Transition management as an intervention for survivor syndrome.

In today's health care environment of merged organizations, downsizing and restructuring, employees can be experiencing a debilitating syndrome called "layoff survivor syndrome." This syndrome can have a crippling effect on workers and organizations as employees struggle to adapt to the changed working environment. This article represents my self-reflection as a nursing unit manager who personally experienced survivor sickness and witnessed its impact on the unit staff that I was leading at the time. The work of Noer (1993) is explored to clarify the syndrome and describe how the nursing staff

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

See one, do one, teach one--is this still how it works? A comparison of the medical and nursing professions in the teaching of practical procedures.

A survey of 80 junior doctors and nurses was performed to compare the methods of teaching medical and nursing students in eight common practical procedures. Nurses were more likely to have received formal teaching and to be supervised when first performing a procedure. Some 42% percent of doctors felt inadequately trained to carry out a practical procedure safely when performing it alone for the first time compared with 7% of nurses. This study confirms that much of the training of doctors in practical procedures is still received on an informal basis, compared with that of nurses. It also rev

Complications of dermal filler treatments – a registry-based study from Finland.

The popularity of dermal filler treatments is increasing in the Nordic countries. In Finland, legislation does not mandate healthcare training for those performing dermal filler treatments, potentially leading to increased complications. This registry-based study aimed to characterize complaints on dermal filler treatments received by Finnish Authorities, using data from (1) Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (TUKES), (2) the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira), (3) the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV), and (4) Regional State Administrative Agency (

A Review of Interprofessional Variation in Education: Challenges and Considerations in the Growth of Advanced Practice Providers in Emergency Medicine.

The employment and utilization of advanced practice providers (APPs) in the emergency department has been steadily increasing. Physicians, physician assistants (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs) have vastly different requirements for admission to graduate programs, clinical exposure, and postgraduate training. It is important that as supervisory physicians, patients, hospital administrators, and lawmakers, we understand the differences to best create a collaborative, supportive, and educational framework within which PAs/NPs can work effectively as part of a care team. This paper reviews the

The role of biobehavioral, environmental, and social forces on oral health disparities in frail and functionally dependent nursing home elders.

The purpose of this article is to review the literature on and discuss how interactions between bio-behavioral aging, nursing home environments, and social forces shaping current health care policies have contributed to oral health disparities in frail and functionally dependent elders who reside in nursing homes. Emerging empirical evidence suggests links between poor oral health with dental plaque deposition and systemic disease, such as nursing home-acquired pneumonia. The majority of nursing home residents lack either the functional ability or the mental capacity to perform their own mouth

A facilitated early return to work program at a large urban medical center.

An Early Return to Work Program was initiated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Associated Schools of Medicine, Hygiene and Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland, in April 1992 as part of a comprehensive effort to control the incidence and costs of work-related illnesses and injuries. The program was similar to others that incorporate employee and supervisory training and job accommodation, but it also included an industrial hygienist trained in ergonomics to facilitate the placement of individuals with restrictions. The return to work program was studied over a 10-year period, comparing the number o

After the merger. Quality assurance for combined services.

The Patient Support Services Supervisory/Lead Staff have adapted well to using the MQAI format. We had always used a Quality control of Inspection sheet internally to evaluated performance levels, correct problems and generate work orders. Interviewing patients directly on a random basis was first approached with some fear and reticence. However, the positive comments, especially about the friendliness of our staff, made the task more enjoyable. The input of the nurse or area manager has been more difficult to obtain because of busy work schedules. We receive mostly favorable marks about our s

Factors governing the performance of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives in India: A study in Pune district.

BACKGROUND: The Auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) cadre was created to focus on maternal and child health. ANMs are respected members of their communities and established providers of maternal and child health care within the community and at the facility level. Over time, additional roles and responsibilities have been added. Despite the importance of ANMs in the primary healthcare system in India, studies that consider factors governing the performance of ANMs in their workplaces are limited. We aimed to study factors governing performance of ANMs in Pune district, India. METHODS: Semi-structur

An empirical study of integration models and mechanisms for maternity care in innovative vocational education.

Integrated vocational education is increasingly essential for addressing maternal health disparities in under-resourced regions of China. Persistent workforce shortages and fragmented training models have contributed to inconsistent care delivery, particularly in Western provinces. This study evaluated an integrated model that combines simulation-based learning, structured supervision, and early clinical immersion to enhance training effectiveness. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design assessed the model's impact on patient satisfaction, student interaction, and perceived maternal complic

Prevalence, seriousness and reporting of work-related violence in the Danish elderly care.

A survey study (paper and pencil) among staff of elderly care institutions in 36 Danish municipalities (n = 9949) was conducted in 2005 with a response rate of 78%. The majority of the participants of the study were women (96%). The paper presents the prevalence, perpetrators, seriousness (self-rated seriousness, injuries, sick leave and type of violence) of work-related physical violence towards care workers in the Danish elderly care and the frequency of reporting the incidents to the safety organization. The findings show that every fourth caregiver was exposed to violence in 2005. Care per

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) in Christchurch: 18 years on.

AIM: Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has become an established option for management infections requiring intravenous therapy. As the uptake of OPAT has increased, the clinical governance has changed and is now managed via virtual clinics and increased use of district nurses in addition to specialist outpatient review. The aim of this study was to report the characteristics, diagnoses, treatment and outcomes of patients managed by the service over 12 months in 2015/6 and compared these features with those of patients treated with OPAT in 1999. METHODS: Cases for 2015/6 were

The perceived impact of birth trauma witnessed by maternity health professionals: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Maternity health professionals (MHPs) caring for women may witness or be involved in traumatic births. This can be associated with MHPs experiencing secondary traumatic stress (STS) or probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which may impact MHPs emotionally and physically. The aims of this review were therefore to determine: (i) the prevalence of STS and PTSD in maternity health professionals; and (ii) the impact of witnessing birth trauma on maternity health professionals. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review was carried out by conducting literature searches on CIN
