an unintended pregnancy will have an abortion, yet significant barriers remain to ensure the delivery of equitable and timely medical abortion services, including lack of trained providers, high out-of-pocket costs, abortion stigma, conscientious objection and large geographical distance to services. Practice nurses can be suitably trained to provide early medical abortion in general practice; however, there remain several key limitations to the implementation of nurse-led models of care. This forum article discusses these limitations, including
