A survey of the ways master's level nursing students learn the research process.

Because of the need for advanced practice nurses to perform more outcome measurement, a survey was conducted in the fall of 1997 to determine how master's level students learned the research process. Three hundred four surveys were mailed to schools with master's programs, and 222 were returned for a return rate of 73%. Sixty-six percent of the programs surveyed required a thesis and/or a research project. However, there was great variation in the research projects. A comprehensive examination was used to measure research ability by 36 programs (16%), either in conjunction with a thesis or res

A Network Analysis of Research Topics and Trends in End-of-Life Care and Nursing.

This study identified the trends in end-of-life care and nursing through text network analysis. About 18,935 articles published until September 2019 were selected through searches on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. For topic modeling, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (K = 8) was applied. Most of the top ranked topic words for the degree and betweenness centralities were consistent with the top 1% through the semantic network diagram. Among the important keywords examined every five years, "care" was unrivaled. When analyzing th

[Nurses experiencing burn out in psychiatry: from research to the hospital setting].

A purely managerial approach to burn out amongst nursing staff within a hospital setting, for instance, through the use of psychometric scales to measure the phenomenon, may implicitly lead to a singular focus on the vulnerability of the personnel concerned. Far from being a purely natural phenomenon, burn out should not be perceived as such, but rather it should be viewed in terms of how it relates to the ambiguity between the various professional sub-cultures of the different partners involved in the domain of care provision. In fact, burn out is socially constructed. It is not interpreted i

Research Confidence of Critical Care Nurses: A Mixed Methods Preliminary Study.

Gaining competencies in the research process is difficult and labour-intensive, especially if the nurse has no prior experience in research engagement. The aim of this paper was to examine the research confidence of critical care nurses. This preliminary study utilised a mixed methods design. Critical care nurses working in the United Kingdom participated in the study. A survey questionnaire and focus group discussions (FGD) were used to collect data. Findings showed that nurses had moderate levels of confidence in research skills. Thematic analyses of FGD responses highlighted the organisatio

Research Nurse Roles and Functions in Clinical Trials for Assisted Reproductive Drugs.

Assisted reproductive drug clinical trials require close coordination between reproductive medicine, nursing, embryology, pharmacy, laboratory, data management, and regulatory teams. Their implementation is complicated by cycle-dependent treatment schedules, frequent endocrine and ultrasound monitoring, strict medication timing, reproductive specimen handling, pregnancy follow-up, and safety reporting. These features create specific demands for clinical research nurses (CRNs), whose responsibilities extend beyond routine nursing care. This review summarizes the roles and functions of CRNs in a

Towards translational research participation for nurses and midwives: a mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses' and midwives' participation in research has to date been highly variable and dependent on context and culture. A changing landscape that values and endorses research translation requires examination of who is participating in research and how, with an evaluation of current individual and organizational research capacity. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the existing research capacity amongst nurses and midwives in a large Local Health District in New South Wales, Australia to inform the development of a nuanced capacity building programme directed toward building

Caring Behaviours in Nursing: A Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Trends and Knowledge Structure.

BACKGROUND: Caring behaviours constitute one of the most visible ways in which "caring" is translated into everyday nursing practice, yet the field has become increasingly heterogeneous across settings, outcomes, and conceptual traditions. A field-level map is therefore needed to clarify how the literature has evolved and where it is currently concentrating. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to bibliometrically map the literature on caring behaviours in nursing, focusing on global research trends, thematic development, collaboration networks, citation performance, and the field's intellectual struc

Tracing the Roots of Inquiry: A Historical Review of Nursing Research Through Professionalisation Theory.

Nursing research has developed unevenly across history, shaped by shifting institutional structures, professional aspirations and societal demands. Yet existing historical reviews have largely adopted descriptive approaches, while few have applied an explicit theoretical lens to explain why this unevenness persists. This paper addresses that gap by examining the historical development of nursing research through Greenwood's trait-based professionalisation framework. Drawing on a narrative historical review spanning seven chronological periods, the analysis reveals a recurring pattern of partia

Nursing research on vascular access in hemodialysis: Trends and insights from a bibliometric study.

Vascular access is essential for effective hemodialysis, a life-sustaining treatment for patients with chronic kidney disease, and nurses play a critical role in its management through infection prevention, patient education, and promotion of self-care. Despite a growing body of research on vascular access, bibliometric analyses that specifically explore nursing contributions remain limited. This study aimed to analyze trends in nursing research on vascular access in hemodialysis through a bibliometric approach. A total of 837 articles published in 275 sources between 1986 and 2025 were retrie

Identifying Top Research Priorities in Perioperative Nursing: An eDelphi Study of AORN Guideline Gaps.

AORN published an extensive list of research priorities (2023-2028), spanning 34 guidelines and more than 400 subtopics, posing a challenge for focused research. To address this "choice overload" and guide future efforts, we followed Guidance on Conducting and Reporting Delphi Studies reporting guidelines and conducted an eDelphi study with a panel of perioperative nurse experts. Through five iterative rounds, including surveys and a concluding virtual focus group, panelists achieved consensus on the most essential research needs. The study successfully identified the top five AORN guideline r

Research progress on continuous nursing care for children after radical surgery for Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease is a common congenital gastrointestinal malformation in children, for which radical surgery remains the primary treatment modality. Postoperatively, patients are prone to complications such as Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis, defecation dysfunction, anal stenosis, and psychological or behavioral abnormalities, all of which significantly impair growth, development, and quality of life. As a critical bridge linking inpatient treatment with home-based rehabilitation, continuous nursing care has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing post-discharge outcomes, reducing compl

What are research nurses' experiences of obtaining consent from or for patients participating in emergency care research? A qualitative review.

INTRODUCTION: If studies are to be valid, recruitment of representative samples is essential. In 2012, 28% of UK emergency departments met the 80% standard for recruitment to trials set by the National Institute for Health Research. Research nurses play a vital role in the conduct of high-quality research, and it has been argued that dedicated research nurses are needed if clinical trials are to recruit successfully to target.
